The Police Service Commission, PSC, has said it has no constitutional powers to determine the appointment or removal of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP.
DAILY POST recalls that the Police Service Commission had last week directed all serving police officers who have served for 35 years, or attained the age of 60 years, to proceed on immediate retirement in line with existing laws.
Since the directive several public commentators have argued that the directives should also affect the tenure of the IGP
But Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations of the PSC, in a statement on Monday, said, “By virtue of Paragraph 30, part 1 of the third schedule to the Constitution, and clause 6 (1) of the Police Service Commission (Establisment) Act, 2001, the Commission is charged with the responsibilities of appointment, promotion, dismissal and exercising disciplinary control over persons holding offices in the Nigeria Police Force (except the Inspector General of Police).
“The law is clear on the mandate of the Commission and it does not extend to the Inspector General of Police who is an appointee of Mr. President with the advice of the Police Council.
“The Commission at its 1st Extraordinary Meeting of the 6th Management Board on Friday 31st January 2025, only considered and took decision on the regularisation of date of First appointment of CADET ASPs/Inspector Force Entrants. This has nothing to do with the Inspector General of Police or his office.
“The Commission wishes to state that it is comfortable with the size of the powers which the Constitution has bestowed on it and is not interested in shopping for more powers that obviously are not backed by law.”
The Commission also noted that it has maintained a close and complementary working relationship with the Inspector General of Police in the overall interest of the Nigeria Police Force.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s special adviser on energy, Olu Verheijen, has clarified her statement on the eminent 65 percent electricity tariff hike in Nigeria.
Verheijen made this clarification in a statement on Monday through her official X account.
This comes after the presidential aide barely 24 hours ago hinted that Nigerians should expect a fresh electricity tariff hike within months.
Her statement had sparked a reaction among Nigerians.
According to a former Nigerian senator from Kaduna State, Shehu Sani, the government must stop the ‘unconscionable tariff hike’.
This comes as Nigerians still grapple with the April 2024 over 200 percent electricity tariff hike.
Meanwhile, Verheijen in a fresh statement clarified that the country’s current tariff covers about 65 percent of the actual cost of supplying electricity.
According to her, the federal government is still paying N200 billion on electricity subsidies. She, however said, 25 percent wealthiest Nigerians receive the biggest share of electricity subsidies.
“I would like to clarify media reports suggesting an imminent 65 percent increase in electricity tariffs.
“What I actually said: Following the increase in Band A tariffs, Current tariffs now cover about 65 percent of the actual cost of supplying electricity, with the Federal Government continuing to subsidize the difference.
“The Federal Government is committed to fair electricity pricing, protecting vulnerable Nigerians, and expanding access to reliable power.
“Right now, N200 billion per month is spent on electricity subsidies but the wealthiest 25 percent of Nigerians receive the biggest share. To address this, we are working towards transitioning to a targeted subsidy system that ensures that low-income households receive the most support.
“Additionally, we are commencing the nationwide rollout of 7 million prepaid meters, under the Presidential Metering Initiative, beginning this year. This will finally put an end to the practice of estimated billing, giving consumers confidence in what they are paying for and ensuring transparency in electricity charges.
“Beyond that, we’re lowering energy costs by removing VAT and Customs Duties on cleaner fuel alternatives like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)—offering Nigerians cheaper options for power.
“We understand the economic challenges facing Nigerians and remain committed to ensuring that power sector reforms deliver real benefits to Nigerian homes and businesses”, she stated
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday tendered more documents as evidence against social media celebrity Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha, who is charged with six billion naira money laundering.
The case is before an Ikeja Special Offences Court.
Mustapha, who is still at large, is standing trial alongside his company, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd., on eight counts related to money laundering.
Musa Idi, the sixth prosecution witness, was led in evidence by EFCC Counsel Suleiman Suleiman.
Idi, in the continuation of his evidence-in-chief on Monday, tendered documents purportedly received from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Defence Counsel, Kolawole Salami, objected to the admissibility of the documents on the grounds that the documents, which originated from the US Department of Justice through the US Consulate office, were public documents and were not certified.
