Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, also known as DJ Cuppy, a popular disc jockey and daughter of Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola, has made history as the first Nigerian to host an opening session at the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.
Cuppy moderated the Youth Action Day at the 2024, UNGA, themed “The Summit of the Future – Youth Actions Day.”
Cuppy also delivered a musical performance after her keynote session.
Her session became the largest youth gathering in UN Headquarters history.

Civil society organisation, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa), has accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition party in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) of offering between N5,000 to N10,000 in exchange for votes during the Saturday’s governorship election that held in the state.
CDD in its preliminary statement from its Election Analysis Centre (EAC) on the Edo governorship poll expressed concern that there were extensive incidents of electoral offences carried out during the elections, which questioned the integrity of the electoral process.
CDD-EAC, in a statement signed by its chairman, Professor Adele Jinadu, said while 88% of its observers noted that there were no campaigns near to or at the polling unit, those who reported electoral offences highlighted extensive vote trading and officials failing to carry out any corrective action.
According to CDD-EAC, in Edo Central, incidents of vote buying were observed in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Ward 10, Polling Unit 014, Esan Central, Ward 5, Unit 4 at Eguare Primary School, and Esan North East, Ward 5, Uromi, involving both APC and PDP.
“It was observed that the APC and PDP offered between N5,000 to N10,000 in exchange for votes. The same was observed in Esan West LGA, Ward 6 Central Primary School Iruekpen Ekpoma, PU: 004. Observers reported that this practice contributed to an increase in voter turnout as news of the financial incentives spread among the electorate. At Ward 5, Polling unit 4- Awo Primary School, account numbers of voters were collated after voting for a particular party.
“In Edo South, incidents of vote buying were also reported at Oredo Local Government Area, Ward 12, Ibiwe/Iwegie/Ugbague at Ibiwe I, Oba Market, where PDP and Labour Party (LP) officials were particularly identified as having tried to induce voters. Of note was the attempt by some agents to engage with voters who spoke in Hausa in an attempt to engage the Hausa community in the area.
“On a positive note, at approximately 10 am, suspected vote-buyers were apprehended in the Egor Local Government Area of the state. Officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) subsequently removed the three individuals, two males and one female from the scene.
“However, some local residents protested the arrests, claiming the suspects were being unfairly targeted. This led to a brief confrontation between the EFCC operatives and residents who attempted to obstruct the removal of the suspects,” the statement reads in parts.
CDD-EAC’s observers reported that in 42% of the locations where it deployed its observers, INEC officials did not arrive on time, an instance at the Emotan College (PUs 12/12/04/001 to 005) where officials arrived very late, with none of the polling units operational by 9:45am.
The report also raised concern over possible overcrowding of polling units, with 65% of the observers noting that the polling units they observed had between 501 – 1,000 registered voters which made poll officials in these polling units overwhelmed.
CDD-EAC also noted with concern, that there were reports of voters not understanding where they were set to vote, especially in venues with multiple polling units such as Emotan College (PU 12/12/04-001 to 005) where several voters had to be redirected to different polling units.
“CDD-EAC notes heartily that 94% of our observers reported the presence of BVAS machines and 92% said that the machine showed 000 to indicate that no figures had been preloaded into the BVAS before accreditation.
“Although there were initial glitches in some observed polling units, when voting commenced, the process was reported by observers to have gone on smoothly and seamlessly. In unit 234, Obe primary school Fuga, Etsako Central, the BVAS was not displayed at all by the Presiding Officer.
“Attitude of Security Personnel CDD-EAC observation indicates that the conduct of the process has been largely peaceful, with no reports of any widespread incidents of violence. CDD-EAC commends some of the key players who have acknowledged the peaceful conduct of the process.
“However, on the police declared plan to deploy 3 personnel to 65 voters, it was observed that this target was not met. In PU 036, Ibewe Isan of Oredo LGA, about 1,500 voters were catered for by only 3 police personnel. While the police were reported to be friendly, the military personnel were said to be very hostile, even to observers.
