Elton John tears into Brexit: ‘I am a European. I am not a stupid, colonial, imperialistic English idiot’

Elton John didn’t mince his words as he professed his hatred for Brexit during his final ever tour.

Performing in Verona, Italy the award-winning musician told the listening audience he is “sick to death of politicians” as he defined his stance on Brexit.

Before he burst into song during the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, the 72-year-old told the enraptured audience the vote to leave the European Union has “torn people apart.”

Addressing the crowd in Italy, the musician said: “I’m ashamed of my country for what it has done. It’s torn people apart … I am sick to death of politicians, especially British politicians. I am sick to death of Brexit.

“I am a European. I am not a stupid, colonial, imperialist English idiot.”

Mr John is making his views known on Brexit during the final leg of his farewell tour.

Unfortunately for the Italian fans hoping for another bite of the cherry during his second Thursday performance scheduled in Verona went amiss.

The musician was forced to cancel the gig under the doctor’s orders after his vocal cords were inflamed due to a cold, according to the Guardian.

He will perform two UK dates this month, in Hove and Cardiff, before returning in November 2020 for 18 further UK dates.

‘I don’t think people were told the truth’

It is safe to say the performer is not a huge fan of Brexit.

In July 2018, he voiced his concerns over the referendum result, stating he didn’t “think people in Britain were told the truth to start with”.

He added: “They were promised something that was completely ridiculous and wasn’t economically viable.”

Despite his frustrations over the political state of the UK, Elton John is experiencing a stratospheric resurgence following the release of heavily-lauded biopic Rocketman.

The film, starring Taron Egerton as the performer, takes fans through the musician’s musical career – and doesn’t skip on the hairy details around John’s struggles with an eating disorder and substance abuse.

The movie currently has an 88 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
