The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set up an N800 billion National Communications Backbone project to fast-track broadband infrastructure deployment across the country.

To this end, the NCC recently inaugurated an industry-wide committee which will see to the implementation of the project.

According to the NCC, the project will facilitate the expansion of broadband services in the country and hasten the achievement of the 70% broadband penetration set in the Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP 2020-2025).

Actualising broadband targets: Chaired by NCC’s Director of Digital Economy, Dr Augustine Nwaulune, the National Broadband Infrastructure Joint Committee (NBIJC) will support the drive towards actualising the broadband targets in Nigeria.

Members of the committee include Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos), and Tower Companies (TowerCos).

Reason for the committee: The Director of Legal and Regulatory Services at the NCC, Josephine Amuwa, who presided over the inauguration of the Committee on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta, said the emergence of the committee was due to the need to inject a broad-based industry approach to address challenges impeding the actualisation of broadband targets.

Danbatta said the Committee is expected to drive the targets set by the NNBP, including the deployment of 120,000 kilometres of fibre across the country, deepening of broadband penetration to 70% by 2025, and connection of 60% of Communication towers with fibre, among other targets, as stipulated in its approved Terms of Reference (ToR).

  • “I appreciate your willingness and readiness to make a considerable investment of time and talent to participate in this Committee. We appreciate that you will provide an invaluable perspective as we seek to address gaps impeding the actualisation of the NCB and NNBP initiatives.
  • “The depth and scope of experiences represented by the broad spectrum of this Committee’s membership will, no doubt, provide the Commission with much-needed insight and drive to overcome the challenges facing broadband infrastructure deployment in the country, and even exceed the current set targets,” the EVC stated.

Committee’s Term of Reference: The Committee’s six-point ToR include enhancing collaboration between MNOs and InfraCos towards achieving the target of the NCB and designing an NCB network architecture and a harmonized plan that will create a more viable business case capable of attracting investors. They will also establish synergy between the MNOs and the InfraCos, and facilitate infrastructure deployment.

The committee will collaborate with NCC to organize an NCB financing workshop and invite all the major financial institutions, MNOs and InfraCos, and present the project, estimated at N800 billion, for adoption and financing.

Equally, the committee is mandated to initiate engagements with identified sources of funding including Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), Africa Development Bank (AfDB), and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) among others.

Controversial journalist, Kemi Olunloyo continues to roll out more questionable claims about the popular crooner, Davido in her #TheAdelekeCurse docuseries.

Recall that following the death of Ifeanyi Adeleke, Kemi Olunloyo launched the docuseries while alleging that a generational curse is responsible for the deaths being witnessed around Davido’s circle.

However, in another short audio note, Kemi Olunloyo reflected on the people Davido lost not quite long ago ranging from his bodyguard, his friend and crew member Obama DMW, his photographer Fortune, and so on with the most recent being his son, Ifeanyi.

According to her, the curse is laid on the most successful person in the family and everybody around them begins to die periodically.

Kemi Olunloyo who claimed to have been under the same curse revealed that she broke hers in 2015.

Captioning the audio, she wrote:

#TheAdelekeCurse is a docuseries based on several bad things happening in one elite Nigerian family. The generational curse moves through one member and everywhere they go those around them start falling.
To break the curse takes a lot of cultural ingenuity.

Osun indigenes break curses at the water. The Osun are the only people in Nigeria to worship YEMOJA THE WATER GODDESS ????‍♀️??

Esabod is the only one who will explain how I broke the Olunloyo curse in 2015. I was the star of the family. Pls learn Culture. Even the Americans have plenty. Google the #KennedyCurse

Prophet Elijah Bamidele Ilukholor, Founder of Christ House of Prayer and Deliverance Ministry, has disclosed some of his spiritual findings concerning death of Ifeanyi, son of Nigerian musician, David Adeleke, aka Davido.

Prophet Elijah, in a new video, consoled the singer over the passing of his first son before going ahead to state that Ifeanyi’s death was a spiritual affair, and his mother, Chioma Rowland, was the target but the boy ended up paying the price.

The Cleric claimed that in the spiritual realm, Chioma was the intended target to die.

According to him, Davido would have encountered an intense tribulation if the enemy had suceeded in their evil plans against Chioma.

The clergyman averred that more impending dangers will still come the way of the singer and his family if they refuse to seek the face of God.