“CDD commends voters in Edo for the calm and peaceful manner in which they have conducted all through this process so far. We similarly commend some political stakeholders who have acknowledged the peaceful nature of the electoral protest, just as we urge them to continue to promote peace and adherence to the rule of law and due process as the election, collation and declaration of results heads to the point of conclusion,” the statement added.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested nine suspects over alleged vote buying and possession of pre-filled ballot papers during the governorship election in Edo state.
In a statement on Saturday, Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, said six suspects were arrested at Aibotse Secondary School, beside Meremu Hotel in the Auchi area of Edo state, for engaging in vote buying.
Adejobi noted that the suspects were found with “a large sum of money, a cache of weapons, and a detailed plan outlining strategies for voter intimidation”.
“The well-coordinated effort led to the arrest of two key suspects, who are members of the PDP, Emotingham Godspower (25) and Farawei Isaac (27), both from Ufunama community, Ovia South West LGA, Edo state,” the statement reads.
“The suspects, connected to a larger network involving one “Atiku” and a kingpin known as “the boss”, were apprehended at So Cash guest house in Ekpoma, where a substantial amount of cash and incriminating items were recovered.
“Furthermore, six suspects namely Suleiman Abdurahim, Fatima Yakubu, Yusuf Aminat, 52 years, Salihu Lukman, 54 years, Safianu Saratu, 32years were all arrested at Aibotse Secondary School, beside Meremu Hotel, Auchi, for engaging in vote buying.
“This group was found with a large sum of money, a cache of weapons, and a detailed plan outlining strategies for voter intimidation.
“A fake journalist who claims to be a staff member of one of the leading television stations in Nigeria was also apprehended, further highlighting the extent of the criminal network.”
Earlier, the NPF announced that its operatives arrested two suspected political thugs and seized firearms during overnight raids ahead of the election.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has rubbished the conduct of today’s Local Government election in the state, alleging irregularities.
The party claimed that the election was a premeditated deceit, asserting that the Imo Council poll were done in the premises of hotels and the offices of the Sole Administrators of the 27 local government areas.
Addressing journalists in Owerri, the state capital, the state’s PDP chairman, Austine Nwachukwu, said: “We have today witnessed the murder of democracy. The purported local government elections in Imo State today, September 21, 2024, is nothing but a show of shame, an organized fraud, and an unprecedented rape of democracy.
“We can boldly tell that there was no election anywhere in the State today. As of 4 pm on a supposed election day, Imo people witnessed with grief the absence of sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials at virtually all the polling units across the entire State, even as electoral officers were not sighted anywhere near voting centers.
“Frustrated and disappointed, voters who had waited so long to cast their ballots to no avail retired to their respective homes. In a rather shocking development, the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) instead delivered the sensitive electoral materials to APC leaders and cronies at various LGAs.
“Recall that four days ago, the PDP in Imo State had raised alarm over a plot by the APC administration to rig the election, with ISIEC criminally flouting the electoral act and its own guidelines.”
It is worth noting that until today, the day of the election, the ISIEC failed to disclose the names of the candidates for the election, nor did the commission make the voter register available at the polling stations as mandated by the law.
There was no dialogue or gathering with political parties, candidates, and other interested parties concerning the election. This represents the pinnacle of their illegality.
“Also, just a day before the election, no one knew who the ISIEC electoral officers were and how the ad-hoc staff were selected. The commission never advertised applications for its ad-hoc roles. This is dubious and undemocratic. The anti-people manner in which the Hope Uzodimma administration has gone about the local government elections is clear proof that the government has totally failed the people and performed abysmally in all aspects of governance. If not why are they scared of the ballot? A government in touch with the people will not be scared of them. They are a disgrace to democratic governance,” Nwachukwu said.
Toyosi Adesanya, the actress famous in the Yoruba film industry, has opened up about her struggle with pregnancy losses and infertility.
The actress, in an interview with Talk To B, disclosed that her challenges began in 2007 when she lost her first pregnancy shortly after her wedding.
The film star recalled having a disturbing dream where she saw blood, which turned out to be a reality when she woke up. Her then-husband attributed the loss to stress.
Determined to conceive again, Adesanya said she sought help from a traditional healer in 2008, courtesy of her colleague Fathia Balogun. Unfortunately, she lost her second pregnancy.
