AFCON official goes full 'celebrity referee' and has fans in hysterics on two occasions

Fans flocked to social media in hysterics after AFCON referee took centre stage during Nigeria's 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau. It's fair to say, he'd be popular in the Premier League!

An official at the Africa Cup of Nations has stolen the show after going full 'celebrity ref' during Nigeria's 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

Premier League officials have a history of trying to be the centre of attention.

Some pull strange faces, some brandish cards flamboyantly, others go absolutely mad in the stands when Tranmere Rovers win in the play-offs - and in the case of Mike Dean, they do all three.

And why not? After all, who doesn't love the spotlight?

Well it appears Kenyan referee Peter Waweru does - either that or he's been studying the Dean Machine's playbook closely.

He first caught the eye after legging it from one side of the pitch to the other as Guinea-Bissau mounted a counter-attack.

Fans flocked to social media in hysterics after watching him pump his arms and legs directly upwards, almost as if he thought he were wearing skis.

"Get those knees up lad," one fan tweeted.

"He has Mike Dean posters over all his bedroom," wrote another.

It got even better a few minutes later when Waweru blew for full-time.

The official raised one arm as he sounded the first whistle, raised the other as he sounded the second, and then put both arms in front of him and struck a pose on the third in a sequence that wouldn't have looked out of place in an Estonian Eurovision entry.
