The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced notable reductions in new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths across Africa, marking a significant milestone in the continent's fight against the epidemic. 

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti, shared this in her statement on Friday, November 29, to commemorate World AIDS Day under the theme, “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right.”

Dr. Moeti highlighted a critical shift in global HIV trends, noting that for the first time in 2023, the number of new HIV infections was higher outside sub-Saharan Africa. She pointed out that the African region is leading globally in progress towards achieving the 95-95-95 UNAIDS targets for HIV testing, treatment, and viral suppression, which aim to bridge gaps in treatment coverage and outcomes.

“Seven countries have already achieved the targets, with the overall rating for the region currently at 90-82-76. About 21.3 million people are now on antiretroviral treatment, raising their life expectancy. Botswana (silver tier status) and Namibia (bronze tier status) have both been recognized for notably curbing mother-to-child HIV transmission rates, achieving the required indicators for the ‘Path to the elimination of HIV’ criteria introduced in 2017,” Dr Moeti said.

The region has also made significant strides in implementing biomedical HIV prevention methods, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Countries are rapidly adopting oral and long-acting injectable PrEP and the dipivefrine vaginal ring to ensure broader accessibility to prevention options.

Despite these achievements, Dr. Moeti emphasized the need to address lingering challenges. She cautioned that the value of scientific advancements and tools depends on their universal accessibility, calling for increased investments and policy reforms.

“We have a collective obligation to protect human rights, specifically ensuring that health care is available to everyone, without any discrimination, regardless of their HIV status, background, gender or where they live. Stigma and discrimination cannot be allowed to undermine the gains and impede our progress,” she stated.

Dr. Moeti also stressed the importance of community involvement in shaping strategies and implementing interventions to overcome human rights-related barriers to care. “We must ensure their voices are heard,” she said.

However, the HIV response faces complications from the rising incidence of disease outbreaks in Africa, which strain already burdened health systems. Dr. Moeti underscored the urgency of accelerating the response to the epidemic, emphasizing the need for strong health systems and integrated, person-centred approaches to health care to meet the needs of vulnerable populations.

“Let’s take this opportunity today to acknowledge the progress, but to also renew our joint commitment to eliminating HIV. By protecting everyone’s right to health, and reducing new HIV infections, we can achieve an AIDS-free generation and ensure the sustainability of the HIV response,” she added.

Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen has pledged to bring European glory to his Turkish club, Galatasaray.

Osimhen made the statement on Thursday night, November 28, following Galatasaray’s  1-1 draw against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League.

The former Lille striker, who played in the clash, scored a crucial equaliser in the 43rd minute after the Dutch side had taken an early lead.

Despite the game ending in a draw, Osimhen assured fans of his commitment to help them bring the  UEFA Cup to Turkey.

Speaking to Parçalı Sportz, a prominent Turkish sports media outlet on X, Osimhen said, “I said I would score a goal, and I did. I promise you one more thing; I will bring the UEFA Cup to Turkey.”

Justice T.G. Ringin of the Federal High Court sitting in Gombe, Gombe State has convicted and sentenced two police officers: Yusuf AbdulKarim Bature and Musa Philip and an Immigration officer, Nasiru Mohammed to seven years imprisonment each for employment fraud to the tune of N1.640,000.

The trio were sentenced on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. 

Bature and Philip were arraigned on two count - charges of obtaining by false pretences and intent to defraud while Mohammed was arraigned on one- count charge of obtaining by false pretences by the Gombe Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Count one of the charges against Yusuf AbdulKarim Bature and Musa Philip reads : “That you Yusuf Abdul karim Bature and Musa Philip while being public officers with the Nigerian Police Force sometime in 2022 in Gombe within the Gombe Judicial division at the Federal High Court of Justice did with intent to defraud falsely obtained from one Asabe Hamed the total sum of Nine Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira for the purpose of securing a job, a claim you knew to be false”.

