Following the June 12, Democracy Day speech by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigerians have reacted on social media.
President Tinubu Monday poured encomiums on Moshood Abiola, the winner of the annulled 12 June 1993 presidential election.
Tinubu praised the late Abiola for not surrendering his mandate which eventually led to his death in military detention.
He said the country’s most viable system of administration, democracy, should be valued and protected, while also advising Nigerians not to take for granted the freedom they currently enjoy because it was won after great struggle.
He also assured the populace that his administration will meticulously carry out every provision of the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which was part of their electoral contract.
“A people can never truly appreciate the freedoms and rights democracy guarantees them until they lose it, we shall be faithful to the truth, faithful to equity and faithful to justice.”

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has reacted after his second babymama, Keji, publicly apologized to him over alleged cheating.
This comes a few days after Portable welcomed his 6th child with an upcoming Yoruba Nollywood actress, Ashabi.
Recall that a few months ago, Portable leaked chats of his baby mama with another man on social media alleging she was cheating on him despite providing everything for her.
However, Keji has made a U-turn as she took to her Instagram page to pen an emotional note to the ‘Zazoo’ crooner, expressing her decision to spend a lifetime with him.
She also shared a photo of Portable, expressing love for him, noting that her life has been better since the day she met him.
Keji further expressed appreciation to the singer for his contributions to their son, adding she is back to him.
She wrote: “I would rather spend one moment holding you than a lifetime knowing I never could.
“I love you and I will always do because my life has been better since the Dey I met you. love you wholeheartedly mine and thanks for all you do okikiola. am back to you baby.”
Reacting, Portable acknowledged the post and reshared it on his Instagram page without any caption.
Ibadan-based chef, Temitope Adebayo has announced plans to undertake a 140-hour cook-a-thon.
The chef is looking to overtake Chef Hilda Baci who recently completed a 100-hour cook-a-thon and Chef Dammy currently on course to achieve her set 120-hour cook-a-thon target.
The chef went on to share screenshots of his registration to the Guinness World Record and a screenshot of the verification email he had received.
It could be seen, from the screenshots, that his 140-hours cook-a-thon was slated for the 1st of November 2023 at Ibadan, Oyo state.
Tina Hines suffered a nearly fatal heart attack. She was effectively dead for 27 minutes and claims she saw Jesus during that time.
In February 2018, Hines was getting ready to go hiking. Instead, she suffered a heart attack, and her husband Brian jumped to the rescue. He called the ambulance, but it appeared that Tina’s faith was sealed.
The woman from Phoenix was revived six times and spent almost half an hour effectively dead. That’s when she saw the afterlife.
When she finally woke up, she asked for a pen and paper. Her husband recalls, “She just started making marks, and I couldn’t tell what it was, and I was almost shaking. I was fixed. I just held the book steady because I didn’t want it to drop.
He added, “We figured out that she wrote I-T-S-R-E-A-L. ‘What’s it’s real?’ And I go, ‘The pain? The hospital?’… Eyes are closed. She’s fully vented. She’s moving all this. No, and then my daughter goes, ‘Heaven?’ And she goes – she nods yes.”
Tina spoke about the experience, “I just wanted to share that I saw Jesus face to face, and the unbelievable rest and peacefulness of what I was experiencing was Jesus standing there with his arms open wide, and right behind Jesus standing there was this incredible glow it was the most vibrant and beautiful yellow.”
She confidently claims, “Jesus is real. Heaven is real.”
Tina Hines’s niece, Madie Johnson, said, “Her story is too real not to share and has given me a stronger confidence in a faith that so often goes unseen.”
The near-death experiences are rare but not that uncommon. The University of Virginia described it as “intensely vivid and often life-transforming experiences, many of which occur under extreme physiological conditions such as trauma, ceasing of brain activity, deep general anesthesia or cardiac arrest in which no awareness or sensory experiences of any kind should be possible according to the prevailing views in neuroscience.”
