NPFL play-offs: Enyimba thrash Sunshine to go top, Remo stay in hunt

ENYIMBA rose to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League championship play-offs standings tonight after a 3-0 win over Sunshine Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

The People’s Elephant have garnered eight points from their four games and overtook Rivers United, who temporarily took top place after ending Bendel Insurance’s unbeaten run in the afternoon.

Rivers United also have eight points but Enyimba have a superior goal difference, two goals ahead of the defending champions.

Chijioke Mbaoma struck twice early in the first half and Ikenna Cooper added another goal midway into the second half to give eight-time champions Enyimba the biggest win of the play-offs.

In the second fixture of matchday 4 after Rivers United’s win over Bendel Insurance, Remo Stars stayed in the hunt for their first-ever NPFL title with a 2-0 victory over Lobi Stars.

Former league top scorer Junior Lokosa and Olamilekan Adams netted in the first half to keep Remo Stars in third place, two points behind Enyimba and Rivers United ahead of the final round of matches on Sunday.

Sunshine Stars and Lobi, who have two points each and are both out of contention for the title or continental tickets, open proceedings on Sunday at 2pm.

Remo Stars face Insurance in the second match of the final day from 4.30pm, with the former needing a win to retain hopes of the title and the latter having to secure victory to earn a CAF Confederation Cup ticket.

The night kick-off from 7pm is fittingly the winner-takes-all title showdown between Enyimba and Rivers United.

A win for either side will guarantee the title regardless of how Remo Stars fare against Bendel Insurance, while a draw will be enough for Enyimba provided Remo Stars do not beat Bendel Insurance by two goals or more.
