The Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered fresh setbacks on Wednesday as two members of the House of Representatives, Okolie Lawrence and Akingbaso Olanrewaju, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawrence, who represents Aniocha North/Aniocha South/Oshimili North/Oshimili South federal constituency of Delta State, dumped the LP, stating that his decision to join the APC would “bring governance closer” to his constituents.
Olanrewaju, representing Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency of Ondo State, left the PDP, citing a lingering internal crisis. He said he was aligning himself with the APC’s “ideology and renewed hope agenda” of President Bola Tinubu.
His defection drew a protest from Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, who raised a point of order, arguing that there was no crisis in the PDP. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas acknowledged the objection but continued with legislative business.
The latest defections are part of a growing trend in the House, where several lawmakers have recently abandoned opposition parties for the APC. The shift has further strengthened the ruling party’s influence in the lower chamber, raising concerns within opposition ranks.
…As youths destroy, burn his palatial house
The sleepy Umumba Ndiagu community in Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Tuesday, erupted in anger when the youths of the community alleged a member of the community, said to be a native doctor, known as Ichie Millions, also called Ezeani, who claimed to be a businessman, was using his vast compound for kidnapping and criminal activities.
They also alleged that it was discovered that the native doctor kills and buries people alive in his compound.
To search for the truth, the youths of the community invaded the compound and to their bewilderment, discovered that the native doctor, Ezeani, had soak away pits that were said to be filled with the dead bodies of human beings.
He allegedly kidnapped his victims, including pregnant women and children, and buried them alive for ritual purposes.
The discovery threw the community into shock and sadness prompting the youths to attack and burn his house.
A trending viral video was seen when the youths ransacked the houses in the compound, including what they said was his shrine.
The community was said to have discovered these dastardly acts after Ezeani was alleged to have been caught kidnapping a 13-year-old minor in his community.
This led to a probe of his activities, which further led to the unveiling of a can of worms in his palatial building, parked with exotic cars.
The community alleged that he was found to have buried several victims alive in a soak-away pit in his compound.
13-year-old victim’s story
“My father and I went to fetch firewood, which we will use to fry our garri. His men came and asked my dad for his cutlass, which he gave them. Suddenly, they grabbed me and kept me in a pit they had dug. I then started crying and the Neighborhood Watch operatives heard my cry and came to rescue me,” the little girl rescued from the hands of Ezeani recounted in a viral video.
Also, in another trending viral video, the voice of a shocked member of the community was heard equally recounting the horror.
“We have caught the killers. They kill people. People’s dead bodies are inside here. They have killed a lot of people. We just rescued a 13-year-old child, who they wanted to use for rituals.
“This is happening in Ojor’s house in Umumba Ndiagu, Ezeagu in Enugu State. This is one of them here,” referring to a suspect apprehended at the scene.
The community youths caught a man who claimed he was a security guard and was asked by the native doctor to guard the compound.
He was seen in the video, dumped on the compound, stripped naked, and tied hands and feet, while the youths went about burning and destroying all structures in the compound.
He, however, denied involvement in the killings but is said to have admitted frequenting the native doctor’s residence for ritual purposes.
The suspect who identified the native doctor as Ezeani explained during interrogation by the angry youths: “I am a business person and I came here. After I finished performing some sacrifices, it remained for a water sacrifice to be performed for me.
“I was waiting for everything to be done for me. There are things to be done but I don’t know what he used to do the things, but what they do here is that as a newcomer, they normally send the person on an errand.
“The owner of this place, Daddy Ezeani, asked me to protect this place and scare anyone coming here away.”
Ezeani is said to be currently on the run but it was gathered that his wives were also caught by the community members while his house and cars were all burnt down by the irate youths.
Police launch manhunt for fleeing native doctor
Meanwhile, the police commissioner, Bitrus Giwa, is said to have ordered for a manhunt for the fleeing native doctor.
In a statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police said: “Police operatives of the Enugu State Command, attached to the Umumba Division, in the early hours of May 27, 2025, at about 3:15 a.m., in collaboration with Neighbourhood Watch personnel and vigilant community members, successfully rescued a 13-year-old girl (name withheld), allegedly kidnapped for ritual murder, at Umuojor village in Ishiagu community of Ezeagu Local Government Area.
“The operation also led to the arrest of three male suspects connected to the crime, namely: Uche Kingsley Agumba, 33; Ilo Nweze Onyedikachi, 36 and Ejike Odinwankpa, 38. The prime suspect, identified as Levi Onyeka Obu nicknamed “Ezeani” and “E-Dey-Play-E-Dey-Show,” a native doctor and prominent member of the community, fled the scene and is currently at large.
“During the rescue, two decomposing bodies, one male and one female, were discovered buried in a concrete-sealed pit within an uncompleted building, owned and used as a shrine and heinous criminal activities by the fleeing prime suspect.
“Investigations reveal that the deceased victims were recently murdered and buried in the pit by the suspects for ritual purposes, and the rescued child was moments away from suffering the same fate before the timely intervention.
“In line with its laws, the Enugu State Government has demolished the buildings owned by the fleeing prime suspect and used for the criminal enterprise.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who promptly visited the crime scene, has commended the efforts of the police operatives, local security groups and community members, whose collaboration ensured the success of the operation.