NDE or near-death experiences are often life-changing. In 2008, Eben Alexander was induced into a coma. He said he experienced “rebirth” in another reality, with “‘waterfalls flow[ing] into crystal pools” and people dancing.
Betty J. Eadie saw a figure telling her, “It’s not yet your time.”
It was also suggested that people have a flashback of their lives before they die. Ajmal Zemmar speculated if the brain did a flashback, “it would probably like to remind you of good things rather than the bad things.”
He concluded: “I think there’s something mystical and spiritual about this whole near-death experience.”

Why do we watch movies?
There are so many answers to this decade-old question. While entertainment suffices as a standard and good response, for some viewers, it’s a way through which they feel seen and are assured of the hope that no matter what challenges life throws in their way, things will get better.
Through hopeful and compelling storytelling, Biodun Sephen’s Sista deviates from a typical Nollywood film.
Although the storyline of Sista is not new on-screen as we have watched movies about a woman who gets pregnant at a young age, is forced to give up on her dreams, gets jilted by the baby’s father, raises the kids on her own, and later meets the absent father who already has a family, there is something about Sista that keeps a viewer interested in the sequence of events.
From the exciting dialogues to Kehinde Bankole’s performance, Sista joins the Nollywood hidden gems that must-watch.
The Tea (Plot)
As is increasingly common with Nollywood films, we are introduced with a flashback. We see a girl drop a pregnancy bombshell on her boyfriend. They are both confused about what to do and upon informing their guardians, they are sent away from home.
In the present, we are made to know that the girl we saw earlier is our main character, Sista. She is now a cleaner.
The film alternates between two timelines. It is revealed through flashback that after Sista and her boyfriend, Fola, are sent out of the house, they move into Fola’s hostel to enable him to further his education. Problems arise between Sista and Fola, mainly due to Fola’s laziness and inability to be compassionate. These problems cause Afolabi to abandon Sista and his two kids, hoping for a better life.
With all that hurt, Sista promises to give her kids the best life, so she works hard. Everything went smoothly until she got a cleaning job in a rich man’s house.
It turns out that the man is Fola, married to Tiwalope. They both recognise each other but choose not to confront each other.
Out of guilt, Fola confesses to Tiwalope, who tries to reconcile both parties. Based on the pleas of her children, Sista gives in.
However, things take an aggressive turn when Fola starts showering the children with luxury items, going so far as to secure their admission into universities abroad. This angers Sista as she berates the children for readily accepting back the man who abandoned her and planning to leave her after being their sole provider through the years.
Long story short, Afolabi and Sista are forced to make a life-changing decision.
The Good
When Nollywood films are criticised, it’s often for thinking small about their storylines. Sista is an expectation, as its simplicity makes the movie watchable. If Sista had added any more narration, it might have taken away from the beauty of the film.
As mentioned, the storyline has been done before, even in old Nollywood. However, what makes Sista different is that it focuses on objectively telling the story and weirdly providing a happy ending to the parties involved.
The Biodun Stephen-directed film also boosts good Biodun, as it was remarkable watching Sista grow from a semi-educated woman coping with betrayal to letting go of the hurt.
The acting performances are included, as Kehinde Bankole deserves accolades. She proved to possess the range many actors lack nowadays. The switch to a heartbroken mother is remarkable. Bisola Aiyeola raises the petition for her to hold an acting masterclass or at least an accent class. She shines brightly as Tiwalope, allowing viewers to root for her.
Lastly, Sista resonates with viewers mainly due to its exploration of abandonment in the family. It’s a film that would make a viewer feel seen and celebrate the efforts of single mothers.
The Bad
Sista’s dialogues are impressive but cringy and Westernised. The kids’ dialogue felt like what an American kid would say compared to characters in between poor and rich.
The plot got dragged out a lot. The producers could have skipped the unnecessary details in Sista’s life, like the scene where she got accused of stealing, as it contributed nothing to the movie. They could have just focused on pushing events in the first half faster to give viewers more opportunities to watch the interaction between Sista and Afolabi.
