Italian archaeologists have unearthed 24 beautifully preserved bronze statues in Tuscany, Italy believed to date back to 2300 years ago in ancient Roma.

The statues were discovered under the muddy ruins of an ancient bathhouse in San Casciano dei Bagni, a hilltop town in the Siena province, about 160km (100 miles) north of the capital Rome.

The statues depict Hygieia, Apollo and other Greco-Roman gods.

Most of the statues - which were found submerged beneath the baths alongside around 6,000 bronze, silver and gold coins - date to between the 2nd Century BC and the 1st Century AD. The era marked a period of "great transformation in ancient Tuscany" as the area transitioned from Etruscan to Roman rule, the Italian culture ministry said.

Jacopo Tabolli, an assistant professor from the University for Foreigners in Siena who helped in the discovery, suggested that the statues had been immersed in thermal waters in a sort of ritual. "You give to the water because you hope that the water gives something back to you," he observed.

The statues, which were preserved by the water, will be taken to a restoration laboratory in nearby Grosseto, before eventually being put on display in a new museum in San Casciano, the Italian culture ministry said.

Massimo Osanna, director general of Italy's state museums, said the discovery was the most important since the Riace Bronzes and "certainly one of the most significant bronze finds ever made in the history of the ancient Mediterranean". The Riace Bronzes - discovered in 1972 - depict a pair of ancient warriors. They are believed to date back to around 460-450 BC.

Tesla chief Elon Musk sold nearly $4 billion worth of shares in the electric car company, Securities and Exchange Commission filings showed Tuesday.

This is coming more than a week after he closed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter.

Musk has been pushing for ways to pay for the massive deal, for which he took on billions of dollars in debt and earlier sold $15.5 billion worth of shares in Tesla.

On Tuesday, documents filed with the United States SEC indicated that he had disposed of more than 19 million shares, in excess of $3.9 billion.

Musk took control of Twitter and fired its top executives in late October after a drawn-out back-and-forth between the world’s richest person and the influential social media company.

The billionaire initially tried to withdraw from the deal after his unsolicited offer was accepted in April.

In July, he said he was canceling the contract because Twitter had misled him over the number of fake “bot” accounts, allegations rejected by the company.

After Musk sought to terminate the sale, Twitter filed a lawsuit to hold the entrepreneur to the agreement. With a trial looming, he revived his takeover plan.

Founder and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has launched a new social media app called Bluesky.

Bluesky is creativity designed to decentralise social network protocol, such that multiple social networks, each with its own systems of curation and moderation, can interact with other social networks through an open standard.

It should be understood that each social network using the protocol is an “application” and at the moment Bluesky social media platform is accepting users for its beta testing phase.

While launching it, Dorsey said Bluesky will offer “a new foundation for social networking which gives creators independence from platforms, developers the freedom to build, and users a choice in their experience.”

As many social media enthusiasts are still pondering on what Bluesky is all about, following the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter by the United States’ richest billionaire, Elon Musk, here are simple facts about the evolution of Bluesky you should know.

1. Dorsey first announced the Bluesky initiative in 2019 on Twitter. The company’s Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal invited initial working group members in early 2020.

2. In early 2021, Bluesky was in a research stage, with 40–50 people from the decentralized technology community active in evaluating options and gathering proposals for the protocol.

3. In March 2022, Bluesky announced three of its first employees. Aaron Goldman, who had previously worked for Google and Twitter, was hired as a security engineer. Paul Frazee and Daniel Holmgren were hired as protocol engineers.

4. On April 15, 2022, Jack Dorsey acknowledged that the initial progress on the project from the first developers was off to a slow start.

5. On April 26, 2022, Bluesky put out a statement saying that the project will operate without the influence of Elon Musk’s proposed takeover of Twitter, stating that Bluesky has been independently functioning as a public benefit limited liability company since February 2022.

This offers Bluesky the freedom to put its resources toward its mission without an obligation to return money to shareholders.

6. In May 2022, Bluesky released the code for an experimental personal data server and a command-line client alongside a high-level overview of the network architecture. They also revealed that they will begin to share the platform’s development process before the process is complete.

