The original title of this musing is How do you stop manufacturing poverty in Nigeria, I got the kicker from conversations with HRM Sanusi in his take on relationships with China and our leadership Humpty Dumpty with a crazy idle population. I, however, will not exactly tow that line, and this is not about China but also about China.

So, I will tell us a true story in a Chinese manner of a man who wants to be boss, but cannot be, he trains, struggles, and tries to do everything but all to no avail. He lives the illusion that someday everything will be okay, be alright; in local parlance one day either Maga pays, or he will get into power, or someone whom he knows who knows someone, his kinsman or faithsman, churchguy, or mosquedude will get into power.

Until then, in today’s Nigeria he must like Emeka Keem Jamal content himself training, and learning Kung Fu skills to do the following with only just two kids (only two) and that’s almost impossible, we are fertile and hardly have just two kids.

In this schedule, let me add quickly that there are no fast and quick rules, for example, there are no rules about three square meals, I am not sure with my arithmetic knowledge how three is even a square. I can tell though that none of the above cuts it as a meal, at best they are food (make something dey belly).

And speaking of three square or circle meals, kids will eat as long as there is food so leave the matter, my dear reading friend.

If you consider spending N93250 Monthly with the exclusion of FISH Or MEAT to feed his Family of just two kids, you will then ask who foots the bills for:

5. School Fees

I have kept these necessities at an intentional number, leaving out relatives, relaxation, societal obligations et al. This man tries to beat the boss, he tries every day to take revenge but society only knows to manufacture poverty.

This is the complex and multifaceted challenge that keeps our nation bound, it requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders, including government, civil society, businesses, and individuals.

Until we are serious in defining what for example qualifies for Quality Education, prioritize investments in education to improve literacy rates and provide young people with the skills and knowledge they need to secure better employment opportunities, or drive the economy themselves, we will continue to have loads of Emeka Keem Jamal who struggle from womb to tomb.

It is not the government’s job to create Jobs, but it’s a primary responsibility to through economic diversification encourage entrepreneurship and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across various sectors. This can be achieved through access to capital, training, and market linkages. Sadly our current policies simply facilitate mass creation of poverty as the same SMEs are killed daily.

In our agricultural spaces, we have continued to mouth transformation, but the truth is that even if we invest in modernizing agriculture by providing farmers with access to improved seeds, technology, irrigation, and market opportunities which in turn can significantly boost rural incomes, bandits and kidnappers have vowed we will not eat and threatens our food security.

The infrastructural development we see in China is simply mind-blowing, next to none, I see Chinese railways in China and see Chinese railways in Nigeria, and one is forced to ask—who do us? Government after government, access to basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water, and sanitation only looks like the magically Ibadan-based magician of yesteryears Professor Peller. Without these basics, we shorten quality of life, and we are unable to also create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Our Social Safety Nets are scams, when we are not feeding school children who are at home during COVID-19, we are inventing magic numbers for conditional funds transfer, rather than implementing effective social safety net programs that target the most vulnerable populations, providing them with cash transfers, food subsidies, healthcare, and other essential services, we are removing almost every form of subsidy available to them.

As I get to the last part of my take on this contentious issue of the Nigerian state, I choose to end with cautious optimism, so here lies a leeway if we care; poverty kills, therefore let us start with health, we can strengthen our healthcare system to ensure that all citizens have access to quality and affordable healthcare services. This includes improving primary healthcare facilities and addressing healthcare disparities between urban and rural areas. A healthy citizenry is a healthy nation.

When we discuss governance, there is often the propensity in the nigeriasphere to see only Abuja as the beginning and end of it all, so we leave rural development, if we must stem the ravaging poverty, there should be a focus on the development of rural areas by investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agricultural productivity. This can help stem rural-to-urban migration and create economic opportunities in rural communities.

Our Financial Inclusion does not promote access to financial services, including banking, microfinance, and insurance, to empower individuals and businesses with the tools they need to manage and grow their finances. We must empower our women, and support initiatives that promote gender equality, including access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Empowered women are more likely to invest in their families’ well-being.

A nation that declares holidays at will is not driven by data, to move out of the dangerous slide, we must invest in data collection, analysis, and monitoring systems to track progress and inform evidence-based policy decisions. Not the current groping in the dark!

