The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has attributed Nigeria’s lack of measurable progress since independence to the nation’s tendency to choose darkness over light.
Delivering his Christmas message at the Holy Family Cathedral Catholic Church, Sokoto Diocese on Tuesday night, Kukah emphasised that embracing transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service, politics, and individual conduct could significantly improve the country’s current state.
“Nigeria’s lack of visible and measurable progress is tied to the fact that we have chosen darkness rather than light.
“Imagine if we let the light shine on our public service, on our politics, on our individual, community, and national life, and on our public institutions. Imagine what Nigeria would be like if we chose light instead of darkness,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to live by the message of the Christian hymn, “They will know we are Christians by our love,” highlighting that the country’s journey to greatness remains constrained by ethnicity, nepotism, and greed.
The bishop also expressed concern over the dominance of ethnicity and religion in accessing opportunities, which, he said, often overshadows the sense of common citizenship.
He noted that feelings of exclusion push many citizens toward violence and frustration, further undermining national unity.
“We are still unable to embrace the ideals of our national anthem that says: ‘Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand.’ Diversity is a gift from God. Let us use it effectively as a tool for national mobilization and cohesion,” he advised.
Kukah also lauded the passage of the Not Too Young to Run Bill in 2018, which opened doors for increased youth participation in politics.
However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as the high costs of political participation and issues of internal democracy, which still hinder young people’s active engagement.
He also commended the enactment of the Student Loan Act 2024 and the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund by the federal government.
These initiatives, he noted, have the potential to expand opportunities for Nigerian youth, including those pursuing vocational and technical skills.
“It is significant that the Act does not limit access to university students alone. We hope this project will be free of bureaucratic bottlenecks and favoritism, ensuring that poverty does not exclude anyone from receiving a good education,” Kukah said.
He encouraged the youth to take full advantage of these opportunities while also expressing concern about the ongoing security challenges in the country, which he described as a persistent obstacle to national stability.
Kukah, however, called on all Nigerians to choose the path of light, unity, and love, stressing that these values are essential for the nation’s progress and development.

The federal government has launched a 10-year national action plan to protect endangered elephants in the country.
A statement by Ibrahim Goni, the National Park Service (NPS) conservator-general, said the plan was launched in collaboration with the Elephant Protection Initiative.
Goni noted that the action plan will last from 2024 to 2034, adding that the service also inaugurated other conservation initiatives to protect other endangered species.
He added that 25 African Grey Parrots have been rescued from wildlife traders and released into the forests in Cross River.
Goni said the initiatives had led to 621 arrests, with 466 prosecutions and 94 warnings, highlighting the service’s dedication to the fight against wildlife crime.
He added that the service has also enhanced its anti-poaching monitoring through the deployment of high-technology equipment like drones, power chutes, and GSM technology.
Goni thanked partners, noting that they have facilitated donations from organisations such as the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to the service.
“We also have donations from Sustainability and Conservation Education for Rural Areas (SCERA) and ACReSAL, supporting the service with essential equipment, training, and funding,” he added.
“Furthermore, 30 forest guards from the federal capital territory forestry department were trained in forest resources conservation and protection by the service.’’
He added that despite the achievements, the service also faced some security challenges, including banditry and terrorism in the course of discharging its duties.

Governors and ministers yesterday urged Nigerians to be hopeful as President Bola Ahmed Tinubutackles the challenges facing the country through the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
They also urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to always show love, compassion, and tolerance as exemplified by Jesus Christ, whose birth is being celebrated globally today.
In their separate Christmas messages, the governors and ministers also stressed the need for Nigerians to pray for the peace.
Governors Dapo Abiodun,(Ogun),, Seyi Makinde, Bassey Otu(Cross River), and Caleb Mutfwang(Plateau). The ministers were Nyesom Wike( Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Adebayo Adelabu(Power), and Iziaq Salako (Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare) congratulated Nigerians for witnessing another Christmas.