Some things could have been improved in the acting performances of a few characters. Much could have been done to make the audience root for those characters.
Final Verdict
8/10. Sista is a good educational film that might bring you to tears.
Four children have been found alive after surviving a plane crash and spending weeks fending for themselves in Colombia’s Amazon jungle.
Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro said the rescue of the siblings, aged thirteen, nine, four and one, was “a joy for the whole country”.
He also stated that it is a “magical day, they were alone, they themselves achieved an example of total survival which will remain in history.”
It will be recalled that the children’s mother and two pilots were killed when their light aircraft crashed in the jungle on 1 May.
The missing children became the focus of a huge rescue operation involving dozens of soldiers and local people.
The children are from the indigenous Huitoto people.
Petro posted a picture of the siblings, who had been missing for 40 days, being cared for by a number of military personnel and Indigenous people. The smallest child was fed from a bottle by one of the rescuers, who also used a spoon to feed one of the other kids from a mug.
A video shared by Colombia’s Ministry of Defence showed the children being lifted into a helicopter in the dark above the tall trees of the jungle. They have been flown to the nation’s capital Bogota, where ambulances have taken them to the hospital for further medical treatment.
The children’s grandmother, Fatima Valencia, said after their rescue: “I am very grateful, and to mother earth as well, that they were set free.
“She gave them flour and cassava bread, any fruit in the bush, they know what they must consume,” she said.
She said the eldest of the four siblings was used to looking after the other three when their mother was at work, and that this helped them survive in the jungle.
The Cessna 206 plane that the kids and their mother were in when they were killed was en route from Araracuara, in the province of Amazonas, to San José del Guaviare when it made a mayday signal owing to an engine failure.
The soldiers discovered the death of the three adults at the accident site, but it appeared that the kids had fled the debris and were looking for assistance in the rainforest.
A massive search began and in May, rescuers recovered items left behind by the children, including a child’s drinking bottle, a pair of scissors, a hair tie and a makeshift shelter.
Small footprints were also discovered, which led search teams to believe the children were still alive in the rainforest, which is home to jaguars, snakes and other predators.
Members of the children’s community hoped that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills would give them a better chance of remaining alive.
Indigenous people joined the search and helicopters broadcast a message from the children’s grandmother, recorded in the Huitoto language, urging them to stop moving to make them easier to locate.

Media personality, Morayo Afolabi-Brown has opened up on her experience with Kwara-born industrialist, Prince Samuel Adedoyin, her first employer at the defunct City Express Bank.
Mrs Afolabi-Brown in an Instagram post on Friday said she began working with Adedoyin through his daughter Olori Olusola Adedoyin-Alao.
She wrote: “Chief Samuel Adedoyin was my first employer at City Express Bank through his daughter @olori_solaadedoyinalao,” she wrote.

The General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has revealed reasons the founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, can never be his friend.
Naija News reports that Apostle Suleman made this known during the Church’s Holy Ghost Conference 2023, live-streamed via YouTube.
Speaking during a sermon, Suleman shared his opinion about Pastor Chris, stressing he cannot equate himself with someone who had grown more than him spiritually.
He further explained that even though he respects Chris, he cannot be friends with him because they do not operate on the same level.
The controversial clergy gave some context for his opinion, with a recent conversation with Reverend John, who had just participated in a pastor’s classroom conference.
According to Apostle Suleman, Reverend John said over 103 million people had registered for the program online, and by the end of the meeting, over 110 million pastors had registered.
He expressed surprise at how Pastor Chris could hold such a large event, noting that he is way ahead of him.
He further described Pastor Chris as a field marshal who is in a class of his own, hence, they can never be friends.

The police authority in Malawi has apprehended a 27-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife after suspecting her of cheating on him.
The suspect, Mkwate Chimbizi, reportedly murdered his wife in the Ngabu area of Chikwawa, Malawi.