Undeterred, the actress said she underwent laparoscopy and two failed IVF attempts in 2009 and 2011. She narrated how she sold her valuables to afford the procedures, which cost N900,000 – N1 million at the time.
“I got married in 2007 and I was already pregnant during our wedding ceremony,” she said.
“Two months after we travelled back to Akure where my husband stays, I saw blood in my dream and also when I woke up. I told my husband (now ex), and he said I might have lost the pregnancy due to stress.
“Meanwhile, I have not gone to any location, the one I had to go to was till December 2007 and I already lost the pregnancy in September 2007.
“In 2008, Fathia Balogun encouraged me to try for pregnancy again and introduced me to a woman.
“I went to the woman, she gave me some herbal medications and I got pregnant again. After a while, I lost the pregnancy.
“Then, I went to do laparoscopy and that is how I started the journey of trying to give birth.
“In 2009, I tried IVF but it failed. Then IVF cost N900,000 to N1 million so I sold all I owned, including my gold, to do the IVF but it failed.
“I tried IVF again in 2011 and that failed as well so I stopped and started waiting on God.”
Adesanya said she became pregnant again in 2019 but faced a threatened abortion.
The actress said her doctor advised her to terminate the pregnancy. She said this was after a disturbing dream where people with knives threatened to abort her pregnancy.
“… In January 2019, I got pregnant again but I did not tell my husband (now ex). Then I had a dream where some people with knives were saying they would abort my pregnancy,” she added.
“So, I called my pastor. He prayed for me and told me to leave the house I was staying in Akure.
“Then someone introduced me to a doctor in Lagos. When I got to the doctor, he confirmed I was pregnant but told me I had threatened abortion.
“He admitted me for two days but later advised me to evacuate the pregnancy.
“…After leaving my husband due to our marital issues, I got into a new relationship. And in 2022, I got pregnant again but lost it. After that, my doctor advised me so for now, I have forgone pregnancy.”

Olivia Ijeoma Chukwuemeka, the Abuja hotel victim, has recounted her harrowing experience in the hands of Joseph Efe, a suspected ritualist.
A viral video recently circulated on social media showed Olivia bound and undressed. In the footage, the suspect is seen unwrapping the victim, who is already partially covered in cellophane.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT command announced Efe’s arrest on Friday.
While parading Efe, the NSCDC revealed that the 30-year-old suspect specialises in luring women through a dating site known as ‘Coded Runs’ to rob them of their valuables.
During his confession, Efe admitted to meeting Chukwuemeka through the site before inviting her to the hotel.
Narrating her ordeal, Olivia said she resides in Enugu but frequently visits Abuja for “business” — although she did not state the nature of it.
“I met the suspect some months ago. I live in Enugu but visit Abuja for other business reasons,” she said.
She detailed how Efe allegedly assaulted her when she tried to resist.
“He said if I cooperate with him he will not hurt me like other girls. He said his friend was outside and if I made any wrong move, he injected me with something,” she said.
“I pleaded with him, he slapped me and asked me to strip my clothes. I tried to get to the door but it was locked by him and he held the keys.”
“He used my dress to tie my hands, but when it wasn’t tight enough, he switched to cellophane tape. He then turned up the television volume and gagged me with a handkerchief.”
She claimed Efe stole her phone and forced her to unlock it using her thumbprint before demanding her bank details.
She alleged that when he discovered her account was empty, he threatened her to stay silent and left the room.
She added that she alerted the hotel staff member after some time who she led to the direction where Efe had gone.
“I struggled and dragged myself to the window and banged it hard. Luckily, the guy heard me and I made a sign pointing in the direction the suspect went,” she added.
Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command has since requested the NSCDC to hand over Efe for further investigation.
A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR), has observed voter inducement at polling units (PUs) in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
“Situation Room observers reported widespread instances of blatant vote buying and selling across several polling units, despite the huge presence of security personnel,” the group said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.
The statement was co-signed by Yunusa Z. Ya’u, Mimidoo Achakpa and Franklin Oloniju.
“The price of votes ranged from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000 per voter in several locations, including PU08 and 09 Ward 2, Owan-East LGA; PU 02 Ward 2, Etsako-West LGA; and several polling units in Egor, Oredo and Owan-West LGAs.
