Subsidy Removal: Federation Account Raked In N1 Trillion In Four Months – FG Reveals
The removal of subsidies increased revenue inflow into the Federation Account from an average of N650 billion per month to over N1 trillion over the last four months, according to Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edun.
Making this disclosure at a four-day retreat held in Asaba, Delta state capital, Edun said that the economic reforms that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration had undertaken since its inception clearly outlined the right steps towards the transformation of the country’s economy.
Mr Edun’s statement was read by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Okokon Udo.
“The economic reforms which this administration has undertaken since its inception in May, 2023 clearly outlined right steps to transformation of the country’s economy.In less than six months of the administration, we have witnessed the introduction of important reforms, such as petroleum subsidy removal, fiscal and monetary policies reforms aimed at removing multiple taxation among others,” he said.
“The Federation Account in particular is witnessing improved revenue inflow since the removal of subsidy from an average of N650 billion monthly to over N1 trillion in the last four months.The government had for long realised that petroleum subsidy is not sustainable given it erodes revenues that should have been available to fund viable expenditures that are critical to wellbeing of the populace,” he added.
He claimed that two of Tinubu’s administration’s main goals are to reach the 22 percent tax revenue to GDP target and the 18 percent tax to GDP target by 2026.
Naija News recalls that President Tinubu had on assumption of office immediately removed fuel subsidy and floated the country’s currency.

South Africa To Host BRICS Summit On Israel-Hamas War
South Africa will Tuesday host a virtual summit of the BRICS group of nations, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Israel-Hamas war, Pretoria and Moscow said Monday.
The BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — are a group of major emerging economies seeking to reshape the US and Western-led global order.
Tuesday’s “Extraordinary Joint Meeting on the Middle East Situation in Gaza” will be hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the hope of drawing up a common response to the more than six-week conflict.
Leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates — who are all due to join the BRICS group in January 2024 — will attend the meeting.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also participate, the South African presidency said in a statement.
It added that all five BRICS heads of state will join the virtual summit, after which a joint statement with particular reference to Gaza is expected.
Fighting is raging in Gaza after a shock Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, with around 240 people taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.
In Gaza, around 13,300 people, more than 5,500 of them children, have been killed in the retaliatory air and ground offensive, officials in the Hamas-run territory have said.
South Africa has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party often linking it to its own struggle against apartheid.
The ANC said last Thursday that it would support a parliamentary motion to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel until it agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, decrying the “genocidal actions of the Israeli regime”.
On Friday, South Africa joined four other nations in calling for an International Criminal Court investigation into the Israel-Hamas war.
China has historically been sympathetic to the Palestinians and supportive of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Beijing has been calling for an immediate ceasefire since the start of the war last month.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of stoking tensions in the Middle East, and criticised Israel for its conduct in the conflict.
Putin skipped the last BRICS annual summit in Johannesburg as he is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant — a provision that South Africa as an ICC member would be expected to implement if he were to set foot in the country