The charge against Nasiru Mohammed reads: “that you Nasiru Mohammed sometime in 2022 in Gombe within the jurisdiction of this honourable court while being a staff of the Nigerian Immigration Service did falsely obtained the sum of Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand naira (N670,000) from Abdul Rahman Abubakar and Akwalo Adamu under the false pretence of securing them a job with the Nigerian Immigration Service which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”

Upon arraignment the defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

In view of their guilty pleas, prosecution counsel Tortema Joshua prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendants accordingly but counsels to the defendants, Babangida Mohammed and K.K. Jomoh pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendants were first -time offenders who are remorseful of their actions.

Justice Ringing thereafter convicted and sentenced Bature, Philip and Mohammed to seven years imprisonment each or a fine of N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) each.

In addition, the judge ordered the convicts to pay restitution of N1,640,000 to the petitioners and sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour henceforth.

The convicts' journey to the Correctional Centre began sometime in February 8, 2024 when some petitioners alleged that Bature and Philip collected N970,000 while Mohammed collected N670,000 as payment for employment slots. 

The convicts neither offered the petitioners the jobs nor returned their money to them.

The Federal Government has begged medical practitioners in the country against relocating to foreign countries, urging them to stay back and serve their fatherland. 
 

The plea came Thursday, Nov. 28, as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, inducted over 600 foreign trained medical and dental graduates. 

 

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammad Pate, insisted that medical practitioners must remain in the country to “build a better image for the health sector and build our nation. 

“I must say this, please don’t japa, let’s do this together and build a better image for the health sector and build our nation,” Prof. Pate,who was represented at the event by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ms. Kachollom Daju, said. 
 

The minister added: “You have all journeyed from your various homes to pursue education abroad, overcoming not only academic challenges, but also cultural, emotional and logistical hurdles. Your experience both in the classroom and in the field have equipped you with unique skills and characteristics that will enhance your practice of medicine or dentistry. 

“It is obvious that this is a special moment for you and your family, friends, mentors and those who have supported you along the way. 

“Your achievements reflect their support, sacrifices and faith in your potential. I will also like to extend my appreciation to the universities, institutions and most especially the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria that provided the educational foundation for your growth and ensuring compliance to the prescribed guidelines. 

“Today, dear doctors, as we take the Hippocratic oath, you are making a solemn commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards in your practice. 

“The chairman has already ruled out some of the points for you that you need to work on as doctors. Commitment, humility, service to patients and what the empathy and compassion is, amongst other things. 

“The political sector for the government and health is moving towards quality care, safe care, safety of people. Because through the years, the health sector in Nigeria has been inundated with a lot of citizens complaining about the state of our health care system. Now we have over 600 of you being doctors today and you are coming into this space that is very critical to our nature of journey. 

“Therefore, you are pledging to serve humanity with compassion, integrity and a deep sense of responsibility. We now hope that your work will directly impact the lives and well-being of your people. Because the trust that society places on you is immense and you see the responsibility that you must challenge with the utmost seriousness and professionalism. 

“Let us not forget that as health care professionals, you are constantly called upon to demonstrate empathy, resilience and adaptability. 

“The world of medicine and dentistry is ever-evolving and so too must you evolve, whether it be through innovating new technologies, taking a breath in the latest new technology, or adapting to the needs of a diverse population. The future of our planet abroad will serve as a foundation for the lifelong commitment to many alike. 

“As we embark on this new chapter, I urge you to approach your profession with the same passion and determination that brought you to this point. Furthermore, to advocate your patients, who are always seeking their health care, remember that every patient you see with a personal report is safe and is in good health. Approach each case with the same level of care and commitment, no matter where you are in the world, because we need you too. 

“And I must say this, please don’t Japa, let’s do this together and build a better image for the health sector and build our nation.”

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has called for the withdrawal of the tax reform bills.

According to Zulum, the bill transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in September, will drag the northern part of the country backward.

The bill has faced opposition from Northern governors, traditional rulers, and Northern Elders Forum.