“In some cases, voters were also induced with food items such as bread,” the group said.
The group, however, acknowledged the arrest of the alleged two vote traders in George Idah Primary School, Ward 2, Oredo Local Government Area.
The Situation Room commended the peaceful conduct of voters and urged them to remain calm throughout the process.
The Situation Room is made up of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) including Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), CLEEN Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa), YIAGA Africa, are TAF Africa.

Yiaga Africa has reported that the ongoing off-cycle governorship election in Edo State experienced instances of vote buying.
Their Process and Results Verification for Transparency (PRVT) methodology and Watching the Vote (WTV) initiative indicated that some voters were offered N10,000.
This is contained in the mid-day election statement on the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election presented on Friday by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi and Samson Itodo, Chair of the 2024 Edo Election Mission and Executive Director, of Yiaga Africa respectively as well as other board members including Prof. Nnamdi Aduba, Ezenwa Nwagwu, Cynthia Mbamalu and Dr. Asmau Maikudi.
“Observers reported incidents of vote buying in Ikpoba/Okha, Igueben, Esan West, Akoko Edo, Owan West and Uhunmode LGAs. APC and PDP party agents were seen bribing voters with cash (N10,000) at the Igueben-Idumoka Primary School polling unit (12-10-03-004) Ward 1 in Igueben LGA.
“Party agents for APC and PDP were also seen handing out cash gifts (N10,000) in Enikaro- Enikaro Primary School IX Polling Unit (12-11-07-009) in Ugbekun ward, Ikpoba/Okha LGA,” the statement said.
The Yiaga Africa commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and security agencies for their swift action in arresting suspected vote-buyers at polling units in Egor and Oredo LGAs.
The statement said that as of 1:40 pm, the Yiaga Africa WTV Data Centre received 16 verified critical incident reports primarily relating to the late opening of polls; four PUs that failed to open as reported in two PUs in Egor, one in Esan South East, and one in Etsako West.
It also listed delayed commencement of voting due to BVAS Malfunction in Ayogwiri Town Hall, Ayogwiri PU, of Uzairure South East ward in Etsako West LGA, adding that as of 1pm, voting had not commenced in the PU.
On disruption of voting, the statement said that voters halted the accreditation and voting process in the Ikpoba -Army Children XI polling unit (12-11-01-011) in Iwogban/Uteh Ward, Ikpoba/Okha LGA because INEC officials arrived without the official stamp.
While at Ebua Market Square in Uhunwode LGA, an altercation between APC and PDP supporters over alleged bribery led to the suspension of voting and the destruction of the voting cubicle, political thugs disrupted voting at Anyaran Araromi Primary School in Akoko Edo LGA.
The statement among other recommendations urged security agencies to enhance their presence in PUs and wards where delays occurred due to the late arrival of INEC officials to prevent political thugs from exploiting the situation to compromise the process, especially if the process extends into the night.
An attempt by a 59-year-old man to commit suicide on the Third Mainland Bridge has been foiled by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command has foiled
The spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed this in a statement said the man identified simply as Yemi, attempted to jump into the lagoon from the bridge on Friday, September 20, 2024.
According to the PPRO, the man said he was overwhelmed by challenges.
“At about 1200hrs today, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) bike riders on routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon. The man, one Yemi, aged 59 of Ilasa, Lagos stated that he was overwhelmed by challenges,” the PPRO stated.
“Commander RRS, CSP Shola Jejeloye has counselled the suspect and has directed he be kept in protective custody pending the arrival of his family members.”

Barrister Asue Ighodalo, the Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has raised the alarm over alleged voting buying in the ongoing election in the state.
Daily Post reports that Ighodalo made the allegation shortly after casting his vote at ward 1, unit 3, at Okaigben Idinrio in Esan South-East LGA.
He alleged that some political parties are buying votes with N15,000 and B20,000.
“The worst is that they go round trying to buy votes. They buy votes for N15,000 and N20,000.They are trying everything to subvert the process,” he said.
Ighodalo, who expressed optimism that he will win the election, noted that his major priority is to move the state forward.