A statement credited to the South East Police Region spokesperson, Edward Kabango, allege that Chimbizi severed his wife’s breasts and private parts before beheading her.
The police officer’s statement made available in the public domain on Friday, June 9, 2023, said that Chimbizi suspected that his wife, Luwiza Leonard, 23, was having an extramarital affair.
Kabango said the suspect was arrested on Thursday, June 8, and led officers to a site where he buried the victim’s head, which had been found in a decomposed state.
The police spokesperson further alleged that Chimbizi threw his wife’s genitalia and breasts in a pit latrine. According to him, the couple had a heated argument which escalated into a fight.
The suspect then allegedly hit Luwiza on the head with a stone, killing her instantly. He then took a panga and cut off her head, breast and private parts.
Kabango said the incident occurred June 3, 2023, adding that a search for the victim’s body is underway.

Private school owners in Nigeria have expressed strong concern over the ripple effects of the recent fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on their costs of operations, saying the development may push them to jerk up their school fees.
The National President of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Yomi Otubela, raised this concern alongside other participants at a virtual dialogue organised on Thursday by the association on the topic: “Government Policies and Resultant Effects on Private School Administration: A Case Study on the Removal of Fuel Subsidy”.
According to participants, the cost of running private schools in the country even before the removal of fuel subsidies was very huge and becoming unbearable for many.
They said, “Now that fuel subsidy has been removed and the costs of goods and services including transportation and running generators and other educational needs have been on the rise, private schools may not have option than to increase tuition fees to remain in business.”
They said it is not that the action of government removing the subsidy is a bad idea but it would be advisable to also come up with palliative measures for a social-service sector as education and private schools in particular, as critical stakeholders in the education ecosystem, to cushion the effect of the action on their operations.
According to them, government would need to factor in their concerns in the ongoing negotiations with the labour unions and other critical stakeholders to lessen their own burden too as it is thinking about others.
They said private schools provide quality education for reasonable number of children in the country and parents are already burdened with financial pressure on many needs and would not want to add to their burden with tuition hike, again.
“So, it is required that government give special consideration and support to us in this critical time to grow and develop particularly because of our crucial role to human capital and national development.”
They said the only way to help private schools to minimise the impact of the subsidy removal now is for government to provide certain palliative measures for them.
They listed some of the palliatives to include provision of school buses on lease agreement, training of teachers on termly basis, giving of educational grants to teachers and administrators, establishment of educational banks to grant soft loans to teachers, school owners and parents and also giving of tax holiday for teachers and schools.
They said even though all these measures would not totally solve their challenges, they would go a long way for them to remain in business and thrive without them increasing their tuition.
They said the only thing is that, on their part, they would now be more prudent and adopt better financial management practices, explore alternative energy sources, and also engage in partnership with one another to pool resources and expertise.
On his part, the guest speaker at the forum, Mr Bismarck Rewane, a financial and economic expert, said of a truth, the costs of running private schools now that subsidy had been removed would certainly shoot up just as it is applicable for every other business.
He also said it would not be out of place for school owners to increase their tuition fees either now or later as one of the ways to mitigate the effect of the subsidy removal on their operations more so that government is not going back on the policy but that doing so would also have its own consequences on schools’ revenues and the country’s educational system.
He said some parents may not be able to pay as and when due again particularly if the increment is high and that may even lead to withdrawal of their children from school and may not bother to bring them back again to school.
He therefore urged them to seek certain educational palliatives from government such as giving scholarships to some students from indigent homes in their schools particularly at the basic level and ensure their money is paid upfront to enable them to meet certain needs and also ask for training of their teachers and so forth.
He added that on their part, they could explore more digital learning to complement classroom learning.
He said education is a catalyst for societal development and deserves adequate investment from all stakeholders including government.
He, however, commended NAPPS for putting up the forum, saying it would help them to equip with right knowledge to thrive amidst challenges.
