Buku Abi, the daughter of disgraced R&B singer, R. Kelly, has spoken out publicly for the first time about the alleged abuse that she suffered during her childhood at the hands of her own father.

In a two-episode documentary Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, which premiered today, October 11, Abi, 26, claims she was abused by her father as a child, and she first reported it to her mother Andrea in 2009, when she was 10 years old.

“He was my everything. For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person he would do something to me,” she says in the documentary, the first episode of which is streaming now.

“I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom.”

Though Abi, who was born Joann Kelly, does not go into detail about the alleged abuse in the first episode, she says that she believes jail is a “well-suited place” for Kelly, 57, to be, as she knows from her “personal experience.”

“I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry,” she says. “After I told my mom, I didn’t go over there anymore; my brother [Robert] and sister [Jaah], we didn’t go over there anymore. And even up until now, I struggle with it a lot.”

In the second episode, Buku goes into more detail about the alleged abuse, which she says happened when she was 8 or 9.

"I just remember waking up to him touching me," she recalls, crying. "And I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep."

Buku says she eventually told her mother what happened, and they went to the police and filed a complaint as "Jane Doe," but, she adds in the documentary, "They couldn’t prosecute him because I waited too long. So at that point in my life, I felt like I said something for nothing."

In a statement to People, Kelly's attorney Jennifer Bonjean said, "Mr. Kelly vehemently denies these allegations. His ex-wife made the same allegation years ago, and it was investigated by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and was unfounded.... And the 'filmmakers,' whoever they are, did not reach out to Mr. Kelly or his team to even allow him to deny these hurtful claims."

In February 2023, Kelly was sentenced in Chicago to 20 years in prison on charges of child pornography and enticement of minors for s*x. The year prior, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for racketeering and s*x trafficking charges based out of New York. He's currently serving 19 years of his two sentences concurrently, and he will be eligible for release in 2045.

The Anambra State Ministry of Health has uncovered an illegal wine factory that was producing a variety of exotic drinks while counterfeitng authentic products.

The ministry, working in collaboration with a state paramilitary Agency, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, codenamed OCHA BRIGADE arrested seven persons at Nkpor, near Onitsha, sealing off their premises.

Daily Post reports that the officers of OCHA Brigade raided the fake manufacturing company, which specialized in the mass production of fake wines and other exotic drinks in the State.

The fake wine company was said to have over the years produced and distributed several types of fake and unapproved wines in large quantities and distributed for general consumption.

Nigeria is facing a worsening food security crisis, with over one million additional people experiencing severe food insecurity in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to a report by the World Bank. 

The recently released Food Security Update Report highlights that countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia and Yemen have seen a significant rise in the number of people facing acute food shortages.

“Conversely, some countries saw improvements. Nations such as Afghanistan, Guatemala, and Kenya reported declines in food insecurity, with more than one million fewer people facing acute food crises, although these countries remained in significant food crisis situations,” the report read.

“On the other hand, 18 countries experienced worsening situations due to factors including intensified conflict and climate-related shocks, such as droughts. Notable examples include Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Yemen, each witnessing an increase of more than one million people facing high levels of food insecurity from the previous year”.

The report attributes Nigeria’s growing crisis to a combination of climate-induced issues and socio-political instability in various regions.

“In Nigeria, an estimated 1.6 million hectares of land have been inundated, including 342,650 hectares of cropland, affecting 685,770 vulnerable individuals. In Mali, 344,000 people were affected and 1.6 million hectares of land flooded, including nearly 500,000 hectares of cultivated land,” the report noted.

“Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo have also faced flooding, and northern and northeastern Nigeria and Ghana are experiencing dry spells, with adverse effects on crop production and thus food insecurity.

“In total, floods and droughts have affected approximately 3.5 million people, who require emergency support. It is estimated that $50m is needed to help 760,200 communities meet their basic food needs.”

The report further reveals that domestic food price inflation in Nigeria remains among the highest globally, with food prices increasing by 37.5% year-on-year as of August 2024. This price surge has strained household incomes, making it increasingly difficult for low-income families to afford basic food items.

The bank called for urgent intervention to address the immediate food needs of affected populations.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed the United Kingdom for Paris, France, where he is expected to attend an “important engagement” after spending over a week in the UK.

The Senior Special Assistant on Political and other matters to the president, Ibrahim Kabir Masari disclosed this on Friday through his X account.

“Today, I had the honor of visiting President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR at his private residence in the United Kingdom, where we engaged in productive discussions.

“We then departed for Paris, France, for another important engagement”, Masari said.

Meanwhile, details of the engagement were not made public.

DAILY POST recalls that President Tinubu departed Nigeria on Wednesday, October 2, for a two-week working vacation in the UK, as part of his annual leave.

The President’s vacation comes despite the pervasive economic hardship Nigerians are facing.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited had increased the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to N1,030 per litre, further worsening the hardship on Nigerians.