Chief Akin Osuntokun, a former Political Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and erstwhile Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in this interview, speaks on what he calls the attempt to polarize the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, and how the Yoruba group is a victim of its own success and relevance. Excerpts:

What do you make of what is now seen as the polarisation of Afenifere by the presidential ambitions of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr Peter Obi?

One way or another, it is inevitable. The good and bad thing is that Afenifere is a victim of its own success and relevance. You should expect a similar imported partisanship and division within any Nigerian body of socio-political consequence. One that readily comes to mind is the Christian Association of Nigeria.

You should expect same of preeminent families like that of President Muhammadu Buhari and his spouse especially where you have a temperamentally liberated one like the present Nigerian first lady, Aisha Buhari. You would have heard of the role she played at the presidential primary of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Credible speculations have it that she was the ‘campaign manager’ of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a situation where the husband daily celebrates his detachment from the current electioneering season. Back to Afenifere, there is a fundamental question about the organisation that has not been resolved which dogs its existence and permanently renders it liable to divisiveness.

Is it a political party or a Yoruba socio-cultural pressure group? Is the leader of the organisation the leader of the Yoruba or the leader of the regional branch of an incipient left of centre Nigerian political party? It is this identity crisis that is at the root of its vulnerability to political division and exploitation.

Part of the problem is that the shoes left behind by its founder, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, are too big for any successor hence the contrivance of the collegiate leadership model. In Awolowo was combined a unique intellectual and political dominance that was impossible to replicate.

He anticipated this kind of political schizophrenia way back in 1963 and gave the ruling that so far as Afenifere was collapsible with the Action Group, AG, the former is necessarily a political party that transcends its initial Yoruba origin. Now, given the durability of the politics of ethno-regional cleavages in Nigeria, there is a limit to which Afenifere can distance itself from the particularistic interest of the Yoruba, hence the willingness not to contest the perception as a pan-Yoruba political party.

This has remained its primary instrument of political mobilisation. There was also the intervention of the 1962-70 violent factionalisation of Nigeria along ethno-regional division during which the concept of Yoruba leader (Asiwaju of the Yoruba) was legitimised with Awolowo as the primary beneficiary. I

t is in this respect that Afenifere is a response to the larger crisis of the Nigerian political environment. Thereby, the relevance and crisis of Afenifere tend to correspond to the intensity of Nigeria’s crisis at any particular moment.

What can you say about the Tinubu endorsement by Pa Fasoranti, Afenifere former leader, after Pa Adebanjo, who is incumbent leader, had endorsed Mr Peter Obi?

The answer to this question will be found in the opportunistic Yoruba rationalisation that: ‘Omo eni o sedi bebere, ka fi ileke sid omo elomiran’ (you turn a blind eye to morality where your self interest is at stake).

Predicated on morality or what Chief Olu Falae calls equity, there is no way any Yoruba can justify the decision to support Tinubu over Obi. The wrongness of this decision is amplified by the fact that on the scale of personal merit, the latter towers above the former.

I have argued that if God wants Yoruba to play the ethnic card, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and not Tinubu would have emerged the APC candidate. There is also the ancillary argument that the strategic interest of the Yoruba for the restoration of federalism, political equilibrium and balance in Nigeria is best served by reaching political accommodation with the Igbo.

The open secret of Nigerian politics is that the only beneficiary of the status-quo of recurring alienation between the Yoruba and Igbo is the northern hegemony. There is the applicable quote attributed to Harriet Tubman: “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.”

Some observers are of the view that Pa Fasoranti’s old age is being exploited by the Tinubu group and those who claim to speak for him…

There is no doubt that left alone to take a political position, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, would not have found himself in the thick of this controversy. There is no way Fasoranti would have lent his personality to any political controversy with a clear potential to destroy Afenifere.

The present portrayal of Fasoranti as a chest thumping power politics aficionado is not consistent with that of a self-effacing and cultured patriarch who, unprompted, deemed it fit to hand over his office to his deputy two years ago. (Former) Governor Tinubu, in his capacity as the presidential candidate of the APC and depending on his level of desperation, will go to several lengths to suborn the support of an organisation like Afenifere.