Prominent leaders who also felicitated Nigerians included former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, erstwhile Labour, and Employment Minister Chris Ngige; Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) Director-General Temitope Ilori.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Christopher Musa also rejoiced with troops, whom he praised for their resilience in the anti-terrorism war.
Abiodun called on Nigerians to look beyond the present economic challenges and be optimistic about a better tomorrow.
He admonished Ogun State residents to be tolerant of others with different religious beliefs.
Emphasing the need for all Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the growth and development of the country, Abiodun reaffirmed his commitment to improving the living standards of Ogun people.
He said: “As we celebrate this special season in moderation, let us all have it at the back of our mind that the present economic challenges facing our nation are ephemeral and there is a bigger picture of hope ahead.
“We must support all the reforms embarked upon by President Bola Tinubu towards the revitalisation of our hitherto weak economy and ensure prosperity.
“This is not rocket science as we have begun to see its positive impacts in all sectors,”
Makinde called on Christians to use the Christmas season to pray for the state and Nigeria.
Makinde, who prayed for those mourning the loss of their relatives at a children’s funfair in Ibadan last week, advised people celebrating Christmas to do so responsibly.
He urged residents to report suspicious movements to security agencies through the State Emergency Number 615.
Makinde said: “I wish all Christians and residents of Oyo State a Merry Christmas.
“Christmas presents another opportunity to spread love and to make supplications for our state and our country.
“We should remember those mourning the loss of their children in the recent stampede and pray that God will console them and give them the fortitude to bear the loss.
“I also urge residents of the state to be observant and vigilant at this period. They should report any suspicion to security agencies through 615.
“As we always say, if you see something, say something and the government will do something. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in advance.”
In Calabar, Cross Rivers State, Governor Bassey Otu urged Nigerians to spread love, kindness, and unity in communities as they celebrate the season.
He acknowledged the economic challenges confronting residents of the state, assuring that his administration is planting seeds for an economic turnaround.’’
His words: “We are planting seeds for economic turnaround and significant progress in our state and country.”
Otu assured that sustained governmental policies will yield positive results in the coming year.’’
He also highlighted the importance of unity and love in overcoming challenges.
In his message, Governor Mutfwang called on Christians to embody the values of love, kindness, and generosity as exemplified by Jesus Christ.
He also called on residents to pray for the peace, unity, and progress of the state and Nigeria.

Former Vice-President Abubakar implored Nigerians to be guided by compassion and selflessness.
He urged them to cherish the significance of Christmas as a time for reflection and togetherness.
Atiku also urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to express gratitude for the season despite the many challenges confronting the nation.
He said: “It is a blessing that we can once again celebrate the events leading to the birth of Christ, despite the adversity we face.”
Urging political leaders to make the necessary sacrifices for the nation’s collective good, Atiku also appealed to Nigerians to remain united and embrace one another with love.
“With love and unity, there is no obstacle too great to overcome. Let us, therefore, come together to share love and joy with all people of goodwill,” he added.
Wike urged residents of the FCT to rededicate themselves to God and be law -abiding.
“Since Jesus Christ whose birth is the reason for the celebration of Christmas obeyed the commandments of God, Christians, too, must keep the commandments, especially by showing love to people around us and teaching others to do the same,” Wike said.
His admonition was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.
The minister said “with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, things will keep getting better.”
Wike congratulated FCT residents ‘’for the grace of celebrating another Christmas.’’
He prayed that God to celebrate the season would also ‘’ensure that we all celebrate many more Christmases in good health.’’
The minister also sympathised ‘’with families of victims of the recent stampede in Abuja’’.
Power Minister Adelabu called on Christians and Nigerians to emulate the selfless sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
He also urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the betterment of fellow Nigerians and the country by reflecting on the sacrifice Jesus made to redeem humanity.
Adelabu assured Nigerians of President Tinubu’s commitment to delivering on his Renewed Hope Agenda.