Microsoft To Hire Sam Altman Days After Ouster As ChatGPT Parent Firm’s CEO
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday announced the hiring of OpenAI’s Sam Altman and other members of his team, days after the co-founder of the venture behind ChatGPT was fired.
“The mission continues,” Altman, who rose to fame with the launch of the artificial intelligence chatbot last year, posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Nadella wrote on X that Altman “will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team,” along with OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and their colleagues.
OpenAI’s board sacked Altman on Friday, prompting other high-profile departures from the company as well as a reported push by major investors to bring him back.
‘Despite Pressure’
The board stood by its decision in a memo sent to employees on Sunday night, saying it was “the only path to advance and defend the mission of OpenAI,” The New York Times reported.
The board of ChatGPT creator OpenAI on Sunday rejected pressure from Microsoft and other major investors to reverse its stunning decision to fire CEO Sam Altman, US media reported.
OpenAI and Altman rocketed to fame with the launch of ChatGPT last year, showcasing advances in generative artificial intelligence that set off a gold rush in the sector.
But the company’s board shocked the industry on Friday by removing co-founder Altman, prompting other high-profile departures as well as a reported push by major investors to bring the 38-year-old back.
The board stood by its decision in a memo sent to employees on Sunday night, saying it was “the only path to advance and defend the mission of OpenAI,” The New York Times reported.
“Put simply, Sam’s behavior and lack of transparency in his interactions with the board undermined the board’s ability to effectively supervise the company in the manner it was mandated to do,” the board said in the memo, according to the Times.
The OpenAI board also appointed Emmett Shear, a former chief executive of Amazon’s Twitch streaming service, as the interim CEO, it added.
When the OpenAI board announced Altman’s exit last week, it said chief technology officer Mira Murati would become the interim CEO.
The developments on Sunday were also reported by Bloomberg and tech industry news site The Information.
The board had grown increasingly concerned that Altman was underestimating the dangers of its tech and leading the company away from its stated mission, US media reported.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that high-profile OpenAI investors including global tech titan Microsoft and venture firm Thrive Capital were trying to restore Altman as CEO.
Microsoft has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI and has rolled out the AI pioneer’s tech in its own products.
Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT are trained on vast amounts of data to enable them to answer questions, even complex ones, in human-like language.
They are also used to generate and manipulate imagery.
The ballooning of investment in AI R&D by companies around the world has led to warnings about the dangers of its misuse — from blackmailing people with “deepfake” images to the manipulation of images and harmful disinformation.
US media reported that the announcement from OpenAI’s board on Sunday was signed by its directors, including co-founder and respected AI expert Ilya Sutskever.
Sutskever had reportedly aired his concerns with OpenAI’s business directions as well as the threats posed by the technology.
He has told OpenAI staff that Altman would not return, according to Bloomberg

Gov Mbah To Equip 40,000 Youths With Digital, Entrepreneurial Skills Annually
The Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has assured that his administration would continue to train at least 40,000 youths across the state on relevant digital and entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to compete in the global digital and entrepreneurial markets.
The governor gave this assurance while delivering a keynote address at the Enugu Tech and Entrepreneurship with the theme, “Innovation Unleashed: Transforming Enugu’s Future”.
“We want them to embrace the emerging future of robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and disruptive innovation through skills in information and technology,” he said on Sunday.
“Our administration would train at least 40,000 youths across the state on relevant digital and entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to compete in the global digital and entrepreneurial markets.”
According to him, his administration had already commenced the training of youths on digital innovation, programming, digital marketing, financial technology, and entrepreneurship, among other requisite technological, financial, and business skills.
Mbah is optimistic that with the right training and skills, which his government is determined to facilitate by partnering with different tech industries and stakeholders, the youths could create their own greener pastures in Nigeria without having to travel overseas.
“With the right training and skills which my government would facilitate by partnering with different reputable tech industries, our youths can create their own greener pasture in Nigeria without having to travel abroad. And with their own innovation here, they can create greener pastures on the Enugu soil,” the governor said.

Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys Predicted To Top $10m At Auction
A set of six jerseys that Lionel Messi wore during Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup run will be auctioned in December, Sotheby’s announced Monday, estimating their value at more than $10 million.
The football star donned these shirts during the first halves of the group-stage rounds against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as later games against Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia — and the final against France.
Argentina’s winning run in Qatar last year was the final feather in the forward’s cap, having failed to secure the championship in four previous World Cups.
If the jerseys indeed fetch above $10 million, that could make the sale the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever auctioned off, Sotheby’s said.
The most expensive individual jersey ever sold at auction was one that basketball legend Michael Jordan wore during his NBA finals run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.
It sold for $10.1 million last year.
Auction houses have increasingly taken note of sports memorabilia in recent years, considered a growing market.
The shirts are being brought to auction by US tech startup AC Momento, which helps athletes manage memorabilia collections.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, an initiative with a Barcelona children’s hospital that helps kids with rare diseases.
The jerseys will be available for free public viewing when they are up for auction, from November 30 to December 14.

