Doris Day death: Hollywood legend and singer dies, aged 97

Doris Day, the Hollywood icon best known for her work in the late 50s and 60s, has died, her foundation has announced. She was 97 years old.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed that the actor and activist died early today, 13 May, at her Carmel Valley, California, home.

The foundation said in a statement that she was surrounded by close friends and “had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia”.

Day was once one of the biggest female stars in the world, appearing in such classic films as Calamity Jane, Pilow Talk and Love Me or Leave Me

She won acclaim for her roles in various musicals, with her performances of both “Secret Love” and “Que Sera Sera” winning Academy Awards.

Day retired from show business in her 50s, deciding to follow her dreams and become an animal activist.
