First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says Nigerians cannot wait for government to do everything.
She said this yesterday while hosting the National Executive of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) in her office at the State House, Abuja.
“We cannot wait for government to do everything. We must lend a helping hand to everyone around us,” she said.
She urged all women to ensure youths are guided to follow the path of good values and morals.
She underscored the need for all women to pursue a way to take the youth out of the clutches of the negative aspects of the social media.
In her remarks, Lau said the NCWS would partner with the first lady on her Renewed Hope Initiative pet project.
Meanwhile, former First Lady Patience Jonathan yesterday visited Mrs Tinubu and promised her support to achieve the goals of assisting the needy in the society.
She said it was imperative for her as a former first lady to also support and encourage Mrs Tinubu on things that would move the nation forward.
“You’re one of the women that I looked forward to, because you can make Nigerian women proud, I’m here to encourage and support you because we’re one country and our country must move forward.
“Twenty four hours, I’m with you, call me anytime, any day, I’ll work with you for the country to move forward and to be better because it’s our country, we have no other place to go.”
Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC), has stated that Nigeria is devoid of solutions to the country’s problems but deficient in putting them into action.
The eminent monarch stated that Nigeria’s problem is not a lack of ideas or solutions to its problems, but rather the implementation of the identified solutions.

According to the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Job Racketeering, there are allegations that officials of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) were collecting 10% from agencies for recruitment.
There were also allegations that IPPIS officials go to agencies to ask for money before capturing people recruited by agencies, according to the Committee’s chairman, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi.
Gagdi made these remarks during the Committee’s resumed hearing on Wednesday, when the Director-General, Directorate for Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA), Rabiu Dagari, who appeared before the lawmakers, stated that staff hired since 2019 have not been captured in the system.
He said;
IPPIS, we have allegations against you that you are collecting 10 per cent from agencies for recruitment. Have you taken note of the fact that they wrote to you concerning the recruitment they did?
They have a balance of resources as a result of retirement and other reasons. These monies are always ‘absconded’ and not returned to the treasury. They wrote two letters to IPPIS to capture the people that they followed due process in recruiting and you refused.
There are allegations that you go to agencies to ask for money before you capture the people you want to capture. Yet, the ones that are legitimately employed will not be captured. If an agency wrote to IPPIS to capture people that were recruited, it means that the employment is legitimate.
Dagari informed the Committee that he had written two separate letters to the Accountant General of the Federation requesting that affected personnel be recorded in the IPPIS.
The DTCA Director General also stated that agencies use waivers to avoid due process, which he believes is contrary to merit and competence.
I never heard of waivers during our time.” Perhaps people were not as desperate in our time as they are now. I know that if there had been something like a waiver during our time, some of us would not be in the position we are in today.
I am from a remote area of Yobe State. I took my exams without anyone’s help because I didn’t know anyone.
If we had this type of situation then, some of us will not be holding the position we are holding today and maybe I will not be sitting here talking to you. I do not support waiver because so much cutting corners are done when it comes to waiver.
We are having so many problems in this country because we refuse to do the right thing and waiver is an opportunity for people to cut corners. Something has to be done about it.
For the umpteenth time, the committee’s chairman warned agencies against hiding behind waivers for recruitment without following the proper process of advertising vacancies, as this was in violation of existing laws.
He stated that most qualified Nigerian graduates, particularly those with no one, have been denied jobs due to waivers because MDAs typically carry out indoor employment without advertising to allow such Nigerians to apply for the job.
This came as the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation, NAIC, which also testified before the panel, stated that it had obtained waivers from the Federal Character Commission to employ a few staff whom it could pay at the end of the month as a self-funded agency.
The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) informed the Committee that its last recruitment was in 2010, and that it has since been understaffed due to the inability to conduct another recruitment due to insufficient funding.
The commission’s chairman, Victor Murako, requested assistance from the legislature, stating that the agency is currently in a bind due to its inability to carry out its mandate.
