Bamike ‘Bambam’ Olawunmi, the former BBNaija housemate, has recounted her struggles with childbirth and postpartum depression.

In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, the media personality, Bambam said she was diagnosed with preeclampsia during her first pregnancy.

The mother of two said pregnancy transformed her body, adding that she went from a dress size 8 to 16.

She praised Teddy A, her husband, for being supportive during the transition phases of her pregnancy.

The reality TV star said she ignored social media trolls who mocked her for gaining weight because “they cannot understand”.

“I would never have imagined that my body would get this thick. I look in front of the mirror and thank God for supportive husbands like mine,” she said.

“Imagine I had a man who was not open to the transition phases I went through with each pregnancy.

“My second pregnancy was even more merciful than the first. What! Zendaya! I went from Maroon to black, I had skin tags, I had acne breakouts and went from size 8 to 14/16.

“I was in shock. I went through postpartum depression. I was a mess. I did not understand. I transformed literally.

“But I mean look at the girl. Now you understand why she did what she had to do.

“I had to ask the doctor, ‘is that my baby?’ ‘How is she so white looking?’ She had grey eyes and now they are brown.

“She looked so different. I had preeclampsia with her pregnancy, she had detached from my placenta by the time I arrived at the hospital.

“So the thought of losing her, if I hadn’t been diligent with my antenatal classes or taking my vitamins. We tried going to have her abroad but there were a lot of setbacks so we had to settle.

“And the hospital we got, thank God they were so diligent. Imagine they didn’t do my urinalysis test and the doctor didn’t call at the time that he did?

“Her birth was a miracle, my pregnancy phase was a miracle. Postpartum depression was because I kept playing all the what ifs in my head.”

From January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised to $20,635 from the initial $10,000 so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Honourable Marc Miller, announced the review on Thursday. He said that moving forward, the new threshold will be adjusted each year when Statistics Canada updates the low-income cut-off (LICO).

LICO represents the minimum income necessary to ensure that an individual does not have to spend a greater than average portion of income on necessities.

According to the information posted on the website of the Canadian Government, the cost-of-living requirement for study permit applicants has not changed since the early 2000s, when it was set at $10,000 for a single applicant. As such, the financial requirement hasn’t kept up with the cost of living over time, resulting in students arriving in Canada only to learn that their funds aren’t adequate, a development that can put them in a financial crisis.

Consequently, for 2024, a single applicant will need to show they have $20,635, representing 75% of LICO, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. The change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.

While this will help prevent student vulnerability and exploitation, Minister Miller said: “We recognize that the impact of the change could vary depending on the applicant. Next year, in collaboration with partners, we intend to implement targeted pilots that will test new ideas aimed at helping underrepresented cohorts of international students pursue their studies in Canada.

“Today’s announcement follows important reforms to the International Student Program announced on October 27, 2023, regarding the development of a new framework to recognise learning institutions that provide top-quality services and support, including housing, to international students. We expect learning institutions to only accept the number of students that they can provide adequate support for, including housing options.

“In welcoming international students, we have a responsibility to make sure that students are supported when they come to our country. Ahead of the September 2024 semester, we are prepared to take necessary measures, including limiting visas, to ensure that designated learning institutions provide adequate and sufficient student support as part of the academic experience. In order to achieve this result, it is imperative to work together with provincial and territorial governments, learning institutions and other education stakeholders, so we can ensure international students are set up for success in Canada.”

LEADERSHIP reports that Canada is a top destination for international students, owing to her high-quality educational institutions; her welcoming, diverse society; and the opportunities for some to work or immigrate permanently after graduation. While international students have contributed to life on campuses and innovation across the country, they have also experienced some serious challenges, such as finding adequate housing, as they pursue their studies in the North American country.

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Ogun Command, have arrested a 35-year-old musician, Odewala Iseoluwa Akinleye, for defiling the 16-year-old daughter of his lover.

The suspect was paraded at the command’s headquarters in Abeokuta on Thursday, December 7, 2023.

Spokesman of the command, Dyke Ogbonnaya, said the suspect was arrested following a report at the Anti-Human Trafficking Irregular Migration and Gender Unit of the command.

“On Monday, the 4th of December 2023, the Anti- Human Trafficking Irregular Migration and Gender Unit received a matter which was transferred from the Ofada/Mokoliki division of the command, involving one Odewale Iseoluwa Akinleye, male, 35 years (suspect) and a victim (female) of 16 years of age, name withheld,” he said.

