Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State and his deputy, Olayide Adelami, have been sworn in for a fresh four year term.
The Chief Justice of the state, Olusegun Odusola administered the oath to Aiyedatiwa and Adelami amid the presence of the people of the state and dignitaries who witnessed the event.
While taking the oath of office, the number one and number two citizens vowed to uphold the constitution, work within its dictates, and ensure the well-being of the people of the state.
The inauguration marks the takeoff of a new administration in Ondo State.
Present at the oath-taking event were the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Ekiti, Abiodun Oyebanji, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Youth Development, Ayo Olawande, among others.
All officers recruited before the Pension Fund Administrators (PFA) establishment on June 30, 2004, including inspectors and rank-and-file staff, have been directed by the Nigerian Police authorities to submit their information.
Naija News understands that the impacted officers must submit their details to the administrative office of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command Headquarters in Abuja by Monday, February 24, 2025, per an urgent police wireless communication that SaharaReporters exclusively obtained on Sunday.
They are required to give the following details: serial number, name, gender, date of retirement, pension pin, PFA name, wage structure as of June 30, 2004, and their grade level and step as of 2004.
The memo reads, “Pension scheme X as matter of urgency X all officers X Inspectors X rank and file X enlisted before the PFA come in to existence on 30 June 2004 X down ward X to submit their details to admin office urgently X on or before Monday being 24/02/2025 unfailingly for onward to pension office FCT Police Command Headquarters Abuja X under the following heading X S/No X Name X Gender X Date of Retirement X Pension Pin X PFA Name X salary structure as at 30 June 2004 X grade level and step as at 2004 X You’re further warned to make sure that all information provided are correct or you have yourself to be blame X above for your strict compliance.”
Naija News recalls that in early February, President Bola Tinubu acknowledged that Nigerian police officers’ existing salaries are inadequate given the nation’s economic circumstances and promised to rectify the inadequacy of the pension system for them.
At a recent interactive session with retired police officers and Nigeria Police Pensions stakeholders at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun made this news.
According to the police head, President Tinubu has received a fresh proposal to improve the force’s pension scheme.
According to Egbetokun, Tinubu concurred at a recent meeting that the nation’s retired police officers should receive higher compensation.
The IGP added that in order to improve the welfare of its employees, the force has asked the government for an annual intervention sum.
Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore reaffirmed his opposition to oppression on January 30 by participating in the ‘Egbetokun Must Go’ demonstration at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
This came after his release on ₦10 million bond, which included surrendering his passport and one surety of the same sum. They said he called Egbetokun the ‘illegal IGP’.
Speaking to the audience, Sowore declared that threats would not silence him.
In support of the resentful police officers, Sowore clarified that their well-being must come first.
“If it means organising a nationwide protest for their rights, we are ready. We are not doing this to patronise the police, but as employees of the Federal Government, they deserve housing, quality education for their children, and salaries that reflect their crucial role. A banker they protect earns more than them, yet without the police, banks cannot even open,” he said on the court premises.

The Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta, has cautioned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje against any attempts to allow the current Chairman of the APC in Kano to continue in office for a fourth term.
The Minister was quoted to have warned that any attempt to gives the current Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas another chance, would lead to serious crises in the party.
The Minister issued the threats at a caucus meeting in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano, on Saturday.
The Minister said, “we will not take it lightly with anybody trying to return Abdullahi Abbas to office after the expiration of his tenure, because it violates the constitution of the party”.
“We would not accept the Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas to be imposed on us for the fourth term, this will surely result in us decamping immediately from the party”, he threatened.
“We are saying loud and clear, I swear if Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance all of us will decamp from the party and APC will crash and lose 2027, this is my message to anybody who cares to listen”.
Yusuf Atta alleged that the arrogant and misguided disposition of Abdullahi Abbas as state Chairman is among the many negative tendencies that crippled and made the party to lost power in 2023.
“And up till today, the same person has not changed, therefore we are strongly warning that in any case and anyhow Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance everyone should consider the Party losing 2027.
” We were given good training by our parents and we know who God is, we never dare him but this man doesnt know that, therefore with him as Chairman APC is a foregone party in Kano.”
Atta said in 2023, APC won the governorship contest with Gawuna and Sule Garo as candidate and deputy but that Anti God remarks of Abdullahi Abbas truncated their victory.
There are reports that the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje is planning on reimposing Abdullahi Abbas to continue as the state chairman of the party for the fourth term.

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on Sunday presented Certificates of Return to elected chairmen across the state, following the controversial local government election held on Saturday.