He expressed optimism that Nigerians would soon begin to reap the dividends of democracy.
He said: “On this occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ, this is to wish our Christian brothers and sisters a wonderful celebration.
“Let us all reflect on the sacrifice that the Saviour of the World, made by becoming a mere mortal, in other to redeem us of our sins.
“We are encouraged by this huge and monumental sacrifice of Jesus Christ, to also key into this sacrifice, in giving our support to the economic reforms by President Tinubu.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Isiak Salako, advised Nigerians to expect a better life next year because of the reforms of President Tinubu.
He also urged Nigerians to exercise patience with the government as it tackles the challenges.
Salako gave the encouragement while distributing rice and fertiliser as well as offering medical services in Ayetoro, headquarters of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He said: “On the ground, we have 1,300 bags of rice and 600 bags of fertiliser. Our party members are benefiting 30 percent of the palliatives, and then the market women, whose coordinator is the Iyaloja will also benefit. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Communities will not be left out.
“We will also reach out to individual leaders in the five LGs. Our Baales and traditional rulers are also beneficiaries. What we have done is to at least ensure that representatives of the identified groups are on the ground to receive on behalf of their members.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland urged Christians to emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ.
The attributes, according to the monarch, include love, forgiveness, provision for the needy, tolerance, and peace.
Oba Olakulehin’s message was given at his palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
Stressing the need to love one another, the monarch stated that lack of genuine love amongst citizens was ‘’the bane of our society and indeed the world. ‘’

Ngige, a one time governor of Anambra State, called for prayer for the nation to overcome all its challenges.
According to him, the holiness and solemnity of Christmas also offer an opportunity for quiet reflection by Nigerians on their individual lives and the future of the nation.
Ngige described Christ as good news worth celebrating globally and year after year, regardless of the challenges confronting humanity.
According to him, notwithstanding that Jesus Christ was born under humble circumstances, he remained a phenomenal figure in the history of Christendom and humanity in general.
The former minister urged Christians to emulate Christ and use the period of His birth to show care, compassion, and love to others, especially the less privileged in the society.
The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) called on all Nigerians to prioritise their health during the holiday.
NACA Director General (DG) Ilori, who said Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, stressed thatit also presents an opportunity to make informed and responsible decisions about one’s health.
“We urge everyone to take advantage of the free and confidential HIV testing services available across the country,” Ilori said in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Toyin Aderibigbe.
CDS praises troops’ resilience in anti-terrorism war
CDS Musa urged members of the Armed Forces to use the Christmas period for reflection on the immeasurable love of God for them and members of their families.
Gen.Musa also enjoined them ‘’to ensure the year 2025 is defined by positive changes in the security narratives in all our theatres of operations.”
To other Nigerians, the CDS said they should continue to abide by the teachings of love, forgiveness, and togetherness as exemplified by Jesus Christ.
In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the CDS noted that the birth of Jesus Christ heralded good tidings and hope to the hopeless.
The statement reads : “The CDS noted that the year has been eventful, dotted with few incidents. Despite all these, Almighty God has been gracious and merciful unto us as we are alive to witness another Christmas celebration.
“We do remember with a heavy heart that some of our colleagues who started the year with us, lost their lives in the process of keeping our nation safe from all forms of insecurity occasioned by the activities of terrorists, bandits, and other non-state actors.
“As a mark of respect to our colleagues who paid the supreme price, the CDS urged our troops to ensure the year 2025 is defined by positive changes in the security narratives in all our theatres of operations.” Gen. Musa also acknowledged troops’ resilience, and their will to fight in various theatres of operations across the nation.
He saluted their ‘’courage and sacrifices in securing the lives and prosperity of our dear country,’’ and assured that the Armed Forces would continue to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Prophet Odumeje, the founder of the Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention and Deliverance Ministry, has made a bold statement about the miracles occurring in his church.
With unwavering confidence, he asserted that the miracles are genuine and divine, warning that anyone who attempts to discredit them as staged will face dire consequences.