He has also directed the Command’s Tactical Squads, as well as Investigation and Intelligence Units, to intensify efforts in tracking down the fleeing suspect and other accomplices still at large, with a firm resolve to ensure justice is served.”
President Bola Tinubu has outlined his achievements in office over the last two years, stating that he has not only improved security but also expanded the economy, with the country’s external reserves increasing by almost 500% from $4 billion in 2023 to over $23 billion by the end of 2024.
In a statement to celebrate his mid-term in office, the president also explained why his government removed fuel subsidies and devalued the naira.
The achievements claimed by Tinubu were, however, dismissed by opposition political parties, including Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,; Labour Party, LP; and Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, which described his government as the worst so far produced in the country.
Tinubu said: ”Two years ago, you entrusted me with the sacred responsibility to lead our nation at a time of historic challenges. Together, we have faced these headwinds with courage and determination
“The economic and general situation of the country I inherited required that we redirect the country’s affairs with a bold and new vision. I immediately implemented two necessary policies to stop our country from further drifting into the precipice.
“It was apparent that if the Federal Government and the other two tiers of government must remain viable and cater to the citizens’ welfare, we must do away with decades-long fuel subsidies and the corruption-ridden multiple foreign exchange windows. The two were no longer sustainable and have become a chokehold on our nation’s neck, strangling our nation’s future.
“While our administration has implemented reforms to restore and reinvigorate our national economy and strengthen our social fabric as a strong and united country, I must thank my fellow citizens for your unrelenting support and belief in the grand vision we share to uplift our nation and renew our collective hopes and aspirations.
‘’We are halfway through the journey that began 24 months ago. Today, May 29, 2025, offers our administration the opportunity to share again how far we have gone and our progress in steering our country along the critical path of socio-economic development.
‘’When we embarked on this journey, propelled by a burst of hope and abiding faith in Nigeria’s unity and progress, I made a pledge before God and fellow countrymen and women to confront Nigeria’s challenges head-on by rebuilding trust, fostering prosperity, and restoring our nation’s economic health.
“Today, I proudly affirm that our economic reforms are working. We are on course to building a greater, more economically stable nation.
“Under our Renewed Hope Agenda, our administration pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift our people out of poverty.
‘’While implementing the reforms necessary to strengthen our economy and deliver shared prosperity, we have remained honest by acknowledging some of the difficulties experienced by our compatriots and families. We do not take your patience for granted.
“I must restate that the only alternative to the reforms our administration initiated was a fiscal crisis that would have bred runaway inflation, external debt default, crippling fuel shortages, a plunging Naira, and an economy in a free-fall. Despite the bump in the cost of living, we have made undeniable progress.
“Inflation has begun to ease, with rice prices and other staples declining. The oil and gas sector is recovering; rig counts are up by over 400% in 2025 compared to 2021, and over $8 billion in new investments have been committed. We have stabilised our economy and are now better positioned for growth and prepared to withstand global shocks.
We’re on track
‘’In 2025, we remain on track with our fiscal targets. Gross proceeds per barrel from crude oil are broadly aligned with our forecasts as we intensify our efforts to ramp up production. Our fiscal deficit has narrowed sharply from 5.4% of GDP in 2023 to 3.0% in 2024.
“We achieved this through improved revenue generation and greater transparency in government finances. In the first quarter of this year, we recorded over N6 trillion in revenue.
“We have discontinued Ways and Means financing, which has been a major contributor to high and sticky inflation. The NNPC, no longer burdened by unsustainable fuel subsidies, is now a net contributor to the Federation Account. We are also achieving fuel supply security through local refining.
“Our debt position is improving. While foreign exchange revaluation pushed our debt-to-GDP ratio to around 53%, our debt service-to-revenue ratio dropped from nearly 100% in 2022 to under 40% by 2024. We paid off our IMF obligations and grew our net external reserves by almost 500% from $4 billion in 2023 to over $23 billion by the end of 2024.
‘’Thanks to our reforms, state revenue increased by over N6 trillion in 2024, ensuring that sub-national governments can reduce their debt burden, meet salaries and pension obligations on a timely basis, and invest more in critical infrastructure and human capital development.
“One of our administration’s most impactful achievements is our bold tax reform agenda, which is already yielding results. By the end of 2024, our tax-to-GDP ratio rose from 10% to over 13.5%, a remarkable leap in just one year.
“This was not by accident. It results from deliberate improvement in our tax administration and policies designed to make our tax system fairer, more efficient, and more growth-oriented.
‘’We are eliminating the burden of multiple taxation, making it easier for small businesses to grow and join the formal economy. The tax reforms will protect low-income households and support workers by expanding their disposable income. Essential goods and services such as food, education, and healthcare will now attract 0% VAT. Rent, public transportation, and renewable energy will be fully exempted from VAT to reduce household costs further.
‘’We are ending the era of wasteful and opaque tax waivers. Instead, we have introduced targeted and transparent incentives supporting high-impact manufacturing, technology, and agriculture sectors. These reforms are not just about revenue but about stimulating inclusive economic growth.
