Chelsea increase their salary offer to sign Manuel Ugarte ahead of Paris Saint-Germain

Chelsea have upped the ante in their bid to sign Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte this summer.

The Blues have made the Uruguay international a top midfield target with Mauricio Pochettino giving the move the green light in one of his first major decisions since being unveiled as the new manager at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have already signalled their intent to activate the 22-year-old’s release clause and according to Record, have now increased their salary offer to €3.5million (£3.1m) per year, in addition to a number of performance-based incentives and bonuses.

It is a substantial increase on Chelsea’s previous offer of €2million, but one that still falls short of the €5m package offered by Paris Saint-Germain who are also keen to sign the midfielder as part of their rebuild.

Pochettino is also said to have spoken to the player directly to help push through the deal.

PSG are believed to have offered Sporting more favourable terms regarding the transfer fee, however.

Chelsea have offered to pay Ugarte’s €60m (£51.5m) clause in multiple instalments but PSG are willing to split the cost across two payments of €30m (£25.7m).

It’s understood that Chelsea also attempted to include striker David Datro Fofana as part of the deal for Ugarte but that offer has been rejected by Sporting.

Chelsea meanwhile are also eager to sign Brighton star Moises Caicedo with the Ecuador international expected to leave the AMEX Stadium this summer for around £80m.

The Blues will hope to raise additional transfer funds through a number of player sales in the coming weeks and months with Mason Mount likely to fetch the biggest fee.

Manchester United are the front runners to sign the England international having agreed personal terms over a move to take him to Old Trafford.

United are still to agree a fee with Chelsea however with the London club reportedly demanding as much as £75million for the 24-year-old.