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have revealed that the oil rig that capsized on Tuesday at Ovhor in Warri, Delta State, had been illegally operating in Nigerian waters since 2016.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday by the agency’s Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, he stated that the Majestic Rig, owned by Depthwize Nigeria Limited, had been operating without the necessary regulatory approvals since 2016.
According to him, NIMASA has sent a team to the scene of the incident comprised of Search and Rescue and marine accident investigation officers.
In line with the mandate of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, which includes safe shipping and cleaner oceans, a team comprising of Search and Rescue and marine accident investigation officers have been dispatched to the scene of the incident involving the Majestic Rig belonging to Depthwize Nigeria Limited, which capsized at Ovhor in Warri, Delta State.
Initial findings has confirmed that the ill-fated Rig is Panama Flagged and has been operating on Nigerian waters since 2016 without requisite approvals from the Agency.

Lateef Fagbemi: Tinubu Names APC Lead Counsel At Tribunal As Attorney-General, Minister Of Justice

Fagbemi was among the ministerial nominees screened by the Senate.
At the Presidential Tribunal, he asked the five-man panel of the court chaired by Justice Haruna Tsammani to declare that Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour party, failed to prove Tinubu’s election was rigged in their separate petitions filed at the tribunal.
He maintained that “no one presented any alternative figure” to dispute the results announced by the INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood.
Fagbemi (64) hails from Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, North Central.
He graduated with a law degree from the University of Jos, Plateau State in 1984 and was called to the bar in 1985.
He obtained his master’s degree in Law (LLM) in 1987 from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria at age 37 while running his private firm.
As one of the legal luminaries, Fagbemi has appeared in court for several high profile cases.
One of such cases was the election of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
Leading Amaechi’s legal team in 2007, he was able to convince the Supreme Court that his client was the valid winner of the state’s gubernatorial polls at the time.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has triggered the reorganization of Jaiz Bank’s management team as the non-interest bank pushes to boost profitability.

The bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sirajo Salisu also tendered his resignation letter which was accepted by the Board on August 14, 2023, the bank disclosed in a regulatory filing obtained by THE WHISTLER.
The affected directors are Unar Abdul Mutallab board chairman, Falalu Bello who first resigned when the apex bank issued the first circular.
Ibrahim Mamun Maude and Bello Muhammad Sani also resigned following a second circular issued by the apex bank.

US court gives Tinubu deadline to state reasons why his university credentials shouldn’t be released to Atiku
AdminPresident Bola Tinubu has until August 23 to present persuasive arguments as to why Chicago State University should not be ordered to release his academic records to Atiku Abubakar, his rival in the February 25 Nigerian presidential election, according to court filings seen by Peoples Gazette.
This deadline was imposed on August 9 by Jeffrey Gilbert, the new magistrate judge assigned to the case at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.
Abubakar, earlier this month, requested court approval to subpoena Tinubu’s files domiciled with CSU because he believed the documents would clarify glaring inconsistencies in Tinubu’s background, including publicly-available documents that suggested the CSU in the 1970s admitted a female student bearing Bola Tinubu who was born on March 29, 1954.
The Nigerian president said he was born on March 29, 1952, although he had also, at different times, listed 1954 as his birth year in the past. He also recently expunged his primary and secondary education from his records after it was discovered that the schools he listed under oath in his 1999 run for Lagos governor did not exist anywhere in Nigeria. Abubakar believed the requested records would show which early and high school papers Tinubu submitted to CSU before he was admitted to study accounting there.
Shortly after Abubakar approached the court for the records, Tinubu filed a motion to thwart the request from being granted, citing a U.S. privacy law for students.
But the court appeared interested in allowing the case to proceed after Abubakar argued it has a valid jurisdiction. The judge has now set a deadline mandating Tinubu to submit his argument by August 23 as to why CSU must keep his records from Abubakar, filings showed.
Additionally, the U.S. court ordered Abubakar to respond to Tinubu’s argument by September 9 —- two weeks after Tinubu’s response was anticipated. The timeline showed the court was racing to rule on the matter before September 21, when Nigeria’s election petitions tribunal would likely deliver its judgement in the suit challenging Tinubu’s election victory.
