A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and political commentator, Barrister Jesutega Onokpasa, has reportedly passed away.
Onokpasa, a lawyer and member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the 2023 general elections, died on Monday under yet-to-be-disclosed circumstances.
His death was announced on Tuesday via X by pro-APC crusader Okezie Atani.
He wrote, “We lost Barr. Jesutega Onokpasa, may his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Onokpasa was known for his vocal support of President Bola Tinubu and regularly appeared on television to defend the APC-led administration.

The Nigerian government has said it has commenced payment of five-month wage award arrears of N35,000 to civil servants since the end of May 2025.
This comes as the federal government clarified that it has implemented a N70,000 minimum wage payment to all its employees.
The Director of Media, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, made these clarifications known in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Monday ahead of the resumption of work after the Eid-Al-Adha holidays.
Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress, through its spokesperson, Benson Upah, in an Arise Television interview on Sallah day (last Friday), berated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the delay in payment of wage awards and allowances.
Upah had lamented that the Tinubu’s government had neglected workers’ welfare, as economic hardship took a toll on civil servants.
He described the delay as a “betrayal of trust” and “shameful”.
“This is a betrayal of trust and an abuse of our patience,” Upah declared, adding: “It’s completely unacceptable.”
However, reacting, Mokwa explained that the government has kicked off the payment of the arrears of the wage award.
He stated that the payment would be made in installments in the next four months.
“We have commenced the payment of N35,000 wage arrears.
“Except for some agencies that are independently paying for the wage award, for example, the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“The N35,000 wage award was an interim solution by the federal government before the N70,000 minimum wage approval.
“This was done in five months, but Labour argued that the payment didn’t commence immediately, having a five-month arrears.
“Of the five months, we have paid the first month. Four months are remaining, which would be paid in installments,” he told DAILY POST.
Similarly, Mokwa clarified that the federal government has commenced the minimum wage payment across its ministries, agencies, and parastatals.
“On the minimum wage pay, it has been implemented across the board,” he added.
Efforts to speak with Upah over the matter were unsuccessful as of the timf of filing this report.
Recall that in July Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law.
However, despite the minimum wage approval, there are still complaints of its full implementation at both federal and the state government levels nearly a year later.

While calling on Almighty God to admit in his heavenly kingdom Nigeria’s legends - Chief Mike Ejeagha, Professor Jibril Aminu and Muhammad Uwais, JSC, who joined our ancestors last week, Mr Osita Okechukwu in agony singled out what he dubbed Uwais Electoral Reform and Nigerians Debt Burden.
He lamented that 17 years down the line successive governments have failed to implement the vital sections of the Uwais Electoral Reform Committee recommendations, with attendant collateral damages, multidimensional poverty, gross unemployment, huge debt burden, crass inequality and general insecurity.
Okechukwu reminded us that the Uwais Report was meant to enhance higher percentage of voters participation, reduce electoral malpractices and engender free, fair, credible and transparent elections, and most importantly, the public nomination of chairmen and members of electoral commissions at the national and state level.
Okechukwu submitted that the best tribute to Justice Uwais is to posthumously adopt and implement the fine tenets of his report, as the only politically correct solution of restoration of democracy and global recognition.
He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to as a matter of urgent national importance, muster the political will and clear the Uwais debt burden by amending the constitution, albeit to make public appointments of chairmen and members of both national and state electoral commissions mandatory.
Okechukwu opined that not only will the amendment consolidate local government financial autonomy, in addition Almighty God has graciously obliged Mr President all the necessary arsenal viz,
cordial relationship with the National Assembly and same synergy with about 30 State Governors, as well as the overwhelming endorsement of Nigerians in this regard.
US President Donald Trump says he has no desire to restore his relationship with Elon Musk, the tech tycoon.
Both men fell out publicly after Musk left his role as Trump’s adviser a day after he criticised the president-backed tax bill.
Musk cited a contract fulfilment as a reason for his exit, but Trump said he asked the businessman to leave because he was “wearing thin”.
Trump’s comments came after both men traded words on social media.
In a series of posts on X, Musk accused the US president of being in the Jeffrey Epstein files, warning that his tariffs would cause a recession.
The tech tycoon also backed calls for Trump’s impeachment and called the president ungrateful for helping him win the elections.
Most of the posts have now been deleted.
However, Trump told NBC News in a phone interview on Saturday that Musk was “disrespectful to the office of the president”.
Asked if he thought his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive officer (CEO) was over, Trump said, “I would assume so, yeah”.
“No,” he added when asked if he had any wish to repair the relationship.
Trump said he had no plans to speak with his former employee any time soon.
“I’m too busy doing other things,” he said, adding, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
“I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the president,” he added.
The ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ approved by Trump has been passed by the house but is still being debated at the senate.
The president said there would be “serious consequences” if Musk, who is deeply critical of the bill, funds Democratic candidates to run against Republicans who vote in favour of the legislation.
Trump did not share what those consequences would be.
He also dismissed Musk’s accusations of him being named in the Epstein files, calling it “old news”.
“Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it,” he told NBC.
As part of the fallout consequences, Trump said he would cancel federal contracts awarded to Musk’s companies.
The president later told NBC he had not given any thought to his suggestion.
Trump also said he had received calls from allies who have recommended investigations into Musk’s business dealings and immigration record.
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has lamented that the state is currently under siege by terrorists and armed bandits.
Alia said that the recent attacks that have claimed several lives is beyond herders-farmers clash.
Recall that there has been a surge in attacks in the state in recent weeks, with several local government areas experiencing violent onslaughts that have claimed numerous lives.
The governor, who made this declaration on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, said that the attacks are well planned and executed by terrorists. “We are under siege.
The way these attacks come and the intel we receive, it is a directed calibrated plan and then executed.
“On a daily basis we are receiving those intel. Of late, each of those intel we receive, 60 to 65 per cent of it is quite accurate.
“And then when you realise what is going on, it is beyond just conflict, it is beyond just an ethnic fight between herders and farmers in our state, it is directed, it is planned and then it is executed, it is some terrorism,” he said.
The Catholic priest-turned politician insisted that he no longer views the attacks as a clash between farmers and herders, stating that they now involve specialized killers—terrorists who engage in a form of guerrilla warfare.
He said that for some reason, none of the killers was ever caught, adding that they come in the thick of the night, hit, run and nobody sees a trace.
Recall that several persons were on Friday evening feared dead and many others injured after suspected armed herdsmen launched a fresh attack on the Makurdi–Naka road.