According to Prophet Odumeje, a woman had previously claimed to be the mastermind behind the miracles in his church, but now, she is dead.
He ominously stated that the same fate awaits others who dare to make similar allegations against him and his church. The prophet’s words were laced with a sense of gravity, as he declared that if his works are proven false, he would shut down his church, also known as The World Miracle Centre.

A Chief Magistrate’s Court 1 sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of an ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; the Chief Executive Officer of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat; and the Principal of Islamic High School, Basorun, Abdullahi Fasasi, at the Agodi Correctional Centre.
After issuing the remand order, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi, adjourned the case till January 13, 2025, meaning that the defendants will spend Christmas and New Year in custody.
The police had arrested them last week after a children’s Christmas funfair they organised in Ibadan turned tragic as 35 children were killed in a stampede.
On Tuesday, the police presented to the court, a case file marked, C/2024: Commissioner of Police Versus Naomi Silekunola ‘f’ 31 years, Oriyomi Hamzat ‘m’ 51 years, and Abdulahi Fasasi, ‘m’, 56 years.
Following their appearance in court, the magistrate said the trio should be remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.
The PUNCH reports that Silekunola; Hamzat, Fasasi alongside others were arrested in connection with last week’s Ibadan funfair stampede which claimed 35 children and six others sustained varying degrees of injury at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan.
Our correspondent gathered that five out of the suspects were released by the police, on Monday night at the state Criminal Investigations Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
Those released included Genesisi Christopher, ‘m” age 24 years; Tanimowo Moruf, ‘m’ 52 years; Anisoloja Olabode, ‘m’ 42 years; Idowu Ibrahim, ‘m’ 35 years and Abiola Oluwatimileyin, ‘m’ 25 years.
Silekunola, Hamzat and Fasasi are facing trial on four counts, bordering on conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm and committing to provide adequate security and medical facilities.
All the suspects were in court in person.
The magistrate later adjourned the case till Monday, January 13, 2025 for mention, urging the DPP to act fast in issuing legal advice.
Unconfirmed reports said Hamzat was arrested on his hospital bed where he was receiving medical attention following his illness in the aftermath of the tragedy that led to the death of 35 children.
During the Tuesday proceedings, counsel for the school principal, Waheed Olajide, raised the issue of jurisdiction, noting that the magistrates’ court cannot adjudicate the offence and as such the defendants should not be arraigned in the court.
According to the senior lawyer, the essence of bringing the suspects to court is to be heard, adding that there was nothing before the court to prove that the suspects committed the alleged offences.
Olajide urged the magistrate to send the defendants back to the police station to of correctional centre.
In his submission, Hamzat’s lawyer, Ridwan Adekunle, told the court that they had a meeting with the Officer-in-Charge Legal, on Monday, where he got an agreement that his client would not be allowed to be taken to a correctional facility but kept in police custody.
But in her ruling, the chief magistrate disagreed with the submissions of the counsel, emphasising her “discretion” to determine the issue.
Justifying the decision, the chief magistrate said, “The police, who brought the suspects to the court, ought to have factored in their health conditions and the circumstances that informed the case itself before bringing them to court and having brought them, I have the responsibility of putting them in a correctional centre, pending the time legal advice would come out from the DPP.”
She added that the legal advice would determine whether or not the suspects have a case to answer.
The magistrate then adjourned the case till Monday, January 13, 2025 for mention and urged the DPP to act fast in making the legal advice available
Meanwhile, some supporters and fans of Hamzat also stormed the court premises but the heavy presence of security operatives within the court saved the situation from getting out of hand.
The supporters, who were visibly angry, protested as the patrol vans conveying the suspects drove out of the court.
In a joyous Christmas gift to civil servants, public servants, and pensioners in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved a N100,000 Christmas bonus for all eligible recipients.