The former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has condemned the recent increase in fuel price, calling on the Federal Government to reverse the sudden petrol price hike.

The former Anambra State Governor stated this in a post on his X handle on Saturday morning.

Recall that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced a 14.8% hike in the price of petrol raising it to ₦1,030 per litre from ₦897.

This marks the second petrol price increase within the past month, following a previous rise in September when the price surged from ₦615 to ₦897 per litre.

Reacting, Peter Obi described the latest increase as unfortunate and insensitive.

He called on President Bola Tinubu, who doubles as the Minister of Petroleum, to provide full explanation, offer alternative options, and most importantly, reverse the sudden price hike.

Peter Obi wrote: “As Nigerians continue to groan under extremely difficult economic conditions, largely caused by the Federal Government’s wrong policy choices, the NNPCL has once again raised the price of fuel (PMS) without providing any explanation.

“This is both unfortunate and insensitive, considering the wide-ranging negative consequences for our economic survival and well-being.

“This is neither how an economy’s resources should be managed nor how a nation should be governed. In this new measure, there is neither sound economics nor necessary compassion.

“We are told that the NNPCL is now a limited liability company, regulated by agencies such as the NUPRC and NMDPRA, yet there seems to be growing confusion about the roles and responsibilities of the NNPCL and these regulating bodies.

“Interestingly, both the NNPCL and the regulatory agencies are supposed to be under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria serving as the substantive Minister. Who, in this arrangement, is regulating who?

“With the unprecedented but avoidable hardship that Nigerians are enduring, the responsibility for providing a full explanation, offering alternative options, and most importantly, reversing the sudden price hike falls squarely on the Honorable Minister of Petroleum Resources/President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We hope and pray that he acts in the best interest of the majority of Nigerians, who are living under unnecessarily precarious conditions, and that he does so before his return from his working vacation.

“To casually inflict such a draconian measure on the populace from the comfort of an annual vacation amounts to taking the people’s welfare lightly and for granted.

“A New and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed Possible!”

Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, has unveiled a golden statue of Oluremi Tinubu at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in honour of the first lady.

The unveiling, which took place on Thursday, was part of activities to mark the 50th birthday anniversary of the monarch.

He also commissioned a 2.7km road and a hostel named after the first lady.

“In recognition of her contributions, we have erected a golden statue to immortalize her virtues as a teacher, mother, and wife at the heart of Obafemi Awolowo University. Additionally, we built a state-of-the-art hostel, whose dynamic pavilion reflects her progressive nature,” Ooni said.

“The 2.7-kilometer road, equipped with solar-powered street lamps, will now be known as Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way. This road symbolizes the many paths she has opened for youth, women, and the underprivileged in our society. The hostel and pavilion, the largest in the university’s history, stand as a testament to her commitment to creating spaces for learning, development, and empowerment for all.”

Oluremi thanked the Ooni for the gesture and announced a donation of N1 billion for the restoration of the “horticultural landscape” of the university.

“The campus used to be beautiful when I was here. Ife is crying out for help. It used to be a beautiful campus, and the beauty must be restored,” she said.

Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has hit out at Libya for ‘over-respecting’ his team during both sides’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON, qualifier on Friday.

The Mediterranean Knights frustrated Eguavoen’s men with their delay tactics for the majority of the game.

However, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 86 minutes goal gave the Super Eagles a 1-0 victory over Libya.

Speaking about Libya’s time-wasting, Eguavoen said at his post-match interview: “We have a time keeper also in the name of Thomas.

“Actually they wasted like fourteen, fifteen minutes out of the 45 minutes which is not so good.

“They are a good side. You can see that they move the ball if they wanted to move, but now trying to bring such strategies, I don’t think it’s a good thing.

“Maybe they over-respected us. They thought probably if they come out at the initial stage they are going to get a lot of goals behind them. I don’t know if that is the way they want to play.”

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scored the winner as Nigeria defeated Libya 1-0 in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday.

The Group D encounter was a game of missed chances, gamesmanship from the Libyans and poor officiating by the referees but Dele-Bashiru proved the hero the Eagles needed with his late strike.

Coach Austin Eguavoen switched to a 4-3-3 with Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface leading the attack alongside Moses Simon.

The Super Eagles had the first chance of the encounter when the Libya goalkeeper was forced into a save by Alex Iwobi. The team continued to have the upper hand but failed to make it count as William Troost-Ekong, the Eagles captain, fired wide from a rebound, following a save off Frank Onyeka’s shot.

Iwobi was then expertly denied by a point-blank save as both teams went into the interval on level terms.

Iwobi continued to enter the box at the right time but his finishing was abysmal, with the 27-year-old heading high and wide from six yards out before blazing a half-volley wide minutes later as Nigeria probed the Libyans more on the right wing.

The Libyans settled into time-wasting routine but Lookman found the back of the net with a low shot after exchanging passes but he was deemed offside despite replays showing otherwise.