President Bola Tinubu commiserates with the family and friends of boxing legend Obisia Nwankpa, who died on June 2, 2025, at 75.
Nwankpa represented Nigeria at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, competing in the light-welterweight division.
He won gold medals at the 1973 All-Africa Games in Lagos and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, in the same welterweight division.
Nwankpa held several prestigious titles, including Nigerian Lightweight Champion, African Boxing Union (ABU) Light-Welterweight Champion and Commonwealth Lightweight Champion.
President Tinubu notes that Nigeria's sporting community and Nigerians will long remember the legendary boxer and coach for the honour he brought to the country in the ring and the exciting moments he gave to fans throughout his career.
''The nation owes him a debt of gratitude for nurturing a new generation of boxers after retiring from active competition, including leading Nigeria's boxing team to the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics,'' he says.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has clarified that all its verification service platforms remain fully functional and accessible to all authorized partners, including security agencies.
In a statement on Thursday, the Commission firmly denied claims that it had denied the Police Service Commission (PSC) access to its verification server.
Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, described the reported “inability of the Police Service Commission to access the NIMC verification server” as misleading and inaccurate.
He suggested that any challenges faced by the PSC may be due to internal issues within the commission itself, not from NIMC’s end.
The statement reads: “To set the record straight, the NIMC granted verification access to all Nigerian Police formations for the verification of the National Identification Number (NIN). The NPF, PSC and other security agencies have been enjoying uninterrupted verification services for over five years.
“NIMC has provided top-notch verification services for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force, as conducted by the PSC and at no time have there been any complaints or issues regarding NIN Verification by the NPF or PSC.
“The Commission has a robust and harmonious working relationship with the Nigerian Police Force and the Police Service Commission. The Information Communications and Technology (ICT) department of the Nigeria Police Force is actively managing the long-standing verification and integration service between the NIMC and all Nigeria Police formations.
“NIMC will continue to provide flawless verification services for the purpose of recruitment, security mapping, cybercrime control, and any other security matters.
“The framework by which NIMC provides services to the security agencies was recently restructured for standardization and effective implementation, following consultation with the Office of the National Security Adviser, and NPF has confirmed the verification services have continued to be available. We therefore believe that any service interruption experienced by PSC may be due to internal matters.
“NIMC is committed to providing excellent verification services to the PSC, NPF and all its partners but the terms and conditions inherent must be adhered to for uninterrupted flow of service.”