The generous gesture, aimed at enabling the beneficiaries to have a fulfilled Christmas celebration, was announced by the Head of Civil Service, Rivers State, George Nwaeke.
According to Nwaeke, the bonus will be paid to workers in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as pensioners in both the civil and public service.
He said Governor Fubara’s approval of the Christmas bonus is a testament to his administration’s commitment to the well-being and happiness of Rivers people.
The Whistler reports that this is the second time that civil servants in the state will receive a Christmas bonus of N100,000, which is above the nation’s minimum wage.
Notably, this is the first time that pensioners will be included in the bonus payment.
He said “The “Rivers First mantra” of Governor Fubara’s administration is focused on securing the well-being and happiness of Rivers people across various sectors of the economy.
” This Christmas bonus is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
“The bonus payment is expected to bring joy and relief to the beneficiaries, enabling them to celebrate the festive season with their loved ones.
Elder statesman and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has again, accused President Bola Tinubu of inflicting hardship on Nigerians.
George said despite the hardship caused by Tinubu’s economic policies, the President has not shown any concern for the plight of Nigerians.
The former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP lamented that there is so much hunger and anger in the land and there seems to be no respite in site.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday against the recent stampedes in three locations that led to the death of several Nigerians, George said President Tinubu’s policies are only making Nigerians poorer while businesses keep collapsing.
“There is hunger and anger in the land.
“We are not feeling it, it is going worse by the day,” George said.
Commenting on Tinubu’s presidential media chat held on Monday, George said the President’s words lacked any conviction or hope. He described the presidential media chat as a bad way to end the year.
“Hunger doesn’t believe in your talk, you gotta be real.
“I’m surprised that there is no iota of somberness and humanity in the discussion. Why do you have a discussion in the first instance?” he submitted.
Naija News reports the PDP chieftain further asked President Tinubu to reduce the price of petrol and offer palliative to hungry Nigerians affected by his administration’s harsh economic policies.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Bola Tinubu’s comments during his media chat on Monday indicate that he is not worried about the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
In a statement reacting to Tinubu’s first media chat, Debo Ologunagba, PDP spokesperson, said the president is insensitive to the “widespread suffering and hardship” afflicting citizens for saying that he does not regret removing the petrol subsidy.
“The declaration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he has no regrets for the sudden removal of fuel subsidy without any cushioning measures to mitigate the resultant crippling effect on the productive sector, high cost of living, and associated hardship, which is now driving citizens to extreme poverty and early death, also confirms APC’s disconnection from the primary purpose of government, which is the welfare and security of the citizens,” the statement reads.
“It is instructive that President Tinubu in the chat admitted that Nigerians are bearing the brunt of the failure and inability of the APC administration under his watch to effectively police and secure our nation’s borders so as to prevent the smuggling of petroleum products to neighbouring countries.
“The PDP is disturbed that while the APC has failed to account for the proceeds saved from the removal of the subsidy, Nigerians are subjected to crushing economic hardship because the APC administration has failed in its fundamental duty of ensuring the territorial integrity of our nation.”
Ologunagba said rather than “admitting failure and seeking solutions,” Tinubu claimed that the nation’s economy has improved under his watch.
The PDP spokesperson said the economy has worsened with a “comatose productive sector, a deteriorating value of the naira and soaring inflation of 34.6 percent”.
Ologunagba said the stampedes recorded during palliative distribution showed that the nation is “indeed in perilous times under the APC”.
“The PDP holds that there is no hope in sight under the APC given its failure to embark on meaningful investments in critical sectors, including agriculture and food production, electricity, petroleum and gas, and small and medium-scale enterprises, which are the real drivers of the national economy,” he said.
Ologunagba said Tinubu’s assertion that Nigerians can now safely travel by road despite kidnappings on highways is false.