It’s important to note that these strategies should be implemented in a coordinated and holistic manner, taking into account the unique challenges and opportunities present in different regions of Nigeria. Additionally, active participation and engagement from citizens at all levels of society are crucial for sustainable poverty reduction. We must kill poverty, we must be intentional about it, Nigeria deserves more, we are capable but do we want to is an important question—May Nigeria win

The Trade Union Congress on Saturday said the suspension of its October 1 nationwide strike was a temporary move. It noted that it remained conditional upon the fulfillment of the promise by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to fulfill the conditions enlisted in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government and the Organised Labour.

Labour also dismissed the claim by governors that they would not implement the demands in the MoU between the Federal Government and the organised labour on the grounds that governors had rolled out palliatives for state civil servants and residents before the MoU was signed.

The National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, made these known in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday.

Sunday PUNCH reports that the organised Labour and the Federal Government had signed a 15-point agreement in the MoU, which was made public on October 1, 2023.

Speaking on reports that governors might not implement the terms of the agreement, Etim stated, “That is not possible. Anyways, the truth is that we have reached out to our people in the states to meet with them. Letters have also been sent to that effect.”

On the progress reached so far with the government, the labour leader said, “The 30-day ultimatum we gave to them is still in place. We have given them time and we are sure they are working. What we did was just a suspension. When you suspend a strike, you can kickstart it without further notice. We have done our part and we are waiting for them to play their part.”

Logan Paul has defeated MMA fighter Dillon Danis by disqualification after their six-round heavyweight grudge match ended in a mass brawl at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday night.

The final round escalated into chaos when Danis attempted to take Paul down with a guillotine move and Paul tried to punch his opponent while on the ground.

Initially, the incident brought one security guard into the ring, but he was promptly followed by more than 30 others with Danis starting to throw punches at them, and even Jake Paul getting involved, while Logan stood on the ropes celebrating.

‘El Jefe’ Danis has been relentlessly trolling Paul’s fiancee Nina Agdal on social media ever since the fight was announced and it eventually spilled over in the final round in a chaotic and controversial ending.

Paul, wearing pink shorts, boxed on the outside and at range, while Danis took the centre of the ring in a cagey opening round.

Paul won his Misfits heavyweight fight against Danis at the AO Arena after it descended into chaos.

Paul, 28, then opened up late in the next, unloading with a series of crushing body shots which Danis managed to soak up.

Danis threw a couple of backhand shots before lying flat on the canvas taunting his rival. It had Paul and the crowd frustrated and agitated at what resembled a pantomime, rather than a pay-per-view fight.

Danis had never competed in a boxing match before, with his experience instead coming in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts, although he has not fought in MMA in four years, and he only has two professional bouts to his name.

The 30-year-old was set to fight KSI months ago but withdrew, but he got his crack at Logan Paul, whose only pro fight defeat came against KSI.

Paul, who has over 23 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, won easy fourth and fifth rounds with his opponent just looking to avoid the knockout, while Danis was deducted a point in the final round for trying to wrestle Paul to the ground before the brawl broke out.

The official result of the fight is a win for Logan Paul by disqualification.

The crisis between the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt Rev Godfrey Onah and his priest, Rev Fr Paul Obayi, famously known as Fr Okunerere, continues to attract diverse reactions.

Obayi is the spiritual director of the Okunerere Adoration Ministry, Nsukka, Enugu State.

DAILY POST reported that Fr Obayi, who runs a similar prayer ministry like Mbaka, revealed that the church authority in the diocese was oppressing him.

He had alleged that he gave everything to the church, yet the church wanted to strangle him.

“The church is my vineyard, I love the church, I love my Nsukka (Catholic) church, I love the bishop, I love the priests, I love them, but they are oppressing me.

“I give everything to the church, yet the church wants to strangle me. But it can’t happen!

“Since the church doesn’t want me again, I am leaving the Catholic Church any moment from now,” he said.

He alleged that some priests, who claimed to be acting on the order of the Bishop, broke the entrance gate to the Adoration Ministry.

His outcry has remained subject of controversy on social media, with people taking various positions.

Mbaka, who is known for not keeping quiet, has then spoken out, warning those oppressing Obayi to desist or face the consequences of their actions, which he termed ‘sin against the Holy Spirit’.

The fiery cleric, who said his fellow priests always abandoned him whenever he faced similar oppression, noted that he would always stand out.

He demanded that Obayi should be shielded from what he described as ”attacks and forces of darkness, whims and caprices of hawks, vultures and serpents”.

In a veiled attack on the Bishop, Mbaka said, ”When you have not verified what a man of God is doing, you begin to blackmail and misinterpret it.