Despite warnings from the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) against conducting the polls, OSIEC proceeded with the exercise.
In a video announcement on Saturday night, OSIEC Chairman declared that all seats were won by candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Confirming the development in a statement, OSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, said the commission officially presented Certificates of Return to the newly elected chairmen.
She said: “The OSSIEC Chairman congratulated the elected chairmen on their victory, just as he urged them to be good ambassadors of democracy both in conduct and service to the people.”
The swearing ceremony will be conducted for the newly elected executives at the Osun State Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo.

US President Donald Trump signed a memo Friday calling for curbs on Chinese investments in strategic sectors like tech and critical infrastructure -- including restrictions by a foreign investment review panel.
The move comes at a time of growing trade tensions and strategic competition between the world's two biggest economies.
It is aimed at promoting foreign investment, while protecting US national security interests "particularly from threats posed by foreign adversaries" like China, the White House said.
In particular, the memo took aim at China for "increasingly exploiting United States capital to develop and modernize its military, intelligence, and other security apparatuses."
It called for the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to be used to restrict Chinese investments in key US sectors such as technology, critical infrastructure, health care and energy.
CFIUS is a panel that weighs the national security implications of foreign investments in the United States.
"President Trump is keeping his promise to prevent foreign adversaries from taking advantage of the United States," the White House said.
Friday's memo came after Trump imposed additional customs duties of 10 percent on all products imported from China at the start of this month, over the country's alleged role in the deadly fentanyl trade.
Beijing has pushed back against the accusation.
But on Wednesday, the US president suggested that a trade deal with China was "possible."

Despite the seemingly limited options available, opposition politicians appear determined not to give up.
Political analysts pointed out that the opposition must embark on a comprehensive rebranding and structural reorganization to enhance its appeal.
The opposition parties must revamp their image and adopt new strategies to connect with a broader voter base.
Building Alliances Against APC
Observers believe that forming coalitions and strategic alliances is more critical now than ever before. To stand a chance against the APC, the opposition must present a united front, bridging ideological differences and rallying behind a common candidate or platform.
Close associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a leading opposition figure, revealed to Vanguard that his camp has growing optimism.
The source, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that Atiku and other opposition figures are keenly aware of the challenges ahead and are exploring options to create a formidable challenge in the next election cycle.
The source said, “Atiku, like his colleagues in opposition is fully aware of what is at stake. At this point, the issue of position sharing is not on their minds.
“What is on their minds is not about who will be President or Vice President, it is about saving our country from an avoidable catastrophe staring us in the face.
“Just watch and see. There’s a serious realignment of forces coming. This is unlike what has happened in the past because as a nation we are facing an existential threat. What we will do will be different from what we did in the past.
“We have a President who is becoming a full-blown dictator. Discussions have gone very well and very far, about stopping him. Details of what we’re doing and how far we’ve gone are not what we would want in the media space for very obvious reasons.
“Any sign of unity among the opposition attracts institutional attacks from the ruling party. You come out with your plans, they plant their people. The much as I can say for now is that registering a new political party is off the table.”
We Must Learn From 2023 Election – Ifoh
National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Obiora Ifoh, in an interview with Vanguard, said, “We all should learn from what happened to us as opposition in 2023.
“In spite of the electoral heist by the ruling party, imagine if all the votes that went to opposition parties went to one candidate. It will be nearly impossible for INEC and the APC to do what they did.
“Going forward, opposition parties and leaders must unite, make sacrifices to liberate our country. This is more than the personal ambitions of individuals or their political platforms.
“There is no need seeking to register a new party, the LP is here. This is a party that in less than eight months caused a major upset nationwide. For those of us in opposition, it is either we make sacrifices and come together or fizzle out and give the ruling party a free reign.”
Presidential Candidates Should Not Allow Person Ambition – Ameh
National Secretary of the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, told Vanguard that the ruling party has infiltrated the rank and file of the opposition.
Ameh said, “The opposition’s woes are compounded by the lack of internal political party processes.
“Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso are all qualified to be president but should not allow their personal ambitions take precedence over the collective goal of defeating the APC.
“If the opposition intends to win then they must all align themselves to the existing gentleman’s agreement between the North and South which rooted in power rotation so that the ability to mount a credible challenge is not compromised by any other interest.
“However, all is not lost. There is a growing recognition among Nigerians that the country needs a viable opposition to hold the ruling party accountable.
“The gentleman’s agreement between the south and north to take turns ruling the country could provide a basis for unity among opposition parties.