However, despite the rejections, the Senate passed the bills for second reading on Thursday despite rowdiness at plenary.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa service, the governor expressed displeasure over how the bills enjoyed speedy and smooth passage to the current phase when other bills had to spend several years to scale through.

He said, “We condemn these bills transmitted to the National Assembly. They will drag the north backward, and not only the north, South East, South West and some states in the South West such as Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, will have problem with these bills.

“It is not opposition. This, based on our understanding, is something that will destroy the north in its entirety. Therefore, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others to review this decision. He secured 60% of his votes in the north. He should not listen to those telling him that northerners are not supporting him. If our interest is served, that is all. What we need now is the withdrawal of the tax bills.

“Why all the rush! There’s a petroleum bill that was presented but it took almost 20 years before it was finally passed. But this one was transmitted and now receiving legislative attention within a week. What we are saying is that, let it be treated carefully and with caution so that even after our exit, our children would reap the benefits.

“How we see it is, if these bills scale through, we will not be able to even pay salaries. And if we paid, it won’t be sustainable the following year.”

Asked whether the bills would further exacerbate hunger and poverty in the north, Zulum answered in the affirmative, adding, “Including security. But they’re saying otherwise. We are against it, Lagos is against it; that it will drag it backwards. If this is the situation, then why won’t they rescind it? Our National Assembly members and even some from the Southern region are not in support of these bills.”

The governor, however, clarified that his objection of the bills was not a pointer of any opposition against the government, maintaining that it was only a call to reverse the decision.

He said, “This is our stand and doesn’t mean that we are against the government. We supported and voted for him (President Tinubu). But these bills will not mean good for us.”

Asked to comment on whether the lawmakers would pass the bills when lobbied and given kickbacks, Zulum said, “There are rumours around but we are not certain. But you know we are in Nigeria! What I am saying is that let us all be patriotic. We have children, grandchildren and relatives who are in villages, therefore, we should be careful not to endorse anything that would impede the progress of the north and other regions. We are appealing to the President to listen to us and address our concerns.”

The appeal court sitting in Lagos has nullified the rape conviction against the Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Dr Olufemi Olaleye.

Olaleye had filed an appeal challenging his conviction and sentence on a two count charge of defilement and sexual assault by penetration of a minor.

Recalls that in October 2023, Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court had sentenced Dr Olaleye to life imprisonment for defiling his wife’s 16-year-old niece.

In his judgment, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, had proved the charge against the defendant and that the evidence against him was compelling.

According to the judge, Olaleye’s confessional statement before his former counsel, Mr Olalekan Buruji, and the Divisional Police Officer at the Anthony Police Station, Lagos State, proved that he committed the offences.

The judge held that Olaleye said in the statement that he regretted his act.

The judge also held that Olaleye’s denial of the statement during trial did not hold water.

However, the appellate court on Friday held that the lower court erred in its judgment.

The appeal court thereafter discharged and acquitted Olaleye.

President Bola Tinubu has said the economic reforms of his administration would impact Africa and boost the continent’s economy.

President Tinubu also hailed the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, for his interest in Africa’s growth and development, expressing confidence that Macron’s goodwill would foster stronger bilateral ties, benefiting the entire continent.

He stated this at the State Dinner organized by the French government for Tinubu at Palais des Elysée in Paris on Thursday night.

Tinubu encouraged both Nigerian and French citizens to uphold the cordial relationship shared by their nations.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu accompanied the President to the dinner, along with Nigerian government officials, businessmen, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

“It is a great honour for me to be here. And it’s been a great day because you have arranged a great reception.

“Appreciating that you have a good knowledge of Nigeria is not enough. Your warmth, your commitment, and your foresight in Africa are remarkable.

You open your doors for investment for our friends and brothers here. I could see Aliko Dangote, Aig Imoukhuede, and Tony Elumelu here. You have memories of your friends in Nigeria. You asked for Mike Adenuga earlier today. Thank you,” he stated.