“Has anyone given you people an assignment? Know when you have crossed the boundary. Are you God? Why are you an impostor?’

”If you people shut down Okunerere adoration ministry, the demons he cast will follow you people. I want the world to hear this voice. These are the children given to me; I am their senior brother.”

According to the cleric, ”We need more soul-winners like Father Okunerere. You beat a child and asked him not to cry. Who are you? God ordained all that you are. And if you take the authority God gave you to oppress his messenger, heaven will take away what it has bestowed on you. You better repent”.

Mbaka lamented that many other priests were in anguish and bleeding over the treatment meted out on them by church leaders.

He said many left the seminary burning for God, but the fire was always regrettably extinguished once they were ordained priests.

He declared: ”I am talking to Nsukka people. I am not talking to any individual. Nsukka, as a people, if you keep quiet and Father Obayi is nowhere to be found, before such a good thing like him comes to you people, those who will die because of it would be many. I know that what I have spoken will raise so much dust.

”Father Obayi may not be the best, but he’s good. He has done so well in winning souls to God. He should not be messed up. Those who should shield this young man from attacks and forces of darkness should not pass him to the whims and caprices of hawks, vultures and serpents.

”Father Obayi should not be exposed to predators. The chief shepherd of that diocese should protect that young man. Obayi should not be compensated with sorrow and should not be handed over a dead child.

”But I will warn my brother priest not to be tempted into leaving the priesthood. Let him be courageous, let him be steadfast, let him be resolute. His labours will never be in vain.

”I have been trying to get him through the phone, but I have not. I saw the thing on social media, so I am replying through social media. Jesus in the Eucharist is the one you should look to. He will keep you, Father. He will shield you from the valleys of shadows of death. He will preserve you.

“Don’t forget you have dealt tortuously with many demons, so they cannot leave you unharassed. The devil can use many people to attack you back.

”Those who are doing these things to Obayi should know he is not supposed to cry for you people. The good thing that came to Nsukka. The people of Nsukka, you kept quiet? Are you people saying it does not concern you? There is someone you lose, and heaven’s wrath and anger will be upon you when you can no longer find him.

“Do you people even know what’s happening to you people? Nsukka people, be vigilant!

”Galatians 6:17 says, ‘’Henceforth, let no one trouble me. I bear in my body the wounds of Jesus’. Don’t trouble Fr Obayi anymore; allow him to concentrate, focus, dedicate himself to the work of God, and be used as a deliverer, as a healer. Allow him to sacrifice himself – he has been sacrificing.

”I know Father Paul so deeply. If there is a place where he is falling short, let him be corrected. But he has done well in many areas. And the people of God love him. Let nobody be jealous of him. You cannot do what he’s doing.

”If such a man could leave the occult world and come into Christianity, and he would be bullied in his Christian family, where would he now run to? The Bible says the foundation, once destroyed, what shall the just man do? (Psalm 11:3). Because the sceptre of the wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the just. Otherwise, the just will be forced to put a hand in evil.

”Those who brought poverty and hardships in the land, nobody has done anything to them. Nobody has done anything to the wicked ones in the society. Meanwhile, the messenger of God has been made to cry in the house of God for nothing.

”It is easy to attack me, and I will endure, but you cannot attack a fellow prophet, and I will be silent. Listen, whoever is doing this thing to Obayi, he should not cry for you people again.

”You know, during my trying time, many priests kept silent. It is not so now. I am speaking under the mandate of the Holy Spirit. Stop bullying men of God.

”Why do you people hate those who can pray? Why do you hate those who are anointed in a charismatic way? Where do you belong? Nsukka, are you people silent? Let nothing happen to Father Paul. Every town would not be dumb. The Catholic Church is not a dumb church.

“He should be encouraged. He needs our prayers and support. He needs our love. He is a real man of God. Where he did not do well, he should be corrected but should not be caused to be bleeding in the church.

”The Catholic Church is passing through a tsunami. We are losing our members in millions to Pentecostals and gifted priests who will become magnets to pull the snatched-away members back, taken away by idol worshippers; many have gone into cultism and occultism, and we are losing our members; many have no leadership trust in the leadership of the church anymore, I am talking about the reality; instead of planning on soul-winning and proper evangelization.

”If you people shut down Okunerere adoration ministry, the demons he cast will follow you people. I want the world to hear this voice.

”What is the problem? You are free to misunderstand me when you hear this, but heaven will dismay you if you exceed your boundaries. I don’t want to know who you are. Evil is nothing but evil. You people should stop killing the church. We need soul-winners like Father Okunerere, more of that.