Land-Grab: FHA Officials Ignore Wike, Allocate Setbacks, Public Spaces In Lugbe Estate, Cornershops

In violation of the order by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Federal Ministry of Housing, officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) have recommenced the allocation of car parks and open spaces earmarked for public conveniences in their estates. Most affected are the Cornershops within their estates where parking spaces, access roads and setbacks are being allocated for development by individuals.
Last Tuesday, some of the legal shop owners whose buildings and access roads are most impacted by the illegal developments, petitioned the Executive Director (Estate Services), Arch. Ezekiel Nya-Etok over the matter. They demanded a halt to such private developments, and the indiscriminate allocations of setbacks and open spaces meant for public convenience within the Sector ‘F’ Corner shops.
In 2023 when the controversial allocations first started at the Cornershops of the FHA Estate in Lugbe, a violent confrontation had ensued when owners of Corner shops at Sector ‘F’ resisted attempts to build new shops on the setbacks from the adjourning road which would block entrance to existing shops.
The indiscriminate building of new shops on setbacks between existing buildings and the roads were allegedly approved by officials of the Federal Housing Authority which owns the estate, in clear violation of their own masterplan.
One of the beneficiaries, Emmanuel Amos Adebayo, who said he was allocated one of the setbacks for his private office, was prevented from building the office. The adjourning shop owners had alerted the Lugbe police station when the matter nearly resulted into violent confrontation between Adebayo’s workers and staff of Fingerprint Communications Limited which operates the DSTV franchise in Lugbe. They insisted that the space was the only setback between their office, which was once occupied by Happy Note Microfinance Bank, and the access road.
The Police officer, Inspector Samuel Olusola, who arrived at the site to forestall any violence, eventually took Mr. Adebayo and his construction workers to the Lugbe police station. The DPO, Supt. Ugochukwu later ordered Mr. Adebayo to stay action while all the parties seek further clarification from the Federal Housing Authority.
A copy of the building approval in Mr. Adebayo’s possesion was signed by one Ms. Queen Phillips, a staff of the FHA field office in Lugbe. Our enquiries at the office however revealed that Ms. Phillips who purportedly signed the document has since been redeployed to the FHA office in Gwarinpa. It is not clear whether her deployment had to do with such controversial allocations.
Head of the Town Planning department at the Federal Housing Authority, Surveyor Eyong had denied knowledge of such allocation. He however met some of the allottees and shop-owners mostly impacted by the illegal allocations, and thereafter halted any further developments.
Last week, following the retirement of Surveyor Eyong, Mr. Adebayo and other allotees returned to site, prompting another round of heated exchanges at the Cornershops.
Investigations reveal that the controversial allocations commenced shortly before the Housing and Urban Development Minister, Alhaji Musa Dangiwa, assumed duty.
Many of the shop owners at the Lugbe Cornershops who spoke to reporters on the matter, lamented that many of the Cornershops in Lugbe have been turned into residential homes allegedly with the connivance of FHA field office in Lugbe. The FCT Minister who has frowned at such indiscriminate constructions, insists that such buildings which have turned Lugbe and other settlements into big slums and hide-outs for hoodlums, will be demolished.

The attention of Anambra State Government has been drawn to a malicious and deliberately fabricated online publication and social media comments making spurious claims that the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, consulted a native doctor regarding his reelection prospects. The State Government hereby debunks the allegations as totally false.
For the interest of the general public, the video clip being maliciously circulated and misrepresented, as evidence of native doctor consultation, was taken during a recent official government meeting with Anambra-based content creators. The session, facilitated by the Special Senior Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, was organised to strengthen the partnership between the State Government and the creative industry as part of Governor Soludo’s commitment in encouraging and supporting Anambra’s creative economy.
During the interactive session, content creators were encouraged to showcase their talents, ask questions, and share their concerns about the creative industry in the state. As part of the presentations, one of the content creators performed a native doctor skit, a common comic genre in Nigerian entertainment, to demonstrate their creative abilities to the Governor and other officials present. This was purely an entertainment performance by a content creator, not a consultation session.
The State Government thus found it deeply disappointing that critics and political opponents would stoop so low as to deliberately fabricate malicious narratives from an innocent entertainment performance and spread misinformation to mislead the public.
Rather than engage in frivolous consultations, Governor Soludo has consistently demonstrated his commitment to developing Anambra’s creative economy through investment plans as part of the state’s economic diversification strategy. The recently commissioned SOLUTION FUN CITY project is part of such investment plans.
The State Government also clarified that Governor Soludo does not need consultations with any native doctor to win reelection, as he relies solely on the support of Ndi Anambra based on his impressive performance and focus on delivering the SOLUTION AGENDA by transforming Anambra State into a livable and prosperous homeland.
Therefore, the Anambra State Government calls on Ndi Anambra, media channels and social media users to disregard the misinformation concerning the circulated video clip. The public is also urged to always verify information before sharing or amplifying content and reject malicious stories sponsored to mislead the public.
As always, Governor Soludo remains committed to the development of Anambra State and will not be deterred by the antics of desperate political opponents who have chosen the path of falsehood over constructive engagement.