He argued that EFCC was not the maker of the documents and could not purportedly certify them.
In her ruling, Justice Mojisola Dada, however, admitted the documents as exhibits P8, P9, and P10 respectively.
The prosecution witness testified that Mompha admitted during the investigation that the wristwatches recovered by the anti-graft agency belonged to him.
“Even though he did not declare them in the Asset Declaration Form filled upon his arrest,” Musa said.
Under cross-examination by the defence, the witness confirmed to the court that Mompha was arrested in 2019 and was previously charged before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, for money laundering-related offences, which are still pending before the court.
He told the court that the wristwatches were ordered to be released to the defendant by two separate orders of the Federal High Court, which EFCC had failed to comply with.
The witness said that the document referred to in count seven was obtained in the absence of Mompha, and that when he was confronted with the document during the investigation, he denied knowledge of it.
Idi admitted that no petition was received from Continental Diary Facility Southwest LLC in respect of Mompha and that it was the commission that had enquired from the company, resulting in a statement being made.
The court adjourned the case until March 13 for the continuation of the trial
Singer Naira Marley has shared his old conversation with actress Iyabo Ojo prior to Mohbad’s death.
This is coming some months after Iyabo Ojo publicly called out Naira Marley over the death of his signee, Mohbad.
She accused him of bullying the late singer to his death.
DAILY POST reports that Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and buried the following day.
His body was later exhumed for autopsy by the Lagos State Police Command following public outcry over circumstances surrounding his death.

Embattled American rapper, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been rushed to the hospital from his prison cell.
The singer was secretly whisked out of his federal prison cell late at night on Thursday, to avoid any speculation.
Diddy who is currently locked up at the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center, is facing trial for numerous sex crimes.
According to DailyMail.com, the singer received an MRI at Brooklyn Hospital, following a knee injury. And was taken back to his cell after the conclusion of the MRI.
It was gathered that the injury was not from a jail altercation or fight but ‘just an old injury that was bothering him.’
Francis Van-Lare, the father-in-law to United States-based Nigerian cardiologist, Dr Ikenna Erinne, has refuted claims that the late doctor took his own life due to financial strain from a $15,000 monthly child support ruling.
He made this disclosure on Monday as a clarification to the viral claim.
According to him, it was just $1,900 which the late doctor paid partially sometimes.
Van-Lare also dispelled the claim that Erinne was a peaceful and quiet guy while sharing screenshots of restraining orders from state of Maryland Court circuit.
The father of Erinne’s estranged partner wrote, “Liars everywhere. He killed himself to avoid paying $1,900.00 monthly which he pays partially sometimes. He was not asked to pay $15,000 a month as alleged. Dead beat dad!
“Go to the state of Maryland Court circuit and check numerous restraining orders. Quiet and peaceful guy my foot. Any more rubbish talk about my family, I will share more revelations.
“I am a bull dozer and will bull doze any lying blogger. Nobody should blame my daughter for the embarrassment he caused everyone.”
Recall that the tragic death of the 36-year-old cardiologist has sparked intense debate and widespread reactions from Nigerians both at home and abroad.
Francis Van-Lare has alleged that before his suicide, the deceased doctor held his daughter and grandchildren hostage at gunpoint for three hours.
He ultimately turned the weapon on himself when police arrived.
Van-Lare, a socialite and public figure, made the claim on his official Facebook account on Sunday.
This was in response to an earlier post by Facebook user Amanda Chisom, who clarified that Erinne’s ex-partner was not a white woman, as widely speculated, but Van-Lare’s daughter.
He further said, “While my daughter was involved in a custody battle, I only became aware around 3am Nigerian time last Monday that the deceased held her and her children at gunpoint for three hours after losing the case.
“The nanny managed to escape and called the police, and upon their arrival, he shot himself.”
He also revealed that Erinne was facing three counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon, each carrying a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
“I guess he decided to kill himself instead of facing the charges,” he added.