7. In October 2022, Bluesky announced a roadmap and additional technical details about the AT Protocol that will power applications. Bluesky also started accepting signups to test a forthcoming version of the application.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, dismissed speculations that Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has resigned his position as chairman of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

A statement released by the spokesperson of PDP PCC, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the report as fake.

He said: “Our campaign assures Nigerians, as well as all pro-democracy and development partners, that such idea is not in the contemplation of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel.”

He added: “Emmanuel, this afternoon, at the flag-off of the PDP governorship campaign, which held at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, declared that the rumour is a lie ‘from the pit of hell’ and that he remains the chairman of the PDP PCC.

“The appointment of Emmanuel as chairman was predicated on his belief and commitment to the PDP, the ideals of our founding fathers, as well as his unwavering confidence in our presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as the leader that has the required capacity to lead the charge to rescue and rebuild our nation.

“Emmanuel is effectively and committedly leading a successful campaign that will take our party to victory and will not be distracted by the wishful thinking of the enemies of Nigeria.”

MEANWHILE, Special Adviser to PDP National Chairman, Simon Imobo-Tswam, expressed optimism that despite intra-party squabbles, Atiku Abubakar, would still win the 2023 general elections.

In an interview, yesterday, Imobo-Tswam said: “Yes, in spite of the opposition of the five governors, PDP will still win. Why do I say so, elections are not going to be held tomorrow. We are still talking. The window is still open and our message is that of diplomacy.

“With reconciliation, we are stronger. We may have issues in the party but our eyes are on the ball. That is our focus. Our opponents are not in PDP; they are outside PDP. They are APC, and that is our target.

“We are talking. Rivers will vote for PDP. Rivers has been PDP since 1999, and the governor cannot just throw away the history because of issues that can be resolved. PDP will win in Benue, Rivers; we are targeting 25 states. We cannot rule out Benue, Oyo or Rivers. Twenty-five is more than what the PDP currently controls. So, PDP is wining a minimum 25 states out of 36.”

Imobo-Tswam’s principal, Iyorchia Ayu, is currently locked in battle against, at least, five of the party’s 13 governors, including Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who spearheaded his (Ayu’s) emergence as chairman.

Gospel artiste, Mercy Chinwo sparked reactions on social media when a video of her performing at the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaign rally in Uyo surfaced online.

Chinwo serenaded thousands of supporters of the party at the flag-off of the party’s 2023 governorship campaigns in the Akwa-Ibom state capital.

The Port Harcourt-born songster, with her signature beret, mounted the colourfully decorated podium at exactly 01:12 pm for her performance.

Chinwo became the cynosure of all eyes as she thrilled supporters of the PDP rally with her mellifluous voice blended with the sweet rhythm of musical instruments to produce harmonious tunes.

For over 11 minutes, the 32-year-old dazzled Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel; his wife, Martha; and thousands of party loyalists in the state to gospel songs in local dialect and pidgin English.

Some of the songs she sang include ‘See the way you love me…’; ‘Jesus, you love me too much’, amongst others.

“Sister Mercy, this is electrifying,” the governor enthused in his speech after her ministration

In reactions, some tweeps questioned her involvement in politics, with many alluding she was there for the money.

Others leapt to her defense, asserting she was simply doing her job.

@Unkul_Obi: Mercy Chinwo don cash out from Akwa Ibom PDP ?. Election for Nigeria na money making period.

@88ideass: Mercy Chinwo performed at the PDP rally in Akwaibom as per rally of the ministers of God. Fraudsters everywhere parading as ministers. Ministers of their pocket.

Apparently, she’s paid with millions stolen from Akwaibom state coffers

@femcomnet2: She is an artist and that is her business. Performing there doesn’t necessarily mean she support them.

@BlissDecency: She is doing her job as a musician…

Controversial journalist, Kemi Olunloyo comes up with a different story as she hints at Davido’s son, Ifeanyi Adeleke being alive.

The 58-year-old disclosed that she recently received a call from a prominent Lagos Lawyer who told her that the toddler is still alive.

Kemi Olunloyo went on to assert that if this turns out to be true, Davido and Chioma should be promptly arrested for faking their child’s death.

Recall that news about Ifeanyi’s death broke out on Monday, 31st October. He was said to have drowned in the family swimming pool of Davido’s Banana Island residence, Lagos State.

