Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has stated that he completely condemns the tribal politics that accompanied the Lagos Governorship election.

WITHIN NIGERIA reports that tribal politics became prevalent after the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi, won the presidential election in Lagos State on February 25.

Following the debate over the tribe of Lagos LP governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, tribal politics became more heated.

Since then, there have been widespread ethnic sentiments and hate speeches, as well as debate over who truly owns Lagos.

While some Igbos claim that the state belongs to no one, the Yorubas are adamant that they are the true aboriginal owners of Lagos and that the easterners are only visitors.

This comes as some Igbo voters claim that they were denied the right to vote because of their ethnicity, while others claim that they have been physically attacked by Yorubas.

However, in a tweet on Sunday via his Twitter handle, Keyamo stated that he is completely opposed to tribal politics, emphasizing that he is a product of various regions of Nigeria.

The minister stated that he has never written or promoted one tribe over another, even during campaigns. He went on to say that no one should ever enrage an entire tribe for political reasons.

He wrote:

I TOTALLY deplore tribal politics. I am a product of different regions of Nigeria. I’ve NEVER in my life written or promoted one tribe over another, even in campaigns. No one should ever rile a whole tribe & this applies to all sides – North/South/East/West in Nigeria’s politics.