”Not just Father Okunerere, there are other priests who are in anguish and lamentation. A Rev. father does not marry and has no child. So, we need prayers for our priests.

”In the future, the Catholic Church in Nigeria will begin to look for people like those that they are killing now, but it will be difficult to get them.

“Beware, Jesus said that every sin could be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Spirit.

“When you have not verified what a man of God is doing, you begin to blackmail it and misinterpret it. Has anyone given you people an assignment? Know when you have crossed the boundary. Are you God? Why are you an impostor?

”Let me stop here because I know these things I have said will raise many other issues. You can come out if you have the strength. In many dioceses, many priests are bleeding. They came out from the oven of the seminary hot with anointing, ready to pray and work and be holy, and they would be messed up.”

Recall that Mbaka has had several running battles with his Enugu Catholic Bishop, Most Rev Callistus Onaga, over his ministry’s activities.

The last was in June 2022 when the Adoration Ministry was shut down on the order of the Bishop.

The Bishop, in a letter he personally signed, and addressed to ‘All the Clery, Religious and Lay Faithful in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu’, banned all the members from having anything to do with the Adoration Ministry.

The letter said, “In the light of the happenings in the Catholic Adoration Ministry Chaplaincy Enugu, capable of undermining the Catholic faith and teachings and after several fraternal corrections and admonitions to Fr. Ejike Mbaka, the Chaplain of the Ministry.”

“Having given him pastoral directives and guidelines for the Ministry Chaplaincy, which he persistently violated.

“In fulfilment of my pastoral duties as the Chief Shepherd with the obligation to promote and safeguard the Catholic faith and morals in Enugu Diocese, I hereby prohibit all Catholics (clergy, religious and lay faithful) henceforth from attending all religious and liturgical activities of the Catholic Adoration Ministry until the due canonical process initiated by the Diocese is concluded.

“My decision is based on the fact that some of the teachings and utterances of Fr. Mbaka at the Catholic Adoration Ministry are not consistent with the teachings and faith of the Catholic Church,” Onaga said.

This was in reaction to the issues involving Mbaka and the then presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.

Recall that the priest had during one of the adoration programmes declared that Obi, who he described as “a stingy man”, would not win the election.

About four months after the ministry was shut down, it was announced that Mbaka had been sent to the monastery.

It was further disclosed that the new Chaplain of the Adoration Ministry Chaplaincy is Rev Fr Anthony Amadi.

Mbaka’s followers, however, kicked against the decision and Fr Amadi was prevented from assuming duty by adorers as Mbaka’s followers are fondly called.

In January this year, Mbaka was allowed to resume his ministry’s activities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they killed another man in Gaza suspected of masterminding the large-scale attacks by Islamist Hamas.

Billal Al Kedra, commander of Hamas units in southern Khan Younis, was killed in airstrikes the previous evening, according to an IDF statement on Sunday morning.

Other Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were also killed, the IDF said.

The latest news came after the IDF said it had killed two other men they suspect of masterminding the Hamas attacks.

The IDF attacked more than 100 Hamas military targets in Zeitoun, Khan Younis and western Jabalia, it said, hitting operational command centers, military facilities, dozens of launching pads for anti-tank missiles and observation posts.

Command centres of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organisation were also hit, the IDF said.

Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the United States and Israel.

The Met confirmed that as of 5:30 pm, seven people at the demonstration had been arrested for a number of alleged offences including one person on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

The UK government has been steadfast in its support of Israel, with ministers calling on police to use the “full force of the law” against shows of support for Hamas or bids to intimidate the UK’s Jewish community.

Amid concerns about the scale of the Israeli response, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Friday that the country has “every right to defend itself” from Hamas attacks but stressed that civilian safety must be “paramount in our minds.”

But 12 aid agencies, including Oxfam, Action Against Hunger, and Action Aid, called on Sunak and Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to use the UK’s influence to help bring an end to the violence.

The leadership of the Christ Apostolic Church in Nigeria (CAC) has called on its members across the federation to desist from travelling in  branded vehicles.

The call was made by the church’s General Secretary, Pastor E. Mapur through a circular to all CAC regional district supervisors and pastors on Friday.

The circular further directed each church assembly to engage the services of armed mobile police officers if they wished to travel in their branded vehicles.