The PDP spokesperson asked the president to travel from Abuja to Lagos by road, visit markets, or walk on the streets to “properly gauge and appreciate the real situation in the country rather than relying on fabricated statistics being bandied by officials of his government”.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has announced a two-week holiday for civil servants in Benue State to commemorate the 2024 Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Makurdi as part of the governor’s Christmas address to the citizens of Benue.
The holiday is set to begin on Tuesday, December 24 and will conclude on January 6, 2025.
Governor Alia indicated that this extended holiday aims to provide workers with the opportunity to celebrate the festive season with their families. He also encouraged them to utilize this time for agricultural activities to enhance food production and combat poverty.
The governor highlighted that essential service providers would create schedules to maintain uninterrupted services throughout the holiday period.
He identified essential service providers as including financial institutions, energy suppliers, security agencies, healthcare facilities, telecommunications, fire services, and the water board, among others.
Alia called upon the people of Benue to continue nurturing a spirit of love and peace while remaining dedicated to the development of a better state. He also extended his wishes for a peaceful and joyful Christmas and New Year celebration.

Military Probe: ‘You Can Move Backward In CBN But You Cannot Do Same In Security’ – Shehu Sani Knocks Tinubu

The former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has berated President Bola Tinubu for saying he is uninterested in probing military spending under his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that Tinubu, during a media chat on Monday, said he would not probe military expenditure under Buhari but would focus on their achievement.
However, in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, Shehu Sani said Tinubu’s decision is tantamount to rewarding larceny and corruption.
According to Sani, Tinubu’s stance was contradictory to his probe of the past activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under embattled apex bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
He said, “When you find yourself in this position, especially with a nation facing these critical issues like ours, you still have to go backward and see how public funds that were looted have been recovered and I think we have been doing that with what has happened in the CBN the last time.
“But when one of the panelists questioned him (Tinubu) about the looting, the mismanagement of security and defense forces under the Buhari administration, which he needs to probe, I think he made it clear that he is more interested in moving forward than moving backward. It’s a bit contradictory; you can move backward in CBN but you can’t move backward in security.
“I believe that what should have been is that if he is being provided with evidence that shows that there are clear cases of corruption, he would move to recover public funds. That is what the answer was supposed to be.
“If you say that whatever happened in the past has gone, it is more like rewarding larceny which he has done by saying he is not going to go back.”
Sani also said that President Tinubu should be held accountable for all his policies and the actions of his ministers since he claimed all his cabinet members are performing.
He added, “He (Tinubu) should be held responsible for what has happened under his government. He has economic reforms. He has started, there are lots of pains, Nigerians are suffering but it is a fact all over the world and in history: economic reforms have never been popular with the citizens.”
President Bola Tinubu says the hike in petrol price forced his friend to abandon his five Rolls-Royce cars for a Honda Accord.
The president spoke on Monday in his first media chat since becoming president on May 29, 2023.
Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidy during his inaugural speech — a move that has resulted in a hike in the price of the product from about N200 to over N900 across the country.
Speaking on the situation, Tinubu advised Nigerians to “learn to manage”, adding that prudence is “not negative”.
“People are learning management. A friend used to brag to me that he has five Rolls Royce. The other day I saw him in his Honda Accord. He said that’s where you put me. I told him ‘I did not put you there’,” the president said.
“But he said it was because of fuel prices that he could no longer maintain five limousine-type vehicles. It is not negative to learn to manage. Switch off the light to control your electricity bill. Let us learn to manage.”
Tinubu appointed 48 ministers — the highest since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999.
Despite criticisms, the president said he will not be downsizing his cabinet.
Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, says the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited’s $1 billion investment in the refinery is a drop in the ocean.
On December 16, NNPC said its $1 billion crude-backed loan was instrumental in supporting the refinery during liquidity challenges.
Responding, Dangote refinery denied experiencing liquidity challenges when the national oil company invested $1 billion to support the plant’s construction.
In an Arise TV documentary video on Monday, the billionaire said the contribution was a fragment of investments in the refinery.