Tinubu’s questionable academic history is merely one of several grounds that Abubakar’s lawyers are pursuing in Nigerian courts to nullify his declaration as president and eligibility to stand for election in future. Claims ranging from narcotics dealing to money laundering and election fraud are also being argued.
Tinubu, who was sworn in as Nigerian president on May 29, has insisted he was the one who attended CSU; while dismissing his 1990s narcotics scandal as a civil forfeiture proceeding that should not carry any criminal implications for his political ambition.
The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the sum of N44.7 billion in the proposed supplementary budget.
The state Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Babangida Umar Gantsa, revealed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting.
He said the supplementary budget is to finance some critical infrastructure and social services in the 3rd and 4th quarters of this year.
He explained that the need to complete some projects and the increase in federal allocation as a result of fuel subsidy removal made it necessary for the state government to make a supplementary budget.
According to the commissioner, some of the sectors to be financed from the supplementary budget include the Ministry of Works and Transport (N13.8 billion), Ministry of Health (N2 billion), Ministry of Education (N3 billion), Ministry of Finance (N2.4 billion) and Jigawa Road Maintenance Agency (N2 billion).
Gantsa added that the supplementary budget will be sent to the Jigawa State House of Assembly for legislative work and approval.
On his part, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Sagiru Musa, revealed that the council has also approved over N192 million for the extension of drainages in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, has sealed off the Arrow of God Community Children’s Home in Onitsha over allegations of illegal adoption and selling of children.
Obinabo led security operatives to seal off the structure on Wednesday, after a report and documentary by Fisayo Soyombo made the rounds on social media and local television stations, alleging that the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare was involved in an illegal adoption of a baby girl alongside one of her registered homes in the state.
About 20 children were recovered from the orphanage operator, including a newborn baby while the founder and the employees had fled and are currently at large.
The children recovered were between the ages of one to 17 years; ten boys, nine girls, and a newborn baby.
While denying any involvement of herself and the ministry in the illegal child adoption saga, Obinabo said the founder of the orphanage home, Rev D.C Ogo, was invited to her office in Awka for an explanation, but she did not honour the invitation.
She said, “The ministry is not aware of any adoption with the Arrow of God Orphanage home even and the adoption process never went through the ministry.
“There are irregularities in the said adoption which include the absence of three signatories such as the Commissioner, the Head of child and that of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
“Since I assumed office, all application for court order of adoption or care goes through the designated Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka as against the Nnewi court order presented in the documentary, this is so because the fundamental goal is to preserve the best interest of the child.”
She warned other children’s home operators involved in illegal adoption to desist forthwith or face the consequences, stating that the state government is all out to clamp down on operators who don’t follow the stipulated standardised operational practices and processes in the state.
She advised parents who intend to adopt a child in the state to be more careful as unsuspecting persons now parade themselves as ministry’s consultants who help in facilitating adoption.
“The general public should note that the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare did not engage the services of any consultant.
“We urge everyone to always report any suspicious activity found in any orphanage homes to the ministry even as we assured of making sure that the operator of the said orphanage home is brought to book in no distant time.
“The children recovered are currently in the care of the state government as necessary steps are underway to trace and reunite them with their different families,” she added.

The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has expressed optimism that the former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, will soon defect with the ruling party after his inauguration as a minister.
Ganduje stated this on Wednesday in response to inquiries from journalists regarding a widely circulated photograph capturing the visit of Nyesom Wike to his residence in Abuja.
Ganduje clarified that he has not engaged in discussions with Wike, who is a minister-designate, about the prospect of him joining the party.
Despite this, the APC National Chairman did not dismiss the possibility of such a collaboration taking shape in the foreseeable future.
“You know Wike is an Honourable Minister-designate, so he came, we discussed it because I was looking for him to congratulate him for that, and also he came to congratulate me and we discussed that when he becomes minister fully he will work very hard in order to move the ministry he is given forward and he is ready to cooperate.
“But we didn’t discuss the issue of his coming to APC or not coming to APC. That issue will arise later,” said Ganduje, who expressed hopes that the coming of Wike, when it eventually happens, will boost the party’s profile.
