Nigerians are well known for the tradition of giving alms to the needy.

Many people believe that the needy, particularly beggars, are angels sent to test their act of giving.

Others believe that when the barren gives to those with children, she will give birth to children of her own, while most people believe that giving the needy will release God’s blessings upon them.

However, these beliefs are gradually dying.

Many Nigerians are no longer giving alms, due to the declining standard of living.

Economy&Lifestyle discovered that the development has made most roadside beggars, who are known to quit begging by 5 p.m., now extend their routine till late night, to meet their daily targets.

Hauwa Garba, a mother of three who begs for a living, said: “People hardly give us money nowadays. I have been begging since 2018.

“Then people will give N500, N200, clothes, food for myself and children.

“Now, people don’t even look at you or the children. The act of giving has reduced a lot.
“The highest denomination I received today was N100.

“Even the sharing of food packs hardly happens now and when it does the packs contain little quantity unlike before when you have a lot to eat and even waste.

“It is even difficult to see them give basic necessities such as clothes, drugs, tissue paper, pampers and so on as it was a routine then.

“They now give these items to people closer to them.
“I don’t blame them but the poor economy.

“So to meet up with footing my bills, I beg till late night. “This is because I pay for the space I retire to after begging. There are very many of us living there and everyone must pay their share of the rent.”

In Nigeria, there are various grades of beggars and each category sticks to a particular belief of the various cultural backgrounds in the country.

There are beggars with children, there are the old, those who are handicapped and some that you meet on the street seeking financial help or food for survival, there are beggars seeking help to resolve medical issues among others.

On his part, Dogo Kubure, a handicapped in his 40’s, said he started closing by 9 p.m. after heeding the advice of a fellow beggar to extend their begging time to meet up with their target.

“This is a very hard time for beggars like me because those who are physically complete find it hard to provide for their daily life compared to us.

“Before, I went home with at least N1,000 daily apart from the various food items people gave me.
“Now, I hardly go home with N500.

“Today, I made just N200. This is to show you the extent how which the economy has reduced our benefactors.
“I have to stay out late after heeding the advice of my friend who is also a beggar but old.
“People always give the handicapped and old mostly. But now, both categories of beggars are not even pitied by many.

“If I can’t meet up with my needs in the city anymore, I will go back to my village before the year ends.”
Confirming the reduction in giving alms to roadside beggars, Miss Mercy Udechukwu, a skincare seller said she has stopped giving beggars money on the street and decided to give the little she can spare to members of her family that is struggling to survive.

“In a day up to two to three people in my family are seeking financial help.

“Sometimes I promise to give them and I fulfil my promise. “Other times I just tell them I am also struggling.

“Before, in a week I give beggars up to N1,000 when I go out. Some even come in groups to my shop to solicit financial help.

“But now, I don’t give them because I am struggling to survive and the little I can spare I give to my family who are also in need.”

Mr. Matthew Bankole, a surveyor, said: “What I do now is give alms in my church. We have a special donation for the needy.

“Such as widows and those who are struggling to survive in this economy.

“I also support my family members who are also struggling.

“The way the economy is now, people hardly render help anymore.

“Even when you have the money, prefer to give it to immediate family members who are striving to survive.
“People don’t even have pity anymore.

“For instance, Look at those commercial bus drivers before they assist school children to the nearest bus stop of their school but now if a child doesn’t have a complete transport fare they either stay at the bus stop for long hours or trek half the journey.

“It is not as if these drivers are bad but it’s a condition the economy has placed in their lives so they have to kill pity.

“That is what has extended into our tradition of giving. The current economic situation has killed pity.”

Republican Donald Trump has ruled out running again in the United States’ 2028 presidential election if he loses in the upcoming November poll, according to an interview aired on Sunday.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, on Sunday condemned the outcome of the Edo State governorship election.

On Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21 governorship poll.

But in a statement, Fintiri said he wept for Nigeria’s democracy, describing the exercise as shameful.

“I weep for Nigeria’s democracy after witnessing the shameful Edo Gubernatorial poll. The APC’s desperate attempts to discredit me by falsely claiming I announced results won’t distract from the real issue. I merely shared results from INEC’s Irev portal, as collated by INEC from the various Local Government Areas,” Fintiri said.