“There is a deliberate focus on our youth, who a friendlier tax environment for digital jobs and remote work will empower. Through export incentives, Nigerian businesses will be able to compete globally. Our National Single Window project streamlines international trade, reduces delays, and enhances Nigeria’s competitiveness.
‘’To promote fairness and accountability, we are establishing a Tax Ombudsman, an independent institution that will protect vulnerable taxpayers and ensure the system works for everyone, especially small businesses.
“Most importantly, we are laying the foundation for a more sustainable future by introducing a new national fiscal policy. This strategic framework will guide our approach to fair taxation, responsible borrowing, and disciplined spending.
“These reforms are designed to reduce the cost of living, promote economic justice, and build a business-friendly economy that attracts investment and supports every Nigerian. Together, we are creating a system where prosperity is shared, and no one is left behind.
‘’We have breathed new life into the solid minerals sector as part of our efforts to diversify the economy. Revenue has increased phenomenally, and investors are setting up processing plants as the sector dumps the old pit-to-port policy and embraces a new value-added policy. We have also repositioned our health sector despite all odds.
“Over 1,000 Primary Health Centres are being revitalised nationwide. An additional 5,500 PHCs are being upgraded under our Renewed Hope Health Agenda. We are establishing Six new cancer treatment centres.
“Three are ready. We offer free dialysis services in pilot tertiary hospitals and subsidise the service in others. Under the Presidential Maternal Health Initiative, over 4,000 women have undergone free cesarean sections. Lastly, we have expanded Health Insurance Coverage from 16 million to 20 million within two years.
Economy growing stronger
’As a result of our bold and deliberate policies, the economy is growing stronger again. Real GDP rose by 4.6% in Q4 2024, with full-year growth of 3.4%. This is one of the strongest in a decade.
“Without a responsive and reliable national security infrastructure that can protect lives and properties, our economy will not perform optimally, and those who seek to harm us will impair and disrupt our way of life. Our administration is committed to the security and safety of our people. For our government, protecting our people and their peaceful way of life is the utmost priority.
“Since I assumed our country’s leadership, our administration has improved collaboration among security agencies, increased intelligence-driven operations, and better ensured the welfare of our armed forces and security personnel.
‘’I use this opportunity to salute the courage and everyday sacrifice of our service men and women. We may not always witness the tremendous efforts they make to keep us safe, but we benefit every day from the results of their dedication. Even if we do not thank them often enough, they willingly face danger so we can go about our lives freely and without fear.
‘’Our military, police, and intelligence agencies are committed to always responding to emerging security threats and new challenges because it is the patriotic duty they owe a grateful nation.
“Amid the new security challenges, we can report some successes. In some areas of the North-West, hitherto under the control of bandits, our gallant armed forces have restored order, reducing and eliminating threats to lives and livelihoods.
“With the success achieved, farmers are back tilling the land to feed us. Highways, hitherto dangerous for travellers, have become safer. Our security agencies have succeeded many times in rescuing the abducted citizens from the hands of their tormentors.
‘’I promise you, we shall remain vigilant, as I told security chiefs during the last meeting to up their game and collaborate to end this plague of evil men. Every Nigerian deserves to live without fear.
‘’Outside of security, we have prioritised human capital development as a central pillar of our national development strategy.
‘’To this end, we have significantly expanded access to quality education through infrastructure investments and the student loan scheme to support indigent students in tertiary institutions. Through the Renewed Hope Health initiative, our administration has begun equipping health facilities and deploying skilled personnel to unserved areas.
‘’We are also strengthening our response to public health threats and implementing targeted social investment schemes.
“Our youth empowerment initiatives include access to funds, skills development, and creating employment opportunities. Through our MSME support, we empower the next generation and bridge inequality.
“In our mission to empower the next generation, we have taken bold steps to place young Nigerians at the heart of national development.
“Nowhere is this more evident than at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, where the current management is making giant strides. NASENI has embraced a digital-first approach, introduced real-time dashboards, and implemented end-to-end e-procurement through its Unified ERP System—setting a new governance benchmark for public institutions.
“Through bold, high-impact programmes like Innovate Naija, Irrigate Nigeria, the Asset Restoration Programme, and the Renewable Energy and Innovation Park in Gora, NASENI drives inclusive industrialisation at scale.
“From assembling electric vehicles and reviving idle assets to launching Africa’s most advanced Rapid Diagnostic Kit Factory and training female drone engineers through the NASCAV programme, these initiatives are creating jobs, restoring dignity to work, and opening up a future of possibilities for our youth.

APC, PDP, LP, CUPP disagree
Meanwhile, opposition political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Labour Party, LP, and the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, have disagreed with Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, over the president’s performance so far.
While the APC said the President is on track in delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians, the opposition parties faulted the ruling party.
This came on a day former President Muhammadu Buhari warned that necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to domestic politics.
President Tinubu took over the mantle of office on May 29, 2023, after being declared winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
However, mixed reactions have greeted the administration’s performance in the last two years in office.
Tinubu must apologise, step aside over failures — PDP
Citing the administration’s failure to address critical national challenges, the PDP called on President Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians and outline a clear exit plan from office.
The opposition party accused Tinubu of deepening the country’s economic hardship, security crisis, and democratic decline during his two years in office.