Nigeria scored minutes later when Dele-Bashiru fired into the far corner from centre of the box off Simon’s pass from the wing, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot while fans celebrated wildly.

The goal ensured Eguavoen’s side secured all three points to put them closer to qualification.

Victory takes Nigeria to seven points on the log from three matches, leading group D at the halfway mark of the qualification series.

The Super Eagles travel to Benghazi to face the Libyans on matchday four on October 15.

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, has refuted recent claims regarding internal rifts within the opposition party.

The Governor of Bauchi State made this remark following a series of suspensions within the party leadership on Friday.

Naija News reported earlier that the PDP crisis escalated on Friday morning with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) division.

A faction of the PDP loyal to the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had, in a statement on Friday morning, announced the suspension of its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN).

The PDP National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, made this known in a statement issued in the early hours of Friday.

Subsequently, another faction, in a statement issued by Ologunagba, suspended Damagum, the national chairman of the PDP.

Nevertheless, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order preventing the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP from ousting Umar Damagum as the acting national chairman.

Justice Peter Lifu ruled that only Damagum should be acknowledged as the PDP national chairman until the party’s national convention, which is set for December 2025.

It is worth noting that the crisis rocking the PDP started after the party’s presidential primary polls ahead of the 2023 election.

However, following a private meeting with PDP stakeholders at the Government House in Bauchi on Friday, Governor Mohammed reiterated that the party remains united and is committed to constructively resolving its internal issues.

The PDP Governors’ Forum chairman said: “I would say that we have met and discussed these situations extensively with the acting National Chairman and we have agreed to work together along with other party organs—the BOT, members of the Governors’ Forum, caucuses of the Senate and the House—to resolve all these issues and that is the major takeaway of this visit.

“We will deepen stakeholding and collaboration so that all these issues that are disparaging the members of the party will be resolved and nipped in the bud.”

“We have decided that henceforth, we will not allow a gap, and we will make sure that we resolve all these issues.

“We are not recognizing any faction; we are together as a body, and definitely, at the end of the day, we will resolve all issues.”

Mohammed confirmed that the PDP is diligently addressing its internal challenges by fostering collaboration among essential party stakeholders.

He emphasized that the ultimate decision is not solely his responsibility but involves other members who are stakeholders within the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Board of Trustees (BOT), the caucus, and other senior party officials.

Additionally, he mentioned that discussions with his fellow PDP governors are currently being held to ascertain the forthcoming actions.

“This has been a productive outing, and I am assured that the party will come together to resolve all contending issues. We have agreed, in the presence of other stakeholders, that we will do whatever it takes to restore the party’s glory so it can achieve victory in the 2027 elections,” Mohammed declared.

Nollywood actor cum politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will choose the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2027 if Julius Abure continues as national chairman.

Naija News reports that Okonkwo made this known in an interview on Arise TV.

He described Abure’s leadership approach as transactional politics, stressing that the LP, as presently constituted, is now a ‘housemaid’ to the ruling APC.

The movie star, who served as LP’s presidential campaign spokesperson in the 2023 elections, recounted how Abure withdrew the tickets earlier reserved for the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi and  Abia governor, Alex Otti, ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said, “In a nation like Nigeria, where the ruling party is looking for any way to make sure they compromise the opposition, you do not have the leisure of time.

“I can tell you that Labour Party as presently constituted is now a housemaid to APC. The 2027 presidential candidate of the Labour Party will be decided on the table of APC.

“We know their moves. They are meeting the people now who help people to win cases in court.

“Because if nobody from your party is supporting you, then who are you now trying to become a chairman to?

“Remember, when Abure went to Nnewi to do the illegal election, in my own view (because) the supreme court has not ruled. He said the ticket is reserved for Peter Obi.

“I said in this programme back then that this is bribery; that he wants to use it to make Peter Obi to close his eyes on the illegality they’re doing.

“When their tenure ended, it was not even Peter Obi that said their tenure has ended. It was INEC, and they were disgraced out.

“That comes to the culpability of INEC; if INEC said their tenure has ended, why did they not accept the caretaker committee?

“Now, when Peter Obi went to Umuahia to do the right thing, what did Abure say? No, the ticket is no longer reserved.

“What does that tell you? These are transactional politicians who have no policy, who have no principle, but what they are doing there is to trade.

“He said, Otti, we don’t have ticket for you. Who do you think they are reserving the ticket for? Let me give you a poser.

“The deputy speaker of the national assembly told Otti, look, I would not sit down as a man of the ruling party and allow the opposition to govern Abia state.

“And then there is an Abure that is saying that ticket is no longer reserved for you and they are winning cases in court.

“The witch cried in the night and the baby died in the day. What do you think is happening? It’s not an indictment, he said it openly but I can see the nexus.

“Every ticket in the Labour Party is reserved for APC people and I have told you about the nexus. It’s not by accident.”