“If the South is indeed due to produce the next President, then opposition parties must be willing to make concessions and rally behind a single candidate that has the potential to defeat the incumbent president.
“Historically, opposition parties have played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy. During the Second Republic, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as the Leader of the Opposition, provided a robust check on the ruling party’s excesses.
“His example shows that a strong opposition can make a real difference in promoting good governance and accountability.
“To revitalize their fortunes, opposition parties must put aside their differences and work towards a common goal.
“They must also engage in robust policy debates and offer credible alternatives to the ruling party’s policies.
“As noted by many political observers, opposition politicians are already meeting and strategizing under various platforms.
“This is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to build a united and effective opposition.
“while the outlook for the opposition in Nigeria appears bright, there are still more work to be done.
“By uniting behind a single candidate, engaging in policy debates, and offering credible alternatives, opposition parties can revitalize their fortunes and provide a robust check on the ruling party.
“The 2027 election may yet provide an opportunity for the opposition to reclaim its relevance and shape Nigeria’s democratic future.”
Thirty-nine years after, former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida has thrown more light on two major events that shaped his administration – the assassination of renowned journalist Dele Giwa and the execution of his friend and colleague, Major General Mamman Vatsa, over a coup plot.
While he dismissed insinuations of his administration’s orchestration of the Giwa assassination on October 19, 1986 as “cheap and foolish,” Babangida said Vatsa’s death, via execution for a coup plot, “was a personal loss of a childhood friend.”
Among other major incidents, like the Gideon Orkar coup, the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) crisis, Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) protests, the C130 air crash, the Dele Giwa and Vatsa deaths had more personal impact on the former military president who described both as close friends.
Giwa, the founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch Magazine, was murdered in Ikeja, Lagos State on October 19, 1986 through a parcel bomb with an alleged federal government logo.
His close friend, associate and veteran journalist, Ray Ekpu, had in an interview stated that the government knew those who killed Giwa, recalling that the Oputa Panel said the Babangida administration was culpable.
Also, a retired police chief, Chris Omeben, who conducted the investigation on the murder of renowned journalist, told NAN in 2015 that the high-profile investigation was marred by interference from “high places”.
Babangida, who defined his friendship with Giwa as close, recounted how his death impacted him, while refuting insinuations that his administration was involved.
In his book, ‘A Journey In Service, which was launched on Thursday, Babangida said, “The insinuation that the parcel may have come from the headquarters of the administration was cheap and foolish. Why would an officially planned high-level assassination carry an apparent forwarding address of the killer? Why would a government-planned and executed crime point directly at the suspect? All this did not make sense to me.
“Much as this incident rattled me, I also accepted and understood it to be part of the challenges of the task I had taken on. I was responsible for acting in the public interest, but only in the context of the institutions and mechanisms of government. I had no alternative but to resort to the state’s investigative apparatus. The police and the intelligence services were all I had to rely on.”
Babangida accused The Newswatch legal team of resorting to play to the gallery of public sentiment which did not help the case.
He said the legal team directed public focus to only one suspect, his administration, which “may have hurt the path of a fruitful investigation.”
The former president described Giwa as his good friend with whom he spoke often on the phone, noting that the novelty and tragic impact of the incident badly shook the nation.
“I was equally shocked by it all. On a personal level, I had just lost a friend. Mr Giwa was a good friend, like a few other senior journalists in the country.
We spoke often on the phone and met a few times.
I valued his deep insight on national issues and respected his views and reach as a media leader.
“My sense of loss was, however, overwhelmed by the public outcry and the feeling of tragedy in the introduction of an entirely novel mode of killing in our country,” he said.
He said media hysteria did not help the investigation of the Giwa murder.
“As is typical of the Nigerian media, the direction was marked by an adversarial attitude towards government, which has remained the hallmark of the Nigerian media from its colonial heydays.
“It was an attitude of ‘we versus the government’ that has remained today. It is a situation in which the government is adjudged guilty even before the evidence in a case is adduced.
“When the Obasanjo civilian administration reopened the Giwa case at the Oputa Panel on Human and Civil Rights, I expected that the police and lawyers would come forward with new evidence as to their findings on the Giwa murder over the years. Nothing of such happened. The Giwa, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved after so many years. I keep hoping the truth will be uncovered in our lifetime or after us. More often than not, mysterious crimes are solved long after their commission,” the former president said.
IBB, as he is fondly called, also reflected on the drama that surrounding the coup and the eventual execution of General Vatsa, whom he described as a childhood friend.