The party’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Mr Timothy Osadolor, while commenting on President Tinubu’s two-year tenure in a chat with Vanguard, described the administration’s performance as ‘tragic and astonishing.’
Osadolor said: “I wouldn’t want to paint a picture of utter despair but the situation is undeniably sad.
“It is both tragic and astonishing that Tinubu’s government has descended from the ridiculous to the unimaginable. For a man who has long presented himself as a champion of democracy, it is deeply shameful that lawlessness has become the order of the day under his leadership.
“In a functioning democracy, one would expect the president to question why legitimate court orders are being disregarded. This is the first count against his administration.
“His first major statement, announcing the removal of subsidy, was made without caution or consideration.
“No responsible leader in a civilised society would make such a reckless declaration without anticipating its devastating consequences. The ensuing spiral in the value of the naira and the skyrocketing prices of commodities left the economy in shambles.
‘’Today, the value of a Nigerian life is tragically diminished, comparable to that of those who rank among the least employed globally.
“President Tinubu should use his second-anniversary address to apologise to Nigerians for his failure to deliver on his ‘renewed hope’ mandate.
“His tenure has only deepened the hopelessness left by his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Such an apology must be sincere and purposeful, not merely a gesture of political correctness.”
Our govt would have done better – LP
The Julius Abure-led Labour Party, LP, said the party would have done a better job of managing Nigeria than the APC-led administration has done within the last two years.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, in a chat with Vanguard, said: “Nigerians are now in a better position to appreciate what we said before the 2023 elections. We foresaw the hardship, poverty and economic downturn being suffered by Nigerians today.
“Nigerians are better qualified to answer questions on whether their lives are better now than it was two years ago. How much is a bag of rice today when compared to what it was two years ago?
“Are we now more secure on our roads and at home? What about the purchasing power of our citizens, is it better?
“We make bold to say a Labour Party government would have done a better job of managing the economy and improving the lives of Nigerians.
“Today, the naira, which exchanged for N167 to a dollar at some point, is now exchanging for over N1,600; petrol which sold for N87 per liter now sells for over N1,000 per litre; with nearly 40 per cent inflation which has now reached over 42 per cent.
“Do we begin to talk about youth unemployment and the rise in all forms of criminality? It will not be entirely correct to say the government did nothing in two years, it has borrowed more than any government before it. Do we have value for money?”
It’s the worst in Nigeria’s history — CUPP
On its part, the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, said the two years of the Tinubu administration represented the worst period in Nigeria’s history since 1960.
CUPP, in a statement by its National spokesperson, Mr Mark Adebayo, said: “Two years ago, severe hunger came to town in Nigeria through President Bola Tinubu., insecurity became exacerbated.
“Youth joblessness assumed exponential implosion. Out-of-school children statistics jumped from twenty million to almost forty million. Inflation has lept to over 36%. Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad have been inactive because no ambassadors to represent the country has been posted. Nigeria has become a sleeping partner in the comity of nations.
“The people in Benue and Plateau states and other parts of the country are being murdered in cold blood en masse daily by an invading army of terrorists, killer herders, and bold kidnappers. Even Abuja, the seat of government, is not safe from these predators who daily prey on innocent and defenceless Nigerians.
“Our health institutions are now worse than mere consulting centres as the country’s medicare has collapsed. The masses bear the heavy burden of Nigeria’s health sector crises as our president and his cabinet find solace abroad with their families for medical treatment.
“Nigerians are already tired of this government and have rejected President Tinubu due to his atrocious economic and anti-people policies for the past two years.
‘’Nigerians are aware that a second term for President Tinubu would be extremely disastrous and are already looking out for a credible alternative to replace him in 2027. Nigerians cannot afford affliction to rise a second time.
“The opposition is poised to avail Nigerians a competent, patriotic, compassionate, creative president with a revolutionary mindset to fix Nigeria’s myriads of problems within the shortest possible time.”
We’re on track, says APC
The ruling APC, however, fired back and expressed confidence in the Tinubu-led administration, saying in the last two years, the president had set the nation on the right track.
The party’s Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, said the president has achieved a lot within the period under review.
Duru noted that even where mistakes were made, the president has taken deliberate steps to reverse such.
He said: “A lot has been achieved two years down the line and still another two years to go. The lessons of the past will also come in handy, going into the remaining two years. So, we wait for the next two years to see what happens but I can already think that in a way, it will be with confidence and the impact of the reforms will begin to bear fruits.
“I believe Mr President when he said he didn’t covet the office, he wanted it. He knows what to do with it and that is a very categorical statement, meaning he has an eye on history, and how history will reckon and register him. That gives a major confidence.
“Mr President is on the right track and where there are mistakes, efforts to correct them are being made and then in a way, that is to the benefit of Nigerians.”
Reforms must not fall victim to domestic politics — Buhari
Meanwhile, former President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics.
Buhari said as the party and government celebrate, the country should be reminded that leadership was a continuous journey.
The former President in a statement by his Media Aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, called for steadfast support for the APC government as it marks its second year in office, explaining that reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight.
The statement read: “He (Buhari) expressed support for the ongoing efforts by the administration to curb poverty and inflation, which he says have hit the poorest families the hardest adding, however, the task of reducing poverty and inflation which is immense, mustn’t be left only for the government.