“What’s truly shameful is APC’s national chairman flying into Edo with a private jet on election day, defying movement restrictions, while their Governors used armoured escorts to intimidate voters.

“This blatant disregard for democratic norms is the real brigandage. Nigerians are outraged, slamming INEC for compromising and favoring APC. The reported vote-buying, disruption of collation processes, and suspicious results with more votes than accredited voters undermine trust in our democracy. Democracy indeed is under attack.

“We must condemn this rape of democracy and demand accountability. The world is watching, and Nigeria deserves better.”

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, has emerged victorious in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

The off-cycle election had 17 candidates contest for the exalted seat at the Dennis Osadebay House in Benin City, Edo State.

The governorship election was held in 4,519 polling units across the 18 local government areas of Edo State.

Naija News understands that Okpebhole had the support of the former governor and lawmaker representing Edo North senatorial district, Adams Oshiomhole.

The electoral process was widely contested by Okpebhole, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

Okpebholo won in Esan West, Owan West, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Etsako West, Oredo Local Government Areas.

The APC candidate secured a total of 291,667 votes. His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,655 votes.

Olumide Akpata, representing the Labour Party (LP), finished third, receiving a total of 22,763 votes.

Meanwhile, the PDP in Edo has appealed to the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, to review the results collated for the governorship election before the final announcement of the winner of the election.

PDP Chairman in Edo, Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, told newsmen on Sunday in Benin that the entries the electoral officers made were totally different from the actual results uploaded on the INEC IREV at the polling units.

Aziegbemi noted that the results had allegedly been inflated in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) through deducted votes from the PDP.

The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has levelled serious allegations against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the conduct of the Edo governorship election.

Speaking at a press conference in Benin on Sunday, Fintiri, the chairman of the Edo PDP campaign council, claimed that agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were denied access to the INEC office before the collation process.

The governor further alleged that the collation of results was violently disrupted in several local government areas, raising alarms about the integrity of the election.

As the situation unfolds, the PDP is demanding accountability from INEC and urging for a transparent and fair collation of the election results, emphasizing the need for every vote to count in line with democratic principles.

According to him, “In Edo South, local government collation processes were stopped in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, and Egor and moved illegally to the State Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin on the instructions of an Assistant Inspector General (AIG), in complete breach of the statutory collation process.

“Affected party agents and representatives were then ordered to converge on the INEC State Headquarters in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area for the completion of the collation exercise.

“Upon arrival, agents of the PDP were not allowed into the INEC State Office for the exercise. On the other hand, agents of the APC were allowed unfettered access into the INEC premises to participate in the collation process. This was also in breach of the Electoral Act section on neutrality, as well as the rules and regulations published for these elections.”

The Adamawa governor added that at about 9 pm, “senior officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accompanied by the police, stormed the Etsako West LGA collation centre and began shooting indiscriminately.”

“As a result of the attack, the council vice chairman was left in a critical condition from a shooting injury. Because of this assault, the expected results from Wards 7 and 11 were not delivered.

“At the INEC state office, a 2km barricade was created by the police to cordon off access, thereby restricting movement in the area”, he said.

Fintiri reeled out some local government results, emphasizing that his announcement did not override the electoral umpire’s authority.

He added that the figures were those received from party agents.

“I did not announce results, I only informed the public of the exact figures from our collation agents that was ongoing before INEC disrupted the process… INEC should be accused of violating the Electoral Act, not me,” Fintiri said.

He said, “It took the protest of Governor Obaseki, who made an entry to the state INEC office and registered the displeasure of the PDP with the irregularities of the collation process, for things to move forward.

“We thereby demand a restoration of the collation process in accordance with the Electoral Act and the INEC rules and regulations for this election.

“Any other illegal and unlawful action going forward will be a violation of the will of the people and abuse of the Electoral Act.”

Patrick Doyle, the ace Nigerian actor, has criticised the phrase “I am chosen”, commonly chanted by members of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries.

In a recent Facebook post, Doyle described the phrase as “nonsensical” and argued it is not a Christian doctrine.

“The phrase ‘I am a chosen,’ as used by members of the religious sect called ‘Chosen,’ should never be connected to the Body of Christ,” he wrote.

“The members of this sect do not have Jesus in mind when they chant the phrase. Their adoration is unequivocally directed at a man, their GO, and the sect he founded. The phrase does not mention or even imply Jesus in any way.