Apart from Wike’s potential entrance into the APC, Ganduje revealed that there is an ongoing effort, currently in progress behind the scenes, to forge a merger agreement with several other political parties to boost APC’s supporters in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general election.
“It will certainly improve the chances of this our party, especially in 2027 and not only that we are coming out with a new blueprint to increase the followership of the party and this we include all strata of officials; those who are in APC and those who are in other political parties.
“I assure you very soon some of the political parties will even merge with the APC. We are doing that underground”
On whether Wike’s ministerial appointment was not based on the spirit of government of national unity somehow canvassed by the APC, Ganduje said,
“But the spirit of national unity does not mean the spirit of one party in Nigeria. Spirit of national unity means spirit of national competence and spirit of national capacity.”
Earlier, Simon Lalong, former Plateau State governor, had expressed his approval of Senator Ganduje’s appointment as the APC National Chairman. He highlighted that, given Senator Ganduje’s status as the longest-serving political figure within the ruling party, he brings a wealth of experience and a composed temperament that can guide the party towards achieving its goals.
He said, “As the National Chairman, Ganduje was Governor. As a matter of fact when we look at his antecedents we always say he is the longest experienced politician that we have within us. Because he is somebody who was very long in Civil Service, he became Permanent Secretary, Commissioner, longest serving Deputy Governor and became Governor.
“So with this kind of experience, what else do you need in party matters? So we have confidence in him as he is now here and it is not an issue of one man, anytime he has an opportunity he does a lot of consultation and we are always available.
“His colleagues who were Governors with him are always available for this kind of work. That is why we are rallying around to give him every help so that the party can also succeed,” he added.
Like his predecessor, former President Buhari, President Bola Tinubu unveiled the portfolios of his appointed ministers. Tinubu has chosen to retain the Ministry of Petroleum for himself, a decision that has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions among political analysts and observers.
The ministry has been split in half, and now there are two ministers of state, both of whom are from the South-South.
Yusuf Tuggar is the foreign minister, and Dele Alake is the new Minister of Solid Minerals. Mohammed Idris will work in the Ministry of Information, and Festus Keyamo will be in charge of the growth of aviation and space.
Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, will be in charge of the FCT Ministry. Dave Umahi, the former governor of Ebonyi State, will be in charge of the Works Ministry. Kaduna state will be given the Ministry of the Environment.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advocated for a single term of five or six years for politicians.
Makinde said politicians should emulate the single term leadership of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).
He was reacting to PFN’s National President, Bishop Wale Oke’s remark that the body’s leadership does not allow for a second tenure.
Oke disclosed this while speaking at the opening ceremony of PFN’s National Executive Retreat in Ibadan.
However, speaking at the event, Makinde said politicians should learn from PFN, stressing that four years might not be enough to achieve one’s aims.
According to Makinde: “I am hearing for the first time that there is no second term in the PFN. Maybe, we need to learn one or two things from that arrangement for our nation.
“I am a supporter of a single term structure. As a matter of fact, I did not want any second term and I told the fathers of faith that four years is not enough to do everything that you want to do bit it is long enough to make your own impact and go your own way.
“If we get the opportunity to discuss this, I think five or six years single term, maybe five years, will really be enough for most of us to do whatever it is that we are supposed to do.”
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has secured a $3 billion to stabilise the naira.
The Nigerian currency crashed to all-time low last week, reaching N950 at the parallel market.
But on Wednesday, the oil firm signed a commitment letter and term sheet with the Afrexim Bank for an emergency $3bn crude oil repayment loan.
According to a statement from the corporation, the deal was sealed at the bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
“The NNPC Ltd. and AfriEXIM bank have jointly signed a commitment letter and Term sheet for an emergency $3 billion crude oil repayment loan.”
“The signing, which took place today at the bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, will provide some immediate disbursement that will enable the NNPC Ltd. to support the Federal Government in its ongoing fiscal and monetary policy reforms aimed at stabilizing the exchange rate market.”