“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can. Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy.
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office.”
As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks its second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has warned against letting “necessary reforms and desired changes” be derailed by “nettlesome domestic politics.”
Buhari congratulated President Tinubu on his mid-term and urged Nigerians to manage their expectations from the government, noting that “reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight.”
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the former President insisted that combating poverty and inflation, problems he acknowledged have “hit the poorest families the hardest,” cannot fall on the government alone.
The statement was titled ‘Tinubu Gets Buhari’s Praise, Advice At Midterm.’
“Muhammadu Buhari called for steadfast support for the APC government as it marks its second year in office, explaining that reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight.
“He warned that necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics,” the statement read.
Since taking office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” ended petrol subsidies, liberalised the naira, and fully repaid a $3.4bn COVID-19 loan, while sparking a severe cost-of-living crisis at home.
On May 23, 2025, the All Progressives Congress officially endorsed Tinubu as its sole 2027 candidate, amid defections from the opposition.
Buhari expressed support for the ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to curb poverty and inflation, urging that “The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can.”
He advised Nigerians to remain optimistic and stay confident about the country’s future, saying, “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” President Buhari said in the conclusion of his message.”
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” he concluded.
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says he was threatened by an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) to make confessional statements after his arrest in 2015.
Kanu spoke on Wednesday after the prosecution called its third witness, simply identified as CCC.
Like the first two witnesses – AAA and BBB – the third witness told the court that he was part of the team of DSS officers who investigated Kanu in 2015.
The witness said he and two other DSS officers interviewed Kanu on October 21, 22, 23 and 24 and also on November 4.
He said the interview was recorded on video, noting that Kanu also wrote statements after every session.
Adegboyega Awomolo, counsel to the federal government, tendered two video compact discs (CDs) containing the interviews and also three copies of statements allegedly written by Kanu.
Although the defence team did not oppose the exhibits at first, Paul Erokoro, one of the senior advocates who spoke on behalf of Kanu, later raised an objection.
Erokoro said Kanu had just informed him that the written statements were made under duress.
The IPOB leader’s counsel told the court that DSS operatives denied the defendant access to his lawyer, threatened to deny him bail and withheld his daily hour of fresh air recommended due to his health condition.
James Omotosho, presiding judge, ordered the conduct of a trial-within-a-trial to ascertain the voluntariness or otherwise of the defendant’s statements.
TRIAL-WITHIN-TRIAL
During the trial-within-a-trial, the DSS witness insisted that Kanu wrote his statement voluntarily.
Erokoro asked the witness if he understood the process of detaining a suspect, knew all the officers at the DSS headquarters, and had contact with Kanu in his cell.
CCC said he never entered Kanu’s cell but knew all the gatekeepers who could interact with the defendant.
Erokoro said, “I put it to you that if any DSS officer named Mr Brown visited the defendant in his cell to threaten him, you won’t know.”
Responding, CCC said the DSS does not operate like that.
During the trial within a trial, Kanu said the coercion by the DSS started from Lagos when his hands and legs were chained, and he was blindfolded and put on a plane.
Kanu added that he did not know where the operatives were taking him after landing in Abuja.
He said the DSS kept him in a solitary confinement with no form of light, adding that a particular Mr Brown, who he said was the assistant director of investigations, threatened him to cooperate during the interview or risk staying in a solitary confinement.
Kanu said due to his poor health and the bad condition of his cell, he started having nosebleeds, which prompted the medical doctor in the facility to advise that he be allowed out of his cell one hour every day for fresh air.
“Mr Brown threatened me that if I don’t do what they ask me, they’re going to stop giving me that one-hour break,” Kanu said through his lawyer.
During cross-examination by the prosecution, Kanu insisted that some of the things he said during the video interview with the DSS operatives played in court had been edited out.
He claimed that the DSS operatives ordered him to write the statements.
After Kanu’s testimony, the trial-within-a-trial was closed.
The judge asked the prosecution and defence teams to adopt their written addresses and file by 9 am on May 29.
The court will also rule on the trial-within-a-trial on Thursday.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) says it has completed the airlift of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 hajj.
Abdullahi Usman, chairman of the NAHCON, spoke on Wednesday while addressing the national media team in Abuja.
Usman said the support of the federal government was instrumental to the smooth execution of the 2025 hajj airlift.
“We sincerely thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Vice-President Kashim Shettima, for their strong support in ensuring the success of the 2025 hajj operation,” Usman said.
“Their support gave us the confidence and structure needed to carry out a smooth and well-organised pilgrimage.”
The NAHCON chairman said the commission’s priority was to ensure seamless travel and adequate care for all pilgrims.
He added that the 2025 hajj airlift demonstrated the commission’s growing capacity to manage pilgrimage operations with precision and professionalism.
“It hasn’t been easy, but with proper planning, the help of Almighty Allah, and solid teamwork, we have completed the job successfully — alhamdulillah,” he said.
“We are grateful to everyone who made this possible — from the government, the airlines, the state boards, and all those working behind the scenes.”
He said the 2025 hajj recorded several achievements that signalled progress in the country’s pilgrimage administration.