It read, “The rate at which kidnapping incidents of church members, especially in branded vehicles/buses of the church, has become a source of concern to the church authority. The most recent is the incident of the Christ Apostolic Church Oke-Igan choir, whose members were abducted in Ondo State.

“I am directed to mandate every assembly in Christ Apostolic Church that henceforth any Assembly/District/Zone/DCC that wishes to travel in their branded buses/vehicles must ensure that the services of armed mobile police officers are engaged.

“The church cannot afford to see its members experiencing such a traumatic situation again. We urge all ministers in CAC to take this instruction with every seriousness. May the Lord continually protect all members of the church and indeed Nigerians.”

This directive came after about 25 choristers of the church were kidnapped by gunmen on September 29 at Ifon, at Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.

There is a Chinua Achebe International Airport in Anambra State.

It was a spectacular masterstroke from Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo when he renamed the Anambra Airport at Umueri after Chinua Achebe.

The ovation that Soludo got when he made the announcement in his speech at the 63rd Nigerian Independence Anniversary which took place at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on October 1 was thunderous and long-lasting.

There is no doubt whatsoever that naming the airport after Chinua Achebe will spike up tourism to the state from across the globe.

When Bard College in New York built the Achebe House in the university, for instance, the place instantly turned into a tourist attraction.

In the ennobling words of Governor Soludo, “Chinua Achebe is an African and global hero, Anambra’s greatest gift to the literary world.”

Achebe’s uncommon integrity makes him the archetypal depiction of the title of his fourth novel, “A Man of the People”, in total contradistinction with the politician hero of the novel, Chief MA Nanga.

Chinua Achebe seized the human race by the jugular when he published his first novel Things Fall Apart in 1958.

The novel has never ever gone out of print since its first publication, and has been translated into more than 60 languages.

Things Fall Apart reportedly accounted for more than 80 percent of the sales of Heinemann’s African Writers Series (AWS) which Achebe served as an unpaid Editorial Adviser.

It’s remarkable that Governor Soludo who named the airport after the legendary writer was a young student in 1981 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka when Achebe founded the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on the grounds of the esteemed institution.

Achebe happened not to be the typical reclusive writer because his activities in the wider society during his lifetime were equally redoubtable.

He was political in his lifetime in the truest sense of the dictum from Aristotle as per “man is by nature a political animal.”

Achebe was the Vice-Chairman of Aminu Kano’s Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in the Second Republic.

He never at any time sat on the fence over national issues, for instance, unapologetically pitching his tent with Biafra when his people faced flagitious pogrom and genocide.

Achebe was a man of many anchors, adeptly combining the roles of critic, activist, organizer, publisher, politician, and served as the President-General (PG) of his native town union in Ogidi, Anambra State.

When he rejected the award of the high national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in October, 2004, from then President Olusegun Obasanjo, Achebe wrote: “I write this letter with a very heavy heart. For some time now, I have watched events in Nigeria with alarm and dismay. I have watched particularly the chaos in my own state of Anambra where a small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connection in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency.”

True to his unwavering principle, Achebe also rejected the award when it was re-offered by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.

Achebe’s word would have resounded if he were to be alive today, seeing the dire circumstances of the country.

A man who always spoke truth to power, Achebe wrote in his 1983 book The Trouble with Nigeria: “The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There is nothing basically wrong with the Nigerian character. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land or climate or water or air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example which are the hallmarks of true leadership.”

According to Achebe, “Nigeria is what it is because its leaders are not what they should be.”

Chinua Achebe left behind an everlasting body of work: Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God, A Man of the People, Anthills of the Savannah, Girls at War and Other Stories, Beware Soul Brother, Morning Yet on Creation Day, The Trouble with Nigeria, Chike and the River, Home and Exile, Hopes and Impediments, The Education of a British-Protected Child, There Was A Country etc.

It was one death that shook the world when Chinua Achebe died at exactly 11:51pm (US time), that is 4.51am (Nigerian time), on Thursday, March 21 at the Harvard University Teaching Hospital, Massachusetts, USA, aged 82.

Tributes poured in from all over the world such as the iconic Kenyan novelist, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, who wrote: “Achebe bestrides generations and geographies. Every country in Africa claims him as their own.”

Achebe’s legacy was lauded by the then US President Barrack Obama thus: “A revolutionary author, educator, and cultural ambassador, Chinua shattered the conventions of literature and shaped the collective identity of Nigerians throughout the world. With a dream of taking on misperceptions of his homeland, he gave voice to perspectives that cultivated understanding and drew our world closer together.