Despite the shocking nature of the incident, Van-Lare expressed sympathy for the late doctor’s family, clarifying that his daughter was not responsible for his decision to take his own life.
“While I sympathise with his family, my daughter is not to blame for his death. And I thank God it did not escalate to where he shot my daughter, grandchildren, and himself,” the father-in-law stated.

Elon Musk says US President Donald Trump has agreed to shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
USAID is the world’s premier international development agency. It is responsible for billions of dollars in US aid projects across the world — with most of these funds funnelled into disaster relief efforts while promoting development and global health.
Foreign assistance distributed by the agency makes up less than one percent of the US government budget.
The Tesla and X CEO said he checked in with Trump a few times who said: “Yes we are shutting it down”.
Musk, who leads the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) spoke in an X Spaces stream around midnight on Sunday, hours after describing USAID as “a criminal organization. Time for it to die”.
On Saturday, USAID’s website went dark as the Trump administration made good its campaign promise to freeze foreign assistance.
There were reports that Trump was planning to issue another executive order that would dismantle USAID and move its operations to the State Department.
USAID has over 10,000 employees in more than 100 countries. Some of the agency’s senior leadership officials were ousted in the wake of Trump’s “stop work” order and nearly 400 contract employees were laid off.
Three USAID workers told the New York Times that they were concerned that an AI programme known as Gemini had been installed in their email accounts.
Lawmakers have argued that Trump cannot unilaterally close down the agency as it is a creation of congress.

Fred Oghenesivbe, director general of the Delta state orientation and communication bureau, says Ned Nwoko resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over fears that he would not secure the party’s senatorial ticket in 2027.
The senator representing Delta north, had in a letter dated January 30, 2025, notified his ward in Aniocha north LGA of his decision to quit the party.
The lawmaker said his resignation from the PDP is due to “deep divisions and factionalisaton within the party”.
The senator added that the crisis in the party has not allowed him to deliver on his promises to constituents.
Speaking during an interview with TVC news at the weekend, Oghenesivbe said Nwoko’s defection was “about 2027 politics and securing a ticket to run”.
Oghenesivbe, an aide to Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta governor, described the reasons stated in the lawmaker’s resignation letter as “laughable”.
“We all knew it was only a matter of time before he (Nwoko) defected. This is about the politics of 2027 and his chances of securing the ticket to run,” he said.
“As of today, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is the leader of the PDP in Delta state, and Senator Nwoko has not been aligning with the governor or working closely with PDP leaders in the state.
“So, Nwoko is somehow scared that he may not get the PDP ticket (senatorial) in 2027 because he has misrepresented our party at the national assembly.
“What I meant by he has misrepresented the party is that the issues that he raised concerning delivery of the dividends of democracy to his people is at variance with what we believe in the PDP. We believe in procedure, we believe in obeying laws.
“There is this issue of Okpai step down transformer, which is a joint venture of the federal government, the NNPCL, and the federal government.
“And I think one of the parties in that agreement failed to perform their responsibility, by way of supplying about 20% of the light generated in that area to immediate communities. And that is not the business of the state government.
“But Ned Nwoko went ahead to say that the governor of the state should bring the money to step down the power. And we said in a joint venture agreement which is legally binding, for you to bring another party into the agreement, then all the stakeholders must come to a roundtable to discuss the possibility of bringing in Delta state government.
“But because Ned wanted to play politics, he felt he could just use that as a leeway to find his way out of the party by saying the governor did not bring out the money.”

Former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has contributed to the raging debate over Sharia panel in the South-West, describing opposition to it as a demonstration of ignorance.
Daily Trust reports that there has been controversy over the planned establishment of Sharia Panel in Oyo State and other states in the South-West.
In Ekiti where the panel was established, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, summoned the Chief Imam of Ado Ekiti, Shaykh Jamiu Kewulere, and ordered the disbandment of the panel.
Some Yoruba activists have also opposed the panel, citing the secularity of the Yoruba tribe.
They argued that Sharia states are currently “theatres of war, strife, killings and kidnapping driven by crisis of faith while the Sharia states also have the highest rate of instability in Nigeria.”