“One key success was the timely and well-coordinated airlift of pilgrims, which was concluded within the official schedule,” he said.
Usman asked Nigerians to pray for the success of the pilgrims as they fulfil their spiritual obligations in the holy land.
Asked about the return leg of the operation, Usman said NAHCON would ensure the pilgrims’ safe return.
“Everything is in the hands of Allah,” he said.
“But as long as we continue to work together as one family — by God’s grace— my team and I will keep supporting our pilgrims, assisting them through their rites, and ensuring they return to Nigeria safely, in sha Allah.”
Earlier today, the commission said a “special” flight has been arranged for May 28 to transport the NAHCON chairman alongside other senior officials and 22 pilgrims, who were previously unable to travel due to various reasons.

President Bola Tinubu has urged Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leaders to match policies with actions for real impact on citizens.
Tinubu spoke in Lagos on Wednesday during the commemorative ceremony marking ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary.
He said the regional bloc is lagging in policy implementation and urged member states to turn plans into action.
Tinubu highlighted the organisation’s achievements, noting its efforts in expanding trade, restoring constitutional order, and launching bold strategies to enhance food security and promote regional development.
“Our region has pioneered a free movement, expanded intra-trade, regional trade and deepened integration. These measures have facilitated business, cultural heritages and mobility across West Africa,” he said.
“Of peace and security, ECOWAS has acted decisively to restore constitutional order and counter instability. Our regional cooperation on counterterrorism and financial crime reflects our shared commitment to peace and safety.
“In governance, ECOWAS has upheld democratic norms through election observations, mediation and institutions such as ECOWAS’s parliament and court of justice.
“In agriculture and infrastructure, we have launched bold strategies to address our food security and to drive our regional development. The ECOWAS infrastructure master plan 2020-2045 provides a framework for connectivity, trade and prosperity.
“Despite our progress, challenges remain. Our greatest task now is implementation. We are lagging behind on implementation, and I urge all member states to match policy with action.
“Let all our citizens feel the real impact of our shared efforts.”
The president, who is also the ECOWAS chairman, called on member states to place young people and women — who make up the majority of the region’s population — at the centre of development efforts through deliberate investments in education, entrepreneurship, healthcare, and leadership.
“We must mentor them. Their success is the key to the future and stability and prosperity of ECOWAS,” Tinubu added.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years, Tinubu urged renewed unity and determination among member states to promote trade and confront all forms of challenges.
‘ECOWAS IS UNSUNG HERO AMONG REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES’
Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs and chairman of the ECOWAS council of ministers, described the community as the “unsung hero” among regional economic communities in Africa.
Tuggar commended the ongoing reform process under Tinubu’s leadership, saying it is enhancing the implementation of ECOWAS objectives and paving the way for legal and regulatory convergence towards a customs union and common currency.
“We are also aware that ECOWAS is the unsung hero among the regional economic communities with its funding mechanism, the community levy, that others actually even seek to emulate,” the minister said.
“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the reform process has continued to make implementation of ECOWAS objectives more efficacious, fostering legal and regulatory convergence towards a customs union and common currency among member states.”
Tuggar addressed the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS, describing democracy as “a process, not an event” and expressing confidence that the countries would return to the regional bloc.
Tinubu must change his policies, he won’t win next election if it’s free and fair - says Onaiyekan

John Onaiyekan, a cardinal and former Catholic archbishop of Abuja, says President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects in a free and fair election would be jeopardised if he continues with his current policies.
Onaiyekan spoke in Abuja on Wednesday during an interview with journalists after participating in the communication week public lecture organised by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).
The cardinal pointed out the disconnect between the government and the people, stressing the need for the president to understand the everyday struggles of the ordinary Nigerians.
“My advice for Mr. President is to find ways and means of finding out what Nigeria is actually going through,” Onaiyekan said.
“Not those around him who are always praising him to the skies. They should find out. It is the job of every leader now.
“I’m not telling him to go and live in Mpape for two days, which would not be a bad idea. But he should be able to know how the people in Mpape are surviving. He should also know how families are managing with N30,000 salary a day.
“Since it is the people that he should serve, he should do more to raise the level of well-being of Nigerians.
“I don’t think we are unfair to the government if we say that in the last two years, our level of well-being has crashed considerably. The government may say it’s not their fault.
“They may say they have done their best. But the government is there to make sure that that does not happen. The government is there to make sure that at least the level of well-being of Nigerians is maintained and, if possible, improved.
“And I think it is a good time. Two years is halfway through for him to at least try and do that.
“If he changes gear in that regard and takes policies that really target the poor people of Nigeria, they will remember him forever.
“But if he continues like this for the rest of his term, if we have a free and fair election, he will not win. Because how can the country bring him back if we are not feeling good?
“Obviously, if they are not waiting for us to vote and they already made up their mind, if we win, okay, we praise the nation; we will continue. Going down, going down.”
He said the president should govern the country well and make it liveable for the ordinary Nigerian.
“We are still 250 million of us here in this country. We are struggling, and we shall win, we shall win. So, I’m hoping that the people around Mr. President will give him that advice,” Onaiyekan said.