“We got to know about the matter through the family members of the victim and our men went after the suspect, got hold of him and brought him to our division. Going through the matter deeply, they saw that it was something they couldn’t handle on their own so it was brought to the state’s headquarters. And on investigation, he confessed to the crime and would be charged to court,”

Ogbonnaya cautioned parents, particularly mothers, to exercise caution when interacting with men when their female children are within the environment because this could have a negative impact on the kids

Speaking to newsmen, the suspect who is a musician and drummer, said he had been in a relationship with the victim’s mother before she travelled to Israel in 2017.

“We had sex together. I started sleeping with her around 2017, I knew her through her mother who was my band leader. I play talking drum for her and we love each other and we were sleeping together (mother) and she had a son for me before she travelled to Israel," he said.

"When her mom was traveling, she handed her over to my elder sister and her two brothers and we gave her a separate room and I had the opportunity to go inside her room. That was when the relationship started.

"When we were at Oke Aregba, I didn’t sleep with her until we moved elsewhere that was when she confessed to me this year August she has a boyfriend and he has been sleeping with her. So, for me not to tell her mom, she asked what she can do; and I told her that whenever she needs sex she should come to me.

"I can’t remember her age when I started sleeping with her. She’s going to 17 years old by December 14 this year. Her mom travelled in November 2017 and left her with us.

“I didn’t penetrate her then in 2017, we were just cuddling ourselves. It was just a family relationship.”

The suspect admitted giving the victim lime after having intercourse with her in order to prevent pregnancy.

The National Youth Service Corps announced on Thursday that two more of the abducted female prospective corps members have been released, bringing the total number freed so far to four out of the eight taken hostage along with their bus driver in August.

The two women were abducted by gunmen in Zamfara while travelling from Akwa Ibom to the orientation camp in Sokoto.

According to a statement on Thursday, efforts by the Nigerian Army recently secured the release of a male and a female abductee.

The NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Yush’au Ahmed, noted that negotiations are ongoing for the safe return of the remaining captives.

“The scheme, in conjunction with security agencies, will explore every available strategy to ensure their release unhurt and reunite them with their families,” the Director of Press, Eddy Megwa stated.

The NYSC expressed appreciation for the support from the Nigerian Army so far in working towards freeing the prospective corps members as they remain resolute in their responsibility of promoting national unity and integration.

“NYSC management also wishes to appreciate the overwhelming support received from the Nigerian Army in its concerted efforts towards securing the release of the abducted prospective corps members,” Megwa added.

He reiterated the scheme’s determination to remain resolute in its statutory responsibility of fostering national unity and integration.

Mobile Money Operators (MM0s) and Financial Technology firms have reacted to the new directives from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) for banks to remove Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs), Switches and Super Agents from its outward transfer list.

NIBSS in a circular with reference number, NIBSS/BD/NUP0/005/051723, directed banks to disconnect PSSPs, Switching Companies (Switches) and Super Agents from NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) Outwards System.

NIBSS said non-deposit financial institution using the NIP were doing so in contravention of the Central Bank of Nigeria guideline.

The development led to panic from customers who deposited their monies in MMO like Piggyvest and Opay.

“Kindly note that PiggyVest is not affected by the recent NIBSS circular. Please disregard the misinformation.

“All PiggyVest virtual account numbers are provided by our licensed partners and do not fall into any of the listed categories. Your funds remain safe,” PiggyVest said while responding to panic.

“The focus is on Payment Service Solution Providers, Switches and Super Agents.

“OPay is a Mobile Money Operator (MMO) licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC. Your funds are safe and secure with OPay.”

Kuda Bank said it is not affected by the recent circular from NIBSS.

“The circular mentions ‘Switches, Payment Service Solution Providers and Super Agents.’ We’re a licensed microfinance bank, so we don’t belong to any of the groups mentioned. Your money remains safe with us.”

Similarly, Cowrywise said, “The changes do not affect Cowrywise in any way, and your funds are safe and accessible as always.”

Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho finally broke silence on the reports that he transformed into a cat during a midnight raid conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS) on his residence in July 2021.

Igboho, in an interview with Punch, debunked the report, saying nothing like that happened during the DSS raid.

He said the DSS indiscriminately fired bullets during the raid, leading to the deaths of several cats.

The activist said the DSS mission was to either kill or arrest him and take him to an unknown destination.

He said, “It is true that some cats were killed during the attack? Because the DSS just kept firing bullets in all directions. I was rearing cats as pets, and I had many of them in my house. So, anything or movement attracted sporadic gunshots.

“Their mission was to either kill me or arrest me and take me to an unknown destination, but the Almighty God is greater than anybody in this world, including the despotic ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

“My God and providence put Buhari to shame with the lawless invasion of my home because they all failed to achieve what they came for. I didn’t turn into a cat to escape.”