In her words:

“#BREAKING A prominent Lagos Lawyer called me this afternoon to tell me Davido’s son #ifeanyiisalive. This clout hashtag has been TRENDING for a week. If it turns out this is true, Davido and Chioma should be PROMPTLY ARRESTED for faking their child’s DEATH and lying to Police.

In Journalism they trained us that we must always go to the source. However if it’s a death confirmation we go to police or a family spokesperson. The Adelekes with all their money have not hired a PR person in any capacity. This is a trying time for journalism ?
#KemifiedNG

The family needs a spokesman to address this. Who started #ifeanyiisalive hashtag? Did that nanny see the child lifeless? Not even Davido’s lawyer is a spokesman. They made police their spokesperson. Are they trying to end my coverage because that won’t work.

A nanny’s family is alleging torture. Many questions need answers??? Let’s keep watching THE INVESTIGATION PART.”

Taking to Facebook, she also wrote:

“IS IFEANYI ADELEKE ALIVE??❓❓❓
Heading to 29 yrs in journalism February 2023 and I have seen people fake deaths, but NEVER A CHILD in a social media era.

Ahead of the sentencing of Ramon Abbas, alias Hushpuppi, today, Monday, a United States court has received letters begging for mercy on behalf of the self-confessed international fraudster.

Prominent among the letters of passionate appeal for mercy for Hushpuppi are those of his wife, Regina Manneh, and two Imams who wrote separately from Lagos and Borno states in the Nigeria’s South-west and North-east regions, respectively.

The letter by the Imam of Imisi-Oluwa Mosque, Lagos, Rasaq Olopede, described Hushpuppi as “a frequent donator” to the mosque.

In another letter, Hudu Abdulrasak of Madrasatul Ahlul-Bait Islamiya, in Maiduguri, Borno State, also paid glowing tributes to Hushpuppi for his philanthropic gestures to the orphan, the widow and others in need.

They said the former Instagram celebrity, described by the US government as a proficient cyber-fraudster, had become remorseful and would be of good character after his release.

The addresses of the authors, including Hushpuppi’s wife, are redacted in the copies of the letters obtained by PREMIUM TIMES on Monday.

The letters were filed at the US District Court for the Central District of California on 4 November in support of Huspuppi’s earlier plea for light sentence.

Forty-year-old Hushpuppi had personally sent a hand-written letter to the judge, Otis Wright, giving assurances that he was a changed person, and promising to make full restitution in excess of the benefits he derived from the crimes, to the victims.

Charges, guilty plea, appeals for mercy

Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and flown to the United States in June 2020 to face charges of multi-million dollars fraudulent schemes including “bank cyber-heists”.

US authorities said Hushpuppi and his conspirators, through an extensive cyber-fraud, targeted multiple victims, including a bank in Malta, a law firm in New York, two companies in the United Kingdom, and a businessperson in Qatar.

Hushpuppi, who initially denied the charges, made a turnaround to enter into a plea bargain agreement with the US authorities in July 2021, in the hope of getting a light sentence.

He confessed to conspiring with multiple persons within and outside the US to launder the proceeds of the fraudulent scheme perpetrated against persons and businesses in different countries.

The offence ordinarily attracts a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, among other punishments including full restitution

The US government, in its pre-sentencing filings, pushed for at least 11 years jail term for him.

But, in his plea for leniency, Hushpuppi, without suggesting any number of years of jail term to the judge, pleaded for a sentence “to a term of imprisonment below the calculated range dictated by statute.”

The court has since received a flurry of letters addressed to the judge from Hushpuppi’s family and religious circles, also pleading for mercy on his behalf.

Wife’s plea for mercy

In her undated letter pleading for mercy on behalf of her husband, Regina Manneh, who is the mother of Hushpuppi’s youngest child, said his absence from home had left a void in the family.

Ms Manneh is believed to have lived with Hushpuppi and their son, Raymond, in Dubai. Hushpuppi’s two older children lives with their separate mothers in the US and the United Kingdom (UK).

RAMON OLORUNWA ABBAS, aka “Ray Hushpuppi

Ms Manneh said she and her four-year-old son were on a visit to see relatives in Sweden when Hushpuppi was arrested in June 2020.