“The elections were over two years ago. He doesn’t have to worry again whether he won the election or not. The Supreme Court said he won, so we have agreed now.
“We have agreed that he won. This is what the Supreme Court said, we have nowhere else to go. Now he should just govern, make life as liveable as possible for Nigerians, deal with security everywhere, improve the economic level of our people, and fight corruption.
Troops of operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have arrested 18 serving soldiers and 15 police officers for allegedly selling arms to terrorists and other criminal elements.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday about the activities of troops in the north-east, Ademola Owolana, a major, said operation snowball, an exercise launched in August 2024 to target ammunition racketeering in the theatre, has recorded successes.
Owolana said the exercise was conducted across 11 states, with suspects arrested in Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Ebonyi, Enugu, Lagos, Plateau, Kaduna, Rivers, Taraba and the federal capital territory (FCT).
He said eight civilians and one traditional ruler were also arrested over alleged arms racketeering.
“So far, a total of 18 soldiers, 15 mobile policemen, and eight civilians, including a traditional ruler, have been arrested,” he said.
Owolana said the “lucrative” nature of arms racketeering is the driving force behind the illegal activity.
He noted that Ameh Raphael, an armourer of the 7th division garrison, who has been engaging in the act since 2018, had N45 million in his bank account.
He added that Seidi Adamu of the 3rd division ordnance services, who has also been in the trade since 2022, had N34 million in his bank account.
He said the investigation revealed that N135 million passed through the bank account of Enoch Ngwa, a police inspector, arrested for arms racketeering.
He accused some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of conveying additives and food items to terrorist locations under the guise of humanitarian assistance.
“Additionally, a few soldiers motivated by greed are involved in ammunition racketeering, deliberately diverting arms from the military stockpiles and supply chains to terrorists,” he said.
“Such actions erode battlefield morale, reduce troops’ effectiveness, and strengthen enemy resistance.
“The most recent incident occurred on 24th February this year when a soldier of 144 Battalion was arrested with 30 rounds of 7.62mm specials at Tashin-Karo Kano by a military police K-19 on route search operations.
“Consequently, the theatre has continued to warn troops at all levels of the severe repercussions and sanctions of ammunition racketeering.
“Those found culpable have been dismissed and handed over to the police to serve as a deterrent.”

Singer Niniola Apata has opened up on the reason she never signed with a record label despite multiple offers.
Niniola spoke during an interview with Hip TV.
Recall that she has been an independent artist for a decade, stating that her hesitation stemmed from fears of losing creative control over her unique Afrohouse genre which is a blend of African elements, house music, and her personal flair.
At the time of her 2014 debut single Ibadi, Afrohouse was not widely embraced, and Niniola worried labels would push her to alter her sound.
Instead, she partnered with her former manager to establish her own label, maintaining her artistic vision.
She said, “I have been an independent artist for 10 years now, and it has its pros and cons. After I released my debut single in 2014, several record labels were calling me, but at the time, I was skeptical because I didn’t want anyone to take away my creative freedom,” she said.
“At the time, nobody was into my genre, Afrohouse, and you know how labels can say they investing in me and I have to do what they want, and I don’t want that happening to me.
“So, I wasn’t convinced enough to sign to a label. So my former manager, who has become my business partner, decided to set up a label, and that’s what we have been running together.
“Even all through the years, some deals have been coming, but I have not been comfortable with them.
“Afrohouse is a combination of African style and house music, so that makes it Nini, bringing my own flair into house music”.
“It feels good to be known as the queen of Afrohouse, and I have been able to carry on the genre because when I started, some people had concerns about the longevity and the language, because I sing in Yoruba.
She emphasised the importance of authenticity, faith, and gratitude in her sustained success.
“At the end of the day, I have seen that you just need to be yourself, pray, be thankful, and everything will fall into place”,she added.
A Federal Government witness has told the Abuja Federal High Court that IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu admitted smuggling the Biafra Radio transmitter into Anambra State in 2015.
The witness made the statement in Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial.
The witness codenamed PWCCC, an operative of the Department of State Service (DSS), said that Kanu while being interrogated confessed to setting up the radio station at Ubuluisiuzor, in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.
At the resumption of the trial on Wednesday, the DSS witness also informed the court that Kanu admitted that he established Radio Biafra to advance the self determination cause of the people of South-East region of the country.
The DSS had earlier in the month tendered audio recordings of Kanu’s broadcasts from the radio station as exhibits in which the defendant was heard calling for the killing of several prominent Nigerians.
A DSS officer also told the court that Kanu’s broadcasts incited many of his supporters to carry out attacks on some prominent Nigerians and institutions.
The PWCCC, a third prosecution witness, told the court on Wednesday that Kanu on November 4, 2015, in an interview with his colleagues, admitted smuggling a radio transmitter into Nigeria.
The video clip of the November 4, 2015 interview session with DSS officers where Kanu admitted inspecting the radio transmitter he installed in Ubuluisiuzor, Anambra State, was played in court and admitted as exhibit.
Drama however ensued when the Federal Government through its lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, tendered one of the statements made by Kanu.
In the unfolding drama, Kanu after being shown the statement by his lead lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, claimed that he made it under duress and not voluntarily.