President Tinubu noted that the future remained bright for better relations with France.

“It is a good time for all of us. I cannot be prouder than I am to be President of Nigeria at this challenging time. I have people who are very clearly inspired, who are determined to change the course of Africa by changing the rot of the past, blending a future that our children and grandchildren can hold, and be open, and be proud,” he said.

President Tinubu stated that the reforms in Nigeria would improve Africa’s economic prospects.

“Regarding Nigeria’s economy, as you have said, we have embarked on a very strong reform, and there is no looking back. It is in the interest of the entire continent that we don’t continue in the past. We must brace up for the future with commitment and optimism. And with the courage of our founding fathers.

“President Macron, all your efforts about Africa, I promise you shall not be in vain,” he added.

In his remarks, President Macron acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership in Africa, recognizing its role as a ‘big brother’ to the continent.

He praised Nigerians for their resilience and intellect, mentioning Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and musician Femi Kuti as global figures.

“Nigeria is a formidable country with talented young people. Many Nigerians are exceptional in their chosen careers.

“You conquered military rule and took your liberty. President Tinubu transformed the economy in Lagos, and now you are on a mission to transform the country,” Macron said.

Macron noted that French investors have long been active in Nigeria, particularly in oil, gas, construction, and food security.

He also highlighted opportunities in solid minerals, emerging technologies, and the film industry.

“Nigeria and France will continue to lead together, forging a path forward,” President Macron concluded.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is poised to reinstate the contentious $300 landing fee imposed on helicopter operators in the country.

During the ongoing 53rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) in Kano, Tayo John, the Director of Air Traffic Services at NAMA, remarked that reinstating the fee would alleviate the agency’s current financial challenges.

Naija News reports that his submission follows the federal government’s six-month fee suspension, a decision taken in response to protests from airline operators.

It could be recalled that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, had previously engaged NAEBI Dynamic Concept to oversee the collection of this fee.

In May 2024, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the suspension of the $300 landing fee for helicopter operators.

He indicated that further decisions regarding the fee would be made after a review committee submits its findings for evaluation.

In his presentation titled ‘Financial Constraints Affecting Nigeria’s Air Navigation Provision: Impact and Mitigation Strategies,’ John explained that the Federal Government had urged the agency to suspend the fee shortly after its initial implementation.

He did, however, mention that NAMA is developing a framework to resume the collection of the levy from helicopters operating at oil rig platforms and private helipads throughout the country. The director did not specify when the agency would recommence the collection of this fee.

He said: “In the next few weeks, we will recommence the collection of $300 landing fee from helicopter operators. We started earlier, but the government directed us to suspend it then due to some issues in the country then, but this time around, we will resume the collection.”

John, in his paper, further highlighted the substantial costs associated with providing navigation aids, Air Traffic Management (ATM) equipment, and maintaining the necessary workforce at NAMA.

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has given more explanations on why the northern region and some other stakeholders are against the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, the tax reforms would only benefit Lagos State and bring backwardness to the North.

Speaking during an interview with BBC News Hausa, Governor Zulum added that not only the north would be negatively affected, but also to the South East, South South, and South West.

In his view, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo will also have problems.

He added that some supporters of the bill are of the opinion that the proposed bill could put Lagos at a disadvantage; but according to him, if that is the case, they do not wish for any such disadvantages to affect Lagos State.

Zulum, therefore, urged President Tinubu to revisit the tax reform bills in light of the fact that he received 60% of his votes from the northern region.

The Governor advised the President that he should ignore voices suggesting that the northern population does not support him as that perception is inaccurate.

The Borno Governor emphasized that all they want is for him to withdraw the tax reform bills.

The position of Governor Zulum comes at a time when the Senate has advanced the Tax Reform Bills to second reading amidst the opposition against it and controversies it has already generated.

Naija News gathered that the bills passed second reading after the majority leader of the senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, led a debate on them on Thursday.