“When I heard about his arrest, my son and I were in Sweden visiting family. Unfortunately, there was a lockdown due to Covid and before we got back to Dubai, he was already extradited to the USA so there was no chance for Raymond to see his father,” she wrote.

In her impassioned letter which is suspected to have been sent to the judge in October, she described Hushpuppi as “a very active father” with whom his son spent a lot of time going out and doing activities, including watching movies.

Hushpuppi’s incarceration, she said, “has had a huge impact on us as a family but mostly on our 4year-old son.”

Ms Manneh, who said she had been heart-broken by the turn of events, noted that Raymond “constantly asks for his father’s whereabouts.”

“As a mother, this breaks my heart for my son because he is at an age where he is aware of things and that his father is not with him physically.”

She said whenever Raymond had the opportunity to video call his father, “he constantly asks his father if he is on the way”.

“Usually after the call ends, Raymond gets emotional and just hugs me. And all I can do is offer emotional support to my son that is struggling to navigate his feelings during these hard times,” the mother said.

She said her plea for mercy for Hushpuppi was not just for herself, but “for my son and his family”.

She said Hushpuppi’s whole family depended on him financially and emotionally.

“Not having Ramon here has left a void in Raymond which saddens me,” she said.

She said she had had to start working overtime “in order to be able to pay for our child’s private school fees and his needs which has been a challenging task.”

RAMON OLORUNWA ABBAS, aka “Ray Hushpuppi,” aka “Hush,”
RAMON OLORUNWA ABBAS, aka “Ray Hushpuppi,” aka “Hush,”

“Ramon is a man that loves his family and would do anything for them. He is not perfect, but he is a good man that has made mistakes and he has taken responsibility. I beg this court to have mercy on him not only for me but for his children,” she wrote.

Imams’ pleas

Two Islamic clerics in their separate letters painted a portrait of Hushpuppi as a kind, loving, and generous man, whose criminal conduct alleged in the charges levelled against him, came to them as a rude shock.

Mr Olopede of Madrasat Ridwanu L’Hai-L-Arobiyat Wal Islamiyat, Imisi-Oluwa Mosque, said in his 8 October letter that he had known Hushpuppi for 15 years as a frequent donator to the mosque.

In his separate letter dated 4 October, Mr Abdulrasak of the Madrasatul Ahlul-Basit Islamiya, in Maiduguri Borno State, described Hushpuppi as a true philanthropist, although the cleric did not indicate how long he had known him.

Hushpuppi, a Muslim, was born and raised in Lagos before his sojourn to Malaysia and then to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirate (UAE), where he was arrested and flown to the US in June 2020.

His possible connection to the Lagos mosque is therefore understandable.

But his account of his personal history detailed in his court filings gave no hint of how he might have been connected to the Maiduguri community, in Borno State.

Yet, Mr Abdulrasak said Hushpuppi was known to his congregation in Maiduguri as a man that had lent “hands of assistance to many in our community”.

Among Hushpuppi’s philanthropic gestures, according to the cleric, included provision of borehole and water well, payment of school fees, feeding programmes, and rendering assistance to the needy, widows and orphans “on several occasions”.

“We hereby plead and pray to your honour to kindly put the above stated into consideration when tempering justice,” he wrote.

Also attesting to Hushpupi’s kind-heartedness that he was known for in the Lagos mosque, Mr Olopede said the defendant “made himself a willing and available example of hard work and humility for teenagers in his immediate neighbourhood”.

He said the defendant provided leadership and mentorship to friends and older adults alike, even as he sought direction for his own life.

“Ramon would usually contribute his part to anything that concerns the mosque, he would offer financial support at every given time when the mosque was holding events,” the cleric wrote.

He said Hushpuppi had at different times, donated to the mosque and bought a generator for the mosque.

He added that Hushpuppi’s involvement in criminal activities “came as a rude shock.”

“It was surprising that a promising young individual with a tremendous attitude towards work could be doing anything shady,” he added.

The cleric said he understood “the enormity of the crime” Hushpuppi committed, but called on the judge “to evoke the emotional part of you and beg that you temper justice with mercy.”

He noted that he had been informed of how Hushpuppi had been “cooperative and well-behaved” during this trial.

“I hope the remorse he has shown in the last years makes it a worthy recourse to getting a reduced sentence,” he added.