Vatsa and nine other co-conspirators were executed for planning a coup against the Babangida administration in March 1986.
Some prominent Nigerians had sought clemency for Vatsa who insisted on his innocence.
Babangida however maintained that the evidence against Vatsa was overwhelming, recalling that he had dismissed several rumors of the coup plot involving his former friend.
“When the coup was first uncovered, I did not quite believe the extent of Vatsa’s involvement. Even worse were the details of the dastardly plans, including plans to bomb the Eko Bridge in Lagos and possibly hijack the presidential jet to eliminate the president.
“As the details kept coming in, it became harder not to believe the integrity of the disclosures. I felt a deep personal sense of betrayal. There were details of conversations, funding, travel itinerary and recruitment of troops to support the operation,” he said.
He added that Vatsa and the other conspirators had planned a bloody coup which would have plunged the country into darkness.
“I had to choose between saving a friend’s life and the nation’s future. Above all, everyone who had signed on to military career understood clearly what it meant to plan a coup and fail. The penalty was clear and unmistakable.”
He said given his closeness to Vatsa and the political interpretations that emerged about his coup plot after his trial and execution, it was not surprising that agents of subsequent political dispensations tried to weaponise the Vatsa coup as a political tool against him in the post-1999 political ploys.
“Unfortunately, some members of the Vatsa family lent their voices and presence to these ploys, which fizzled out in due course,” he said.

Ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Florida, the US President, Donald Trump on Thursday publicly declared his support for Republican Rep. Byron Donalds.
Although Donalds is yet to announce his interest in the race, Trump took to his page on Truth Social on Thursday to support the lawmaker.
According to Trump, as “governor, Byron would have a BIG Voice and would work closely with me to advance our America First Agenda.”
The US President stated that he has seen Donalds “tested at the highest most difficult levels, and he is a total winner”!
“Byron Donalds would be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement”, Trump added in his post.
ABC news reports that while no major candidate has formally declared their intention to run for governor in 2026, both Donalds and current First Lady of Florida, Casey DeSantis have been viewed as potential frontrunners.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 38 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP) to the next rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP).
The Commission also elevated 100 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSP) to Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP).
The Commission took the decision Thursday at the continuation of its extraordinary Plenary Meeting holding at its Corporate Headquarters in Jabi Abuja and presided over by Its Chairman, DIG. Hashimu Argungu rtd.
The meeting was also attended by Justice Adamu Paul Galmuje, retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Commissioner representing the Judiciary; DIG Taiwo Lakanu rtd, Commissioner representing the Police and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani Secretary to the Commission.

Nigeria has officially been designated as Africa's Digital Trade Champion, a role that could help create over 10 million new jobs across the continent by the end of 2025.
To this effect, Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to leading Africa’s digital trade agenda under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Vice President, who was represented by the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, stated this on Wednesday during the AfCFTA Digital Trade Workshop and Global Market at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
The workshop, which brought together officials from the federal and state governments, including Commissioners of Trades and Industry and private sector experts, has the theme: “Unlocking State Exports Potential.”
According to VP Shettima, Nigeria’s progress in digital commerce, services, and innovation, has positioned the country as the continent’s digital trade hub.
"Our innovations in mobile payments have transformed cross-border payments, financial inclusion, and digital transactions across the continent," he stated.
Nigeria’s appointment as Africa's Digital Trade Champion followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's December 2024 pledge in Cape Town to champion the digital trade agenda for all Africans.
This leadership role was formally recognised at the 38th African Union Heads of State Summit, where President Tinubu received a commendation from former Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou, the AfCFTA Champion.
Speaking at the two-day workshop, the Vice President also announced that Nigeria's Ambassador to the World Trade Organization, Dr. Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid, has been appointed chairperson of the Committee of Trade and Services Special Session, effective this month.
“The AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol aims to increase intra-African trade from 18% in 2022 to 50% by 2030. With over 109 million internet users and a thriving mobile economy, Nigeria has the foundation to lead Africa's digital commerce evolution,” Shettima noted.
The Internet economy is projected to contribute 5.2% of Africa's GDP this year, with the continent's digital economy expected to reach $180 billion, up from $115 billion in 2020.
“Initiatives such as the Federal Ministry of Investment's National Talent Export Programme, launched by the President in September 2023, the Outsource to Nigeria Initiative backed by the Office of the Vice President, and the 3 Million Technology Talents Programme of the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy are leading this growth and opening up opportunities for access to high-quality Nigerian talent at a global scale,” VP Shettima said.