The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has dismissed reports claiming it has 10,000 job openings, describing the information as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Taiwo Hassan, the FCSC clarified that only 2,130 vacancies were available under its recently concluded online recruitment exercise, which ended on March 17.
“The attention of the Federal Civil Service Commission has been drawn to a publication circulating on conventional and online media, which stated that the Commission’s available vacancies were 10,000. This is not true,” the statement read.
The Commission advised the public to disregard the misinformation and to rely solely on official channels for accurate updates regarding the recruitment process.
It also announced that the shortlisting process had been completed, and candidates selected for the next stage—the Computer-Based Test (CBT)—would be notified through various media platforms and its official website: www.fedcivilservice.gov.ng.

The focus of the Federal Civil Service Commission ( FCSC) on enthroning meritocracy in the nation's civil service is in sync with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, especially his expressed desire to run a government of national competence, according to Prof. Tunji Olaopa.
Prof. Olaopa who is the Chairman of the FCSC, spoke at the weekend at a meeting during the courtesy call by the leadership of the Alumni Association of Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI).
The executive of LMI was led by its President, Abubakar Tijjani-Garba, during a courtesy visit to Olaopa in his office in Abuja.
The LMI is a fellowship founded by Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, CFR, the 9th Speaker of the House of Representatives and the current Chief of Staff to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
According to Olaopa, the FCSC is being repositioned to restore the prime place of merit in career management in the civil service, through a concerted strategy for a structured and more systematic execution of the merit principle, and therewith, reprofile its application in the implementation of the federal character policy within the framework of an overarching strategy to restore competency-based operations and human resource management in the civil service.
To him, the overall objective of the quest for meritocracy is the recreation of the glorious days of the civil service of the 1960s and the 1970s and thereby transform the service into a world-class institution.
The professor of public administration said that even before he was appointed as the chairman of the FCSC, he had been interested in the notion of a government of national competence as espoused by His Excellency the President. Thus, he is interested in creating an enabling climate within the space governed by the FCSC, that will encourage more talented youths and high-end professionals to want to make a career in the public service.
According to him, the FCSC is aware of the imperative to make the civil service attractive to the millennial generation and Gen Z.
He said this whole dynamic will lead to job re-evaluation, the rethinking of the intellectual bases of skills of the many cadres in the service and their re-skilling, and institution of a more competitive and affordable wage system operated within technical-rational parameters as a "basis for significant restoration of the Federal Government status as an employer of choice in the national economy".
While he noted the importance of youths showing interest in the civil service, he, however, acknowledged that the sector is not meant for all-comers.
According to him, some youths will go into the military, the private sector, self-employment and other endeavours outside the civil service. Meaning that there is a specific orientation that recommends a professional public servant and some distinct attributes that stand him or her out.
Acknowledging the vital place of the youths in national development, Olaopa said that they "constitute a template for rewriting the dynamism of the national project burdened by the tragic narratives of ethno-regional and religious issues ".
Consequently, he noted that whatever would strengthen what he identified as the youth agenda would require significant reforms in the public, civic society and in the education sector. Thus for him, what is needed in the educational sector is not just book learning but intentional drive to support mental remodeling to build national capacity for "learning to live together" as " a significant component of national values reorientation to harness and transform our diversity into a defining social capital".
In this regard, he commended the vision of Gbajabiamila to prepare the younger Nigerians through LMI for pubic sector leadership. He said Gbajabiamila continued to commit his resources to LMI even after transiting from the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the office of the Chief of Staff to the President.
Earlier, Tijjani-Garba said that they were at the commission to express appreciation to Olaopa for his contribution to LMI and especially his role as a mentor to its members. He said his books had greatly impacted their lives.
Tijjani-Garba outlined some of the coming programmes of the LMI that he urged Olaopa to support. They include the birthday of LMI's founder Gbajabiamila that will be celebrated on Democracy Day.
Other programmes include the launch of an alumni book where they want Olaopa to be the reviewer , and a pre-United Nations Assembly event.
The members of the LMI also want to canvass a review of the nation's educational curriculum and embark on a give-back to the community programme that include tree planting and a novelty match.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed very dear congratulations to His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, CON, Governor of Ogun State and Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, on the occasion of his 65th birthday.
In his congratulatory message, Governor Soludo hailed Governor Abiodun’s remarkable contributions to the governance and development of Ogun State and the Southern Nigeria region.
Governor Soludo noted that the leadership, patriotism, and dedication of Governor Abiodun have been inspiring, fostering unity and progress within the region and across Nigeria
Governor Soludo also affirmed that as the deputy chairman in the Southern Governors' Forum, he has witnessed firsthand Governor Abiodun’s untiring resolve and collaborative spirit, which embody the essence of true leadership.
Thus, Governor Soludo celebrates this momentous occasion with his brother Governor, and prays for his continued strength, good health, and more wisdom to navigate the challenges ahead in driving progress and prosperity for our people and the entire nation.