After the damaging and instructive loss of the Osun State governorship election soon after he became the APC presidential standard bearer, he has a point to prove on his acceptability at the home front and his vaunted political stronghold

Pa Fasoranti, in a statement, said Pa Adebanjo is no longer the leader of Afenifere. What’s your reaction to this? (PS: Pa Fasoranti has since recanted)

By any standard, this amounts to taking things too far. But as I speak I am aware that any such attribution has been retracted. Historically, Yoruba abhors unmerited political persecution and if the proposal (of removing Adebanjo) holds as true, we can kiss Afenifere goodbye.

What are the implications of the controversy to Yoruba unity?

Yoruba unity is a nebulous concept. There is nothing to be celebrated in a unity to serve an inherently ignoble end. Is there any good purpose served by the unity of Germany behind Adolf Hitler? Is there a thing worthy of applause in the unity of the Ife community behind the cause of a unqualified son of the soil as Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University?

The utility of Yoruba unity can only be categorically prescribed where the long term interest (of universally applicable standard) is under threat. Yoruba should abstain from joining the multitude to do evil.

Nollywood actress cum politician, Tonto Dikeh has emphatically stated that her bedroom affairs has no relevance on her quest for a political career.

The mother-of-one, who is the deputy governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Rivers State, said this during a chat on ‘WithChude’ with Chude Jideonwo.

Asked about voters’ perception of her and her relationships, which had been fodder for public conversations, she responded:

“You’re not ready for change, because you cannot be looking at my bedroom life, and telling me that I cannot change you, that I can’t change the state. That’s irrelevant. If we’re having a marriage conversation, that can come up, but if we’re talking about leadership, that shouldn’t even be a yardstick of a conversation.

“I don’t want to say too much, but the truth is, we all know what we want. What if a husband has nothing for me? What if that’s not where I want life to carry me? There’s so many so many things that people should look at. What if I have said to myself, I do not ever want? I’m just saying, you know? What if a person has said to herself, I don’t want to ever get married, but I want to rule? So, I can’t do that because there’s no man beside me? We should be wise.”

Asked if she’s worried about her opponents using her relationship breakdowns against her, she said:

“They will and I’m very ready for it. I think I will be that candidate who will say, ‘Hey, you missed that part, touch it.’

I’m not scared of anything; I own my life with my chest. I am not ashamed of what I’ve been through, what I’m going to go through, or what I came out from. No!”

Maternal health experts have urged women to take the prevention of sexually transmitted infections seriously, noting that they are more prone to them because of their anatomy.

According to the experts, women are more at risk of contracting STDs than men because the female genital tract has a wider surface area than those of men.

They also stressed that sexually transmitted diseases can have tremendous impact on women than men.

They noted that STDs can destroy the female reproductive system and cause infertility in women if left untreated.

Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise in separate interviews, the gynaecologists stated that most women with STDs are not even aware that they have them, noting that they only get to know when they go for a test.

One of the experts and a former chairman, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Lagos chapter, Dr. Joseph Akinde, told our correspondent that women with STDs are asymptomatic and therefore do not seek treatment, unlike the men that often manifest symptoms and go for treatment.

Akinde, who is also the Medical Director of Living Spring Hospital, Ejigbo, a private medical facility in Lagos, stated that STDs cause more damage in women than in men.

The gynaecologists explained, “In a number of instances, women, when they have an infection, the infection may be asymptomatic, and yet it is doing the damage.

“But with men, it is always symptomatic. That women do not manifest symptoms does not mean that they do not have them. The disease is in them, but they do not have symptoms.

“For example, if a man comes down with gonorrhea, he is going to have excruciating pain in the next five days. But a woman can have gonorrhea and may not know while the thing is causing serious damage to her system.

“So, STD has higher damage on the woman than the man. Women can know that they have it by going for a test. If a woman has problems getting pregnant, if she is married, those are the things that could make her go for a test.”

The physician, however, said that women with STDs might experience low abdominal pain and vaginal discharge as symptoms.

Akinde said, “A woman may have STD in her system but will not know and thus could be transmitting the infection sexually to a man.”

The gynaecologist stressed further said STDs have a more severe impact on women than on men, stressing that women with STDs can experience chronic ill health, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility.

He said, “It damages their reproductive system. It causes a tubal blockage, the woman cannot get pregnant naturally. STD has a great psychological and social effect on women.”

To prevent it, Akinde advised women to avoid multiple sex partners.