“We are not comfortable with the little shenanigans that is going on particularly from the APC guys.
“There are rumours that they are trying to undermine the election process. Many of them have been caught with ballot papers, PVC’s.
“The Nigerian military has made me proud. They have taken charge and have shown great responsibility. They have shown that they can protect the people and I am extremely proud.
“We are not worried. We have spent ten months talking to people, telling them what we will do for them if they elect us.
“The people believed us and have accepted us all over the state. I don’t know the magic anybody will perform.
“I believe INEC will deliver a free and fair election until they prove otherwise. We will win hands down in this election,” Ighodalo added.
He also alleged that some chieftains of the PDP were arrested in Uromi.
“We are not happy with what is ongoing on in some places but we will remain confident. One of our supporters was arrested at Uromi by some people with security outfit.
“No one should carry a gun into a polling unit. It’s against the law. It’s against the regulation. You see people behave indiscriminately, oppressing and trying to intimidate our folks. It won’t happen. We can’t be intimidated.
“How come it’s only PDP supporters that have been arrested? Everyday you see APC supporters doing imaginable things. But nobody arrests them. Nobody investigates them.
“The person arrested was at his polling unit trying to be accredited. He was queuing up trying to be accredited. Authorities should create a free and fair playing field. This is getting too much, particularly from the Police Force,” he added.

Davido, the Afrobeats star, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of “incompetence” in the ongoing gubernatorial elections in Edo.
On Saturday, residents went to the polls to elect a successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is completing his two-term tenure of eight years.
Seventeen political parties are participating in the election, with the major contenders being the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party (LP).
The key candidates include Monday Okpebholo (APC), Asue Ighodalo (PDP), and Olumide Akpata (LP).
During the election, there were reports of vote-buying and the presence of political thugs at some polling units.
Ighodalo also accused the police of voter intimidation.
“One of our supporters was arrested by men in mufti carrying guns. Nobody should carry a gun to a polling unit; that’s against the law and regulation,” he said.
Davido, who recently expressed enthusiasm for the election and supported Ighodalo, criticised INEC, labeling it “the most dangerous institution in Nigeria” and “very incompetent”.
He also urged the commission to enhance its operations, adding that the world is watching the unfolding events in the state.

The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has won his polling unit.
Obaseki had after casting his vote said commended the electoral process at his polling unit. He commended voters who came out to vote despite the heavy rain experienced in the state.
His words: “You can see despite the inclement weather people have turned out in their large numbers. You can see the enthusiasm.
“It is not mid-day yet and the ballot box in my polling unit is already full. And so clearly that tells you that people are very interested because they have been mobilized. And have been very interested in this election. This is why I am not surprised.
“For now I am glad with what I see, the process in my units has been smooth. I hope the collation process will be the same. It will be peaceful and the results will be counted and there will be no destruction.
“I am glad with the extent of military presence in the state. As you know the federal security agencies have taken over the state. I am not the Chief Security Officer of the state, the Inspector General of Police, IGP is the Chief Security Officer”.
On the other hand, the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Olumide Akpata has lost his polling unit.
He pulled 32 votes against PDP that got 41. At polling unit PU11, Ward 06, Oredo LGA, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Monday Okpebholo, garnered 19.
Recall that Akpata had advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that what he experienced at his polling unit was replicated all over the state and allow the peoples’ vote to count.
According to him “The process went well, I want to hope that this is the experience of every Edo voter, but I’m not going to make that assumption standing here, I want to wait for feedback from my agents across the state, its 192 wards, 4500 polling units.
“We are hopeful that this will be the experience of every Edo voter and I am calling on INEC that the playing field should remain level, nobody should be given any undue advantage, all of our agents should be allowed into collation centres, the agent of all parties, nobody should be hindered, prevented from going into the collation centre, so that we can all witness the process, and be able to confirm that it was done in the manner as provided by law, the electoral act and the constitution.
“So, INEC has no excuse, this is an off-cycle, and they have the luxury to deploy their resources.
“All eyes are on INEC, the entire country is on INEC, and we are hoping that they will do a good job.
“It left to see if the heavy deployment of security personnel to Edo is for the people or the certain individual”.