But Muslim leaders have also argued that the panels being proposed were mere arbitration panels which would deal with civil matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, among Muslims.
Speaking on the debate, Shittu in an interview on a television station stated that it is ignorance that is breeding the opposition to the panel establishment.
He said the panels have been in existence in some states for over a decade, adjudicating on civil matters among Muslims.
He said, “In Yorubaland, whether governors or the so-called Yoruba activists, their problem is ignorance of the constitution of Nigeria.
“Sharia is about fundamental human rights in relation to religion. The constitution guarantees freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
“What is the sense of two Muslims going to get married in the mosque under Sharia Law, when they want to divorce, you ask them to go to a Customary Court which may be completely made up of even Christians, animists or people who do not understand the law under which these people got married.
“Common sense dictates that the law under which you married should be the one to be used in deciding on your divorce In Oyo State, there has been a Sharia Panel and in Lagos State for more than 10 years. What crisis has it caused to anybody? Has any Christian or non-Muslims been drafted to a Sharia Court?
“These constitutional fundamental religious rights are inherent in you as a human being whether in Ekiti or anywhere, people have a right to determine under which law they manage their affairs. I expect the Muslim Community in those states would take the government or people trying to disturb their peace to court.
The lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in Osun State, Oluwole Oke, has advised former Governor Rauf Aregbesola to reconcile with President Bola Tinubu, urging him to “go and beg, prostrate, and make peace” with his former political leader.
Oke, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the remark in a social media post on Sunday, stating that if he were in Aregbesola’s position, that is exactly what he would do.
His statement comes amid growing political tension in Osun State, where Aregbesola’s faction, Omoluabi Progressives, recently announced its exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to unresolved conflicts with the mainstream party.
The division was caused by a prolonged feud between Aregbesola and his successor, Adegboyega Oyetola, as well as reports of a fallout between Aregbesola and Tinubu.
“If I were in his shoes, I would go and beg, prostrate, and make peace with my principal, PBAT [President Bola Ahmed Tinubu].
“Assuming I were a member of the APC in Osun, I would ensure that Asiwaju Gboyega Oyetola and Ogbeni Aregbesola reconcile. As we know, ‘Ija o dola’ – fighting doesn’t bring wealth,” Oke wrote.
While calling Aregbesola a major political force in Osun, Oke also urged the PDP to capitalize on the APC’s internal divisions, describing the former minister as a “bride” in the state’s politics.
“The PDP must act fast, pay the necessary dowry, and bring this ‘bride’ into their fold.
“Ogbeni can still pull a minimum of 20,000 votes in Ife/Ijesa Senatorial District. His influence in Ijesa North and Ijesa South is undeniable,” he said.
Oke concluded by predicting that Aregbesola would remain a key player in Osun politics, saying, “Baba Kabiru is a factor. Keep this post and check back after 2026.”
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigerian singer, Tems, on her victory at the 67th annual Grammy Awards.

Reacting in a statement shared via his X handle on Monday, Obi also celebrated the other Nigerian artists who were nominated in various categories despite missing out on the awards.
“I extend my hearty congratulations to our Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tems @temsbaby , who just secured her second Grammy Award with her win in the Best African Music Performance category.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has warned Nigerians against fire outbreaks across the country.
Adeboye gave the warning while preaching at the church’s February thanksgiving service at the Throne of Grace Parish, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
The cleric called for vigilance and prayer in the face of potential disasters, including storms and floods.
“I must share something very urgent,” Adeboye said.
“At the beginning of this year, one of the prophecies was to pray against fire outbreaks, storms, and floods.
“We’ve only spent one month, and we’ve already seen the rate of fire incidents across the world. Nigeria is part of the world, and we must be prayerful.”
Adeboye specifically warned farmers preparing their lands for cultivation to avoid bush burning.
“Don’t joke with any form of naked fire around you,” he stressed.
“And farmers, please don’t burn bushes while preparing your farms.
“Don’t say I didn’t tell you. May the Almighty God answer our prayers and grant our requests,” he said.