He further noted that Nigeria has modernised its passport application system and invested in port infrastructure to streamline trade procedures, reducing customs processing times and enhancing the country's ability to handle a major share of West Africa's cargo.
"Let us move rapidly from the text of the protocol to the actuality of a digitally enabled trade as a catalyst for prosperity for all,” he added.
Also speaking, the Minister of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, described the workshop as a welcome development, recalling that last year, President Tinubu had approved the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund to empower Nigeria's young entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Noting that the significant approval of the Youth Investment Fund will be dedicated to supporting young Nigerians, the Minister noted that the Tinubu administration "is producing capital businesses for the young entrepreneurs engaging in agriculture, manufacturing, textile, creative industry, digital services and other export items so that they can meet the international trade standard.
"I also believe that this platform and strategic partnerships will help the youths to own their businesses to connect with the international digital trade and make Nigeria productive and globally competitive," he added.
On his part, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, said a nation that fails to embrace digital trade will certainly be left behind, just as he applauded the Tinubu administration for making significant strides in the ICT sector.
The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, said, "Digital trade platforms have eliminated traditional trade barriers, allowing businesses, both big and small, to participate in regional and global markets like never before. Today, we are reminded of the immense potential that lies within the African Continental Free Trade Area in a world increasingly defined by interconnectivity.
"We must seize this moment, not merely as a challenge, but as a powerful catalyst for growth and development. Digital transformation stands today as the cornerstone of innovation and sustainable growth. With 65% of our population under the age of 25, Nigeria possesses the demographic advantage to become a global digital powerhouse.“
On her part, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, commended the Vice President for championing digital trade innovations, saying while Nigeria has the tools to unlock its potential in the sector, AfCFTA is an opportunity to leverage the nation's strength, especially in the creative industry.
"As the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, I believe that the creative and culture industries are not just mere expressions but are real powerful drivers of the economy. Our ministry is committed to positioning Nigeria's creative sector as a cornerstone of export through growth under the free trade area.
"Through the Creative Economy Development Fund that was recently approved, we are pioneering a new frontier, enabling creators to transform their intellectual property into bankable assets, and I think this is a very important and formidable initiative," the minister stated.
Also speaking, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, outlined the agency's commitment to digital trade facilitation at the workshop.
He emphasised the central role of export promotion in Nigeria's current economic strategy.
"Customs has established a dedicated export command in Lagos, and they actively participated in AfCFTA's guided trade initiatives. We have deployed advanced digital solutions, including a new platform christened B'Odogwu, intended to improve transparency and efficiency by connecting all stakeholders on a unified system," he said.
On her part, Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, presented data on how digital identity systems will transform Nigeria's trade landscape.
"This shift to digital trade presents an enormous opportunity for Nigeria to diversify its economy and leverage non-oil assets," Coker-Odusote stated, projecting substantial growth in business registrations through digital channels in the coming years.
In his welcome remarks, Special Assistant to the President on ICT Policy, Dr Salihu Dasuki Nakande, said, "AU's endorsement of Nigeria as the AfCFTA Digital Trade Champion is a testament to our country's strategic role in shaping the future of digital commerce across the continent.
"With this endorsement, Nigeria is not just a participant—we are leading the charge in designing the frameworks, policies, and innovations that will drive Africa's digital economy forward."
Also, Special Assistant to the President on Export Promotion, Aliyu Bunu Sheriff, said, "In 2024, Nigeria's non-oil exports exceeded $5.4 billion, yet this is only a fraction of our true potential. To sustain economic growth, stabilise the naira, and create jobs, we must transition from a predominantly consumption-driven economy to one centred on production and value addition.
"The European Union imports over $120 billion worth of fruits and vegetables annually. If Plateau State, which is rich in fruits and vegetables, captures just 2-5% of this, that translates to $2.4 billion to $6 billion in exports."
Principal Research Fellow at Overseas Development Institute (ODI), Max Mendez-Parra, said, "The AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade certainly has the potential to advance digitally-driven industrialisation in Africa by fostering a conducive environment for digital commerce and innovation.
"To fully harness the benefits of the AfCFTA DTP and realise the opportunities it offers, Nigeria's public and private sectors need a robust implementation strategy that would also improve domestic regulations and unlock growth in GDP, employment and digital trade.”