Meanwhile, Igboho said he is unaware if the DSS brought three herbalists during the raid because the bullet fired for several hours at his residence caused fear and commotion.

He said, “I wouldn’t know that because the DSS stormed my residence at midnight, causing fear and commotion in the whole of the Soka area of Ibadan and releasing a volley of bullets for several hours.

“In that atmosphere of confusion and violence, how do you expect me to be checking if they came with herbalists or pastors? There couldn’t have been time for that.”

When asked to clarify the report of stockpiling guns in his house, Igboho said, “That’s very far from the truth. How can I stockpile guns in my house?

“All those allegations are phantoms and cooked up by the DSS just to implicate me in a planned or trumped-up criminal trial.”

The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Wahab Hammed, a ward Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Surulere Local Government Area of the state, to a one-year jail term or in the alternative a fine of N1m.

Justice Ismail Ijelu sentenced the defendant after convicting him on a two-count charge of conspiracy and bribery.

At his arraignment on Wednesday, the EFCC Prosecutor, Samuel Daji, told the court that on February 25, 2023, the defendant conspired with one Segun Ijitola (who is still at large), to corruptly pay bribe to voters during the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

Daji said that the defendant committed the offence at Unit 28, Gbaja Girls Junior High School, in Surulere.

The offences contravene the provision of Sections 121 (1) and (5); 121 (1) and 1 (3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The defendant pleaded guilty and the court subsequently adjourned till Thursday, Dec. 7th to enable the prosecution counsel to review the facts of the case preparatory to conviction and sentencing.

At the proceedings on Thursday, the EFCC counsel, Daji, tendered in court the statement of the review of the prosecution’s facts against the defendant.

Daji also told the court that, “The EFCC officers while on election monitoring duties during the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Election held on the 25th February 2023, received an intelligence report that certain individuals were involved in vote buying and bribery at Polling Unit 28 located at Gbaja Girls High School, Surulere, Lagos.

“After the receipt of the intelligence, the operatives of EFCC who were on election monitoring duties were dispatched to the venue.

“On sighting the operatives, the voters involved in vote buying took to their heels but the defendant was arrested with the sum of N121,000 in N500 denominations.

“He was brought to the EFCC’s Ikoyi office with the exhibit. When he was interviewed, he stated that he is a ward leader of APC in Unit F3 in Surulere, Lagos and he confessed that the money was given to him by one Hon. Segun Ijitola who is a Senior Special Assistant to Chairman Surulere Local Government.

“He admitted that he had shared part of the money to those who ran away and it was to bribe the voters to vote for his party, APC.

“He also admitted that he had spent part of the money. He made voluntary statements of at least 2 pages where he admitted these facts. He also admitted that he is ready to forfeit the sum found with him to the Federal Government being proceeds of criminal activities”.

The court admitted the defendant’s statements as evidence and also admitted as exhibit, the money recovered from him.

The Prosecutor also urged the court to accept the facts as presented, convict the defendant accordingly and order the forfeiture of the exhibit to the Federal Government for being proceeds of crime.

The defendant on his part admitted that he understood the facts as presented by the prosecutor through an interpreter and he reiterated his guilty plea.

Having satisfied himself that the defendant clearly understood the facts as reviewed against him and intended to admit same, Justice Ijelu found him guilty and convicted him accordingly.

The defendant pleaded for mercy. He told the court, “I have never been arrested. If not for the situation of the country, I would not be in this situation. I’m over 70 years old. I’m not fit, I have high blood pressure, ulcer and urinary incontinence and if not for this case, I was to undergo surgery last Saturday. I have not been well since my arrest, and I plead with the court to forgive me.

“I wouldn’t be here in this situation if my children were doing well and working. I have six children who are well-educated and their mom is no more, she is late.”

The defendant’s counsel, Mr. Olaniyi Ademola, in his speech also asked the court to note that his client voluntarily decided to plead guilty. He also noted that the client was a first-time offender who had never been convicted before.

In his sentence, Justice Ijelu reminded the defendant’s counsel that he owes a duty to society to speak words of truth to his clients. He reminded all parties that everyone must be partners in nation-building.

He said, “The defendant has further put himself deeply in the mess that contributed to his children not having jobs by taking to crime. Is that the solution?

“The court has listened to the allocutus of the convict, that he is a first offender and has no criminal record. He also appears to be remorseful.

“S 121 (1) (c) of the Electoral Act 2022 under which the convict was charged states that “any person who advances or pays or causes to be paid any money to any person with the intent that such money shall be expended in bribery at any election, commits an offence and is liable on conviction of a maximum fine of N500,000 or imprisonment for a term of 12 months or both.

“This section gives the court a discretionary power to exercise. The court finds high culpability on the part of the convict, the harm occasioned by his conduct is significant. The court found no aggravating factor against him.