He also claimed that the statement in which he severely indicted himself on some unlawful actions of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB was made without the presence of his lawyer.
Based on the allegations, Justice James Omotosho ordered that trial within trial be conducted to ascertain the genuineness of Kanu’s allegations.
Among others, Kanu said the coercion started from Lagos when they were transporting him from Lagos to Abuja, where a DSS officer struck him, chained and blindfolded him.
During cross-examination by Awomolo, Kanu maintained that his detention at the DSS in 2015 was without any court order, and that his interview were taken without his lawyers, and the atmosphere was not conducive.
The PWAAA however debunked Kanu’s allegations, saying the interviews were conducted in the most conducive and harmonious atmosphere.
He urged the court to dismiss the allegations for being baseless, unfounded and an afterthought.
After the argument, Justice Omotosho asked Awomolo and Agabi to prepare their written addresses and file same tomorrow May 29 for their adoption by 12 noon on Friday and for ruling to be delivered by 2:00 pm, on whether to admit the statement or not.
The judge subsequently adjourned further proceedings to May 29.
The United States Government has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately address insecurity ravaging all parts of Nigeria.
This is according to a statement by the United States Embassy in Nigeria, on Wednesday.
The US govt said acts of violence are increasingly being witnessed across the country.
US Embassy, in a statement on its ? handle, noted that Plateau, Imo, Borno and Benue State are recording increasing rise in insecurity.
The statement said the threats faced by Nigerian communities at the hands of bandits and terrorists are troubling.
“The United States Embassy in Nigeria is deeply saddened by and condemns recent acts of violence in Borno, in Imo, and most recently in Benue and Plateau. The ongoing threats faced by communities and community leaders in Nigeria are deeply troubling,” it read.
The United States consoled families affected by the killings from bandits and terrorists.
The statement further called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to tame insecurity and hold perpetrators accountable.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by these senseless acts. We look to Nigerian authorities to conduct thorough investigations to hold those responsible accountable,” it stated.
The US assured its support in promoting peace, security and human rights in the country.
“The United States stands with Nigeria in its efforts to promote peace, security, and respect for human rights across the country,” it added.
Sule Lamido, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has shed light on the behind-the-scenes developments that led to the eventual construction of the ministry’s permanent office complex during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration (1999–2007).
Lamido’s account of an incident involving the award, suspension and lifting of the suspension on the building contract is contained on pages 197- 202 of his autobiography, “Being True To Myself,” unveiled to the public on May 13.
He recalled that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had at a meeting presided over by President Obasanjo, approved the contract for the building.
According to him, a firm – C. Cappa came highly recommended for the job by members of the council, including the then Minister of Defence, Lt. General TY Danjuma, and his Finance counterpart, Adamu Ciroma.
Both based their recommendations on the company’s solid reputation and the fact that it built the Federal Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs in Lagos. In fact, the defence building was rated the best edifice at the time.
However, when he left the country for a foreign assignment two days later, Obasanjo suspended the contract.
The then minister said he learnt of the President’s decision when he returned and was upset with what Obasanjo wrote on the council memo.
Lamido said, “Before I left the office to the Villa, I had gone home at the Ministers’ Hill in Maitama, where some of the ministers had their official houses. It was during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“The sun had set, yet I could not eat very well, because I was in pain. After the Isha prayer, as I was about to leave for the Villa, I performed two raka ‘at prayer and made a sincere plea to Allah, the Almighty God, saying:
‘Well, I am going out now to meet Obasanjo, the Nigerian President. I am leaving this house as a Minister in government, but do not know if I will come back still as a Minister after meeting the President.
‘Oh Allah, give me the strength and courage to stand up to whatever he says. Don’t allow me to fear losing my position and abandon my principles. Please, Ya Allah, strengthen my faith.
‘I’m leaving this house as a Minister; I may not come back as a Minister. I have no problem with that, but God guide me, save my faith. ‘ That was how I left home for the meeting with the President.’”
After registering his displeasure, Lamido told the President, “’…Something wrong must have happened. Sir, the Chairman of the company that awarded the contract is your friend, Shonekan. He is your townsman and also former Head of the Interim National Government. There is no way I could have accepted money from him.
‘So, sir, if you feel I am beginning to fail you, as a Minister, that you have lost faith and all confidence in me, please don’t disgrace me in public like that. Call me and tell me directly; and I will instantly leave your government.
‘But so long as I remain your Minister, I must in character and action be seen to be one, exercising the full functions of that office. I should have the full authority, because I cannot be just a shadow. I will not, sir. I must be able to serve as your Minister with full conviction and commitment, while commanding your trust and total respect. Otherwise, I shall not be there anymore, sir.
‘Whatever you might have heard about the contract, you should have called me to explain. Instead, you went to the same Council and announced that the contract had been suspended. How would you expect my other colleagues in council to see me now?'”
In response, President Obasanjo said, “’Okay, Sule, tomorrow at the Council meeting, I will lift the suspension on the contract. And it will go ahead. Are you happy now?’ I said, ‘I am happy.’
“Obasanjo, in his characteristic manner, replied, ‘Stupid boy, get out of my sight.’ I ran out laughing but full of gratitude to Allah for answering my supplication.”
The contract subsequently went ahead and was completed.