Also, Country Director for the British High Commission's Department for Business and Trade in Nigeria, Mark Smithson, said, "AfCFTA is the African Union's most ambitious regional economic channel. The AfCFTA holds the potential to be a game changer for Nigeria's inclusive economic change, driving industrial growth, generating jobs and delivering inclusive prosperity across the continent as well as in Nigeria."

... Donates N8bn to Presidential Library, Pledges N2bn Annually Until Completion
The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has praised former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB, for implementing policies that liberated the private sector in Nigeria during his regime.
Dangote made this statement on Thursday during the unveiling of the book “A Journey in Service”, the autobiography of the former Head of State. The event also served as a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library.
Africa’s wealthiest man donated N8 billion to the IBB Presidential Library, to be paid at N2 billion annually over the four years allocated for the project’s completion. He further pledged that if the project extends beyond this timeframe, he would continue to donate N2 billion annually until it is finished.
Dangote, who is the largest employer of labour after the government, commended Babangida for his transformative policies that encouraged Nigerian investors to play prominent roles in the economy. He particularly highlighted the abolition of import licences, which helped stimulate domestic industries. These reforms, among others, ensured that Nigeria now has more private-sector involvement than any other country in Africa. This shift, he said, led to a contribution of 85% of the country’s GDP from the private sector, while the government contributes just 15%.
“Your Excellency, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done for Nigeria. Many may not realise that you were the architect of the private sector in Nigeria. Anyone in the private sector who has achieved prominence today owes it to you, as you provided us with the necessary licences. In the past, we used to struggle to obtain licences through intermediaries, including Indians,” he said.
Dangote recalled how Babangida’s policies facilitated the growth of Nigerian businesses, enabling them to thrive. “Your Excellency, in 1986, you abolished the requirements for import licences, and it was because of that decision that we were able to reach the highest levels of growth. I recall a day when you granted almost 30 of us banking licences. You also instructed five Nigerians to pay N1 million each for oil blocs.
“Your Excellency, I could continue to list all the reforms you introduced that liberated the private sector, which is why Nigeria has more private sector involvement than any other country in Africa. It is only in Nigeria where government contribution to GDP is a mere 15%, with the remainder being driven by the private sector,” he added while expressing hope that future Nigerian leaders will adopt similar policies for the betterment of the country. “I want to thank you once again, and I am confident that future leaders will continue to follow your example, working closely with the private sector.”
On his contribution to the IBB Presidential Library project, Dangote said, “Your Excellency, based on what I have observed, I believe this project will require at least four years to complete. I would like to contribute N2 billion each year for the next four years, amounting to N8 billion in total. Should the project extend beyond four years, I will continue to contribute N2 billion annually.”
Other prominent Nigerians also pledged contributions to the library’s construction. The Chief Launcher and Founder of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, donated N5 billion, while the co-Chief Launcher and Founder of the TY Danjuma Foundation, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, donated N3 billion.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, remarked that by writing his memoir, Babangida had not only contributed to making history but also to documenting it. However, he cautioned the former military Head of State to expect varied reactions to the book, including good, bad, and ugly ones.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also praised Babangida for the launch of his memoir and stated that Nigeria’s history would be incomplete without the story of the former Head of State.
During the book’s review, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo quoted Babangida as saying that late Moshood Abiola, who contested the 1993 presidential election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, won the election. However, Babangida described the annulment of the election as the most difficult decision of his life.
“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida was quoted as saying.
The former military leader noted that while the annulment of the election remained a defining moment in his career, he took solace in the fact that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honoured Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic title, a recognition reserved for Nigerian presidents.
Naija News reported that the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement.
According to the statement, the President approved Dr Saviour Enyiekere’s appointment as Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission for a five-year renewable term.
Until his appointment, Enyiekere, an environmental specialist, was the Deputy Chief of staff to the Senate President.
President Tinubu also approved the appointment of two commission members from each of the six geopolitical zones.
The 12 members are: Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi and Hon. Yusuf A. Yusuf Tabuka for North West, Aminu Ibrahim Malle and Alhaji Lawan Maina Mahmud for North East, Mark Hanmation Tersoo and Salihu Umar Agboola Balogun for North Central, Hon. Taiwo Olukemi Oluga and Hon. Afeez Ipeza-Balogun for South West.
Others are Hon. Nnanna Uzor Kalu and Festus Ifesinachi Odii for South East, and Patrick Giwa and Mrs. Mary Ekpenyong for South-South.
The statement further added that each of the members of the commission shall hold office for a renewable period of five years.
“Like the chairperson, members of the Commission shall hold office for a renewable term of five years,” it stated.