“In 2021, when we signed the agreement, even if you give us $1 billion, $1 billion is a drop in the ocean in a $20 billion refinery,” Dangote said.
“When NNPC said ‘give us one more year, we want to change the agreement, we would rather pay you cash,’ because people don’t really understand this issue about $2 deduction on the crude.
“Can we make sure that there’s clarity around it? So what do you want? So they said they would pay us cash, and we should give them one more year.
“We gave them one more year. So from June last year to June this year. So on June 4th or 5th, I called NNPC and they gave us a week.”
Dangote said sometime later, the NNPC decided to back out of the transaction abruptly when the payment was due.
“I said, okay, fine. We just walked away and we just continued. But we still went ahead, we finished our refinery. Our refinery is operating,” he said.
Speaking further, Dangote said it is very “cheeky and nasty for the person who ever came up with that nonsense, saying that NNPC gave us $1 billion to assist us in our liquidity crisis”.
He added that “it’s totally not true; these are just a bunch of lies”.
In September 2021, NNPC acquired a 20 percent interest in Dangote refinery for $2.76 billion.
NNPC paid $1 billion upfront in cash, with a balance of $1.76 billion expected to be paid for in crude supplies.
However, on July 14, Dangote said the national oil company now owns 7.2 percent stake in the refinery.
On August 13, NNPC confirmed it reduced the stake to invest in compressed natural gas (CNG).
‘WHY DANGOTE REFINERY REDUCED EX-DEPOT PETROL PRICE TO N899.50’
Speaking on why the Dangote refinery reduced the ex-depot petrol price to N899.50, Dangote said it was a response to market realities.
“It is a refinery where we invested over $20 billion and I think we have to try and protect our interests and also our investments,” the business tycoon said.
On December 19, the Dangote refinery reduced the ex-depot price of its petrol to N899.50 per litre.
Similarly, the refinery partnered with MRS Oil Nigeria Plc filling stations to sell petrol at N935 per litre.
‘WHY I ADVOCATE FOR DOMESTIC PRODUCTION’
Dangote said when the country imports petroleum products, there is more pressure on foreign exchange (FX).
“40 percent of our demand on foreign exchange is through people dealing in petroleum products and the more we allow imports to come in — not because I do not want imports — the more we keep using most of our foreign exchange out of the country,” he said.
“Majority of those letters of credit open for petroleum products, the goods are not coming into Nigeria.
“There is nothing you would do that you won’t get criticism for. But I think we cannot also control people from saying their minds.”
Dangote reiterated that he was open to criticism, adding that in the history of Nigeria, in the last 100 years, “nobody has put in $20 billion in any project”.
The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has rejected a request by Emmanuel Chambers, Afe Babalola’s law firm, to disbar Dele Farotimi, a human rights advocate, for alleged unethical conduct.
The firm had written a 90-page petition dated December 6, 2024, and signed by Ola Faro, a partner in the firm, to the LPDC.
In the petition, the firm accused Farotimi of engaging in “conduct that is unbecoming of a legal practitioner, by making false accusations against the supreme court and the legal profession”.
Faro said Farotimi’s book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,’ discredited the nation’s judiciary and judges.
In its report, (B8B/LPDC/1571/2024), the LPDC, represented by Isaq Bello, its chairman, said the alleged offenses occurred in Farotimi’s capacity as an author, not during his practice as a legal professional.
The LPDC said it lacked jurisdiction to address complaints about publications and advised the aggrieved parties to seek redress in regular courts.
“The publication is an intellectual property and not a conduct or action committed while practicing as a legal practitioner. All aggrieved parties who find the publication ‘defamatory’ should ventilate their grievances through the regular courts,” the report reads.
Meanwhile, Farotimi was released from the correctional centre in Ekiti state on Tuesday morning after perfecting his bail conditions.
On December 9, the federal high court in Ekiti granted Farotimi N50 million bail with one surety, following a 12-count charge bordering on cybercrime filed by the inspector-general of police.