“In mitigating the sentence, the court considers that he made a guilty plea and has no previous convictions and he is a first offender.

“There’s no doubt that the need to sanitize our electoral process cannot be over-emphasized. Having pleaded guilty, the court takes the view that imposing a non-custodial sentence on this convict may deter him from future misconduct.

“For this reason, Alhaji Wahab Olaniyi Hammed is sentenced to a term of imprisonment for one year or an option of 500,000 on each of the two counts against him. He shall forfeit the proceeds of the crime to the FG.

“He shall also undertake to the EFCC in writing to always be of good behaviour and to never indulge in crime again.”

"Who can live and never did?

       How can we humans keep

       ourselves from the grave?   Psalms89:48

The eventual exit of Comrade Frank Kokori though may be as ordained by God yet he probably could have tarried for a while more if he got the required Government care, support and welfare when he most needed them.
Comrade Kokori was a rare ideological specimen in trade unionism and the democratic struggle that Nigeria has passed through in the last 40 years and counting.

He was a rare nationalist, committed ideologue, genuine patriot, who risked even his own carrier and family comfort as well as possible prospect to speak truth to power on behalf of the down trodden Nigerians.

Comrade Kokori was well educated and well trained in the management of human resources to balance up with capital for productive growth of the state economy.

Comrade Kokori’s sagacity and courageous leadership came to national limelight much more in 1993-1994 through to 1998 .As the General Secretary of the National Union of Petroleum Employee and Natural Gas Union, NUPENG which was registered in 1978, Frank played a pivotal role in making the organisation to become a most critical trade union in the democratic struggle of Nigerians to restore democracy to Nigeria.

Comrade Kokori was enticed severally with tantalizing offers from Generals Babangida and Abacha but he rejected all allurements.

When the NLC under Comrade Paschal Bafyau became unwilling to pressure the military junta to deannul the victory of Basorun MKO Abiola in 1994, Comrade Kokori and his NUPENG President Comrade W. Kodjo Agamene mobilised their Union along with NUBIFE and other democratic bodies to organize the most prolonged national strike in post-independence Nigeria.

Comrade Kokori and I as the General Secretary of NADECO met many times at odd times to fine-tune their strategy and commencement of the strike.

When he was arrested through the conspiracy of an insider in Yaba, he was taken eventually to Bama prison for Four years without any charge against him.

The strike continued but could not be sustained after a month because the Abacha junta had frozen the NUPENG accounts thereby making it impossible to pay their Union staff. NADECO volunteers were able to source for fund to pay a month staff salary. Eventually Comrade Agamene himself was captured. He, Baba Omojola and I were transported in a presidential jet on a particular morning of October 1994.We were later dispersed in Abuja to different prisons, they to Katsina and I to Central Prisons in Kano.

Comrade Kokori suffered the painful loss of his wife later on and the Nigerian State did not deem it fit to recognize the selfless and patriotic commitment of the comrade to our democratic struggle.

The most painful part of the national neglect of those who lost their sweet, blood, possessions, liberties and even lives in order to birth the 4th Republic is their wanton abandonment to their fates while the fair weather elements who remain surrogates, loyalists, sympathizers, acolytes and supporters of the military agenda to stay in power are the beneficiaries of the gains of the activists.

The fact that Comrade Kokori could not get the best treatment by the Nigerian State thereby hasting his eventual demise is shameful and condemnable. Even when the past Buhari’s administration tried to make him the Chairman of NSTIF, he was frustrated and denied. WHAT A COUNTRY? I pray that the good Lord will console his family in Kokori in Warri LGA and may the Lord soothe their pains with the balm from Gilead. And may the soul of Comrade Kokori rest in the bossom of the Lord.

Point-of-sale operators in Nigeria have raised the alarm that some state governments have started charging them at least N30,000 in taxes annually per agent.

The National Vice President of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria, Obioha Oti, disclosed this in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.

Oti was speaking on the emerging threat of the naira shortage and its effect on PoS operators.

According to him, PoS vendors are plagued by naira shortages and heavy taxes in some parts of the country.

He alleged that state governments in Anambra, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, as well as other states in the southwest and north, tax PoS operators N100 daily and N2500 monthly.

“There are many other problems POS operators are facing now. This disturbing trend is why some state governments have started taxing operators heavily. We have reports in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Anambra states, states in the southwest and others in the north. For Anambra, there is an agency the government commissions to collect N100 daily, N2500 monthly, and N1000 to register. If you do the calculation, one agent will pay at least N30,000 to the government in the form of taxes. And sometimes the people collecting these taxes are more than one,” he said.