Benjamin Mendy To Sue Man City For Unpaid Wages
Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy is set to sue the Premier League champions after claiming he is owed millions of pounds in unpaid wages.
Mendy will take City to an employment tribunal in a bid to recoup what the French left-back believes were “unauthorised deductions from wages” after he was charged with rape and sexual assault two years ago.
The 29-year-old was cleared of the rape and attempted rape charges and left City when his contract expired in June.
It is alleged City stopped paying Mendy in September 2021 after he was initially charged and held in custody.
“Nick De Marco KC… is acting for the former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million-pound claim for unauthorised deductions from wages,” a statement on behalf of Mendy told Sky Sports and The Guardian.
“Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr Mendy being charged with various offences all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023. The claim will come before an employment tribunal.”
In January, Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, but the jury were unable to reach verdicts on two charges, leading to a retrial.
He was found not guilty on those two charges by a jury at the retrial in July.
Mendy, who was reportedly paid around £100,000 ($125,000) per week by City, is seeking the return of pay he is owed up until the end of his contract with the treble winners.
A three-time Premier League champion with City, Mendy last played for Pep Guardiola’s team in 2021 and joined French club Lorient at the start of this season.

During the initial stages of project conceptualization, the contractor was tasked with executing the project under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework entailing the Build, Operate, Maintain, and Transfer model. ‘We Do Not Need Near-Obsolete Equipment’ – Tinubu To Investors At G20 Conference
President Bola Tinubu has rejected the dumping of obsolete equipment in Africa.
He insisted that Nigeria and other African countries desire genuine investments to foster their development and prosperity.
The President stated this at the G20 conference in Berlin, Germany.
He reaffirmed Africa’s readiness to engage in mutually beneficial business partnerships with Europe and the rest of the world.
Naija News reports that the investors’ conference is being held under the G20’s Compact with Africa initiative.
Responding to a question on whether Africa was actively encouraging trade among its nations, President Tinubu affirmed, “I’d say yes because the promotional efforts of the Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who visited Africa recently, is equally an indication that Europe is serious about doing business with Africa.”
The President highlighted the strides made in governance and stability, particularly in Nigeria, saying the nation has continued to fine-tune its business environment and the rule of law to attract serious investors.
Addressing concerns about the importation of near-obsolete equipment to Africa, President Tinubu stated, “Yes, on Siemens, I agree that near-obsolete equipment is not the answer to what we need in Africa. The President, who left Nigeria some minutes past 7pm on Saturday, was received on arrival by a delegation made up of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, the Nigerian Head of Mission in Berlin, Amb. Regina Ocheni, and other dignitaries.
The G20 CWA conference will be taking place alongside the fourth G20 investment summit, co-hosted by the German Government and German business associations.
President Tinubu will be joining other heads of state and government of CWA member countries, bilateral partners, as well as heads of international organisations to deliberate on the immediate enhancement of economic and business cooperation with a view to outlining concrete measures to boost investments in critical areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, and new technologies, among others.

Niger State Assembly To Pass Law Allowing Six-Month Maternity Leave
The Niger State House of Assembly is set to enact a law that will provide six months maternity leave for nursing mothers in the state.
The Deputy Speaker, Afiniki Dauda, stated this on Sunday during a training session on etiquette, protocol, security, and empowerment for female political office holders in Minna, the state capital.
She said the bill was important to allow women to get the required rest after childbirth and to enhance the health of the nursing mother and her child.
The all-women event organised by the wife of the governor of Niger State, Fatima Bago, was aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance and equipping them with the required business and life skills for them to fit into their new roles as political officeholders and wives of elected and appointed political officials.
The training was a follow-up to an earlier one organised by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in Abuja.
Dauda, in her remarks, said the six-month maternity leave would enable working-class nursing mothers to fully regain their energy and bond sufficiently with their children during the period.
Also speaking, Mrs Bago asked the women to leave a modest lifestyle devoid of extravagant character.
Resource persons at the event dwelt on several issues around gender-based violence, etiquette, security, and general conduct of women that would protect their integrity and safety as well as those of their spouses.