“To infer that the nonsensical phrase is remotely connected to giving glory to the name or person of our Savior, Jesus Christ, is to make a mockery of our faith.

“Bloggers and content creators using the phrase are not mocking the Church of God but the sect in question and its founder.”

Doyle’s remark comes on the heels of skepticism surrounding testimonies from the church.

Last week, social media users shared old clips of congregants recounting their miraculous experiences.

In one video, an elderly woman claimed four armed robbers attacked her but miraculously gained control of their guns, leading to the arrest of three of the assailants.

Similarly, a man testified that he survived a kidnapping, machete assaults, and gunshots “without sustaining any injuries.”

Another man alleged that a lion rescued him from kidnappers by lifting him into the air and guiding him to safety.

Dee One, the comedian, earlier warned critics not to incur the wrath of Lazarus Muoka, the church’s general overseer.

However, IK Ogbonna, the actor, also called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to tackle the issue of “fake miracles” in churches.

CAN recently condemned a viral testimony of a congregant who claimed “an angel” provided answers to her during an examination.

If 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye, a 300-level philosophy student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, had known the far-reaching implications of killing a fellow human being, he would have opted to remain poor.

The lanky black complexioned young man who resides with his parents in Ikorodu in Lagos is now cooling his head inside the cell of Lagos state Police Command Tactical Unit, Ikeja.

He bemoaned the fate that befell him, lamenting that after his arrest, he tried to cut his fingers with any sharp object so that he would bleed to death but for the vigilant security agents that stopped him.

His story:

“I was born in Surulere Local Government area in June, 2001. My parents later relocated to Ikorodu where we have our own house. I have three siblings. One of them is late. I am the first son, and my father is a boat driver. Before I was born, he and my mum worked at Eko hotel. So, I think due to their marriage, one of them had to stop working. When he stopped, my mum was still there until 2011. I attend the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

How it happened

“I had not been at home for over six months. The victim, Christiana Idowu, 18, contacted me several times in school where I was studying Philosophy, in 300 level. She had been contacting me that she wanted to repair her phone because I had repaired it for her before.

How did you meet her?

“We were church members. I had known her for three years before the incident. She had been contacting me and I told her I would be at home at the end of the session. When I came back to Lagos, she called and I told her I was at home. She came to our house around 5pm on the day of the incident and asked me to repair her phone. She was an Industrial Training, IT, student in Yaba College of Technology. She came with a bike. She had her bag and other things she used in school. So, when she arrived, I collected the phone from her, looked at it, and I discovered that the phone only had battery problem and the screen was faulty. I just needed to put gum on the screen and change the battery. But she was not ready to change the battery, she just wanted to continue using the phone like that.

Why did you kill her?

“I killed her because I had financial problems. I thought of the problems and decided to strangle her while she was busy going through my phone. I then called her mother claiming that she was kidnapped and she should pay ransom. I didn’t really pounce on her. She was preoccupied with my own phone. Then, it was drizzling, and a little noisy, so, I just grabbed her, applied pressure. She started struggling. She didn’t really shout because I already suppressed her. I then squeezed her throat and she gave up. I placed her body on a seat and took her picture so that I could send it to her mother. I didn’t send it immediately, I just left her at the shop like that. That was around 5:30 pm on Monday night. I left her on the seat and went to plan how to dispose of the body. By 11 p.m. that same night, I started to dig her grave in a small farm behind our compound. Luckily, rain fell that day, so the ground was a little soft. I dug using shovel. I was not able to dig deep that night. So, I postponed the digging. The body was still in the shop. By 4 am the following day, I woke up, I continued digging. Honestly, I did not close my eyes till day break. I was just filled with thoughts about what I did. I then took the body to the shallow grave only to notice that it could not be covered well. I thought of what to do because I was really tired of digging. I had blisters on my hand and the shovel I used had already broken. So, I thought of chopping off her head to make it easy to bury but I did not have the courage to do that. I just had to continue digging even if the shovel broke, I continued to dig until the shallow grave could contain her. I then buried her, covered it with sand. Everything happened before 5 a.m. Then I left the scene to contact her mother and demanded ransom.”

How did you get the mother’s number?

“It was on the daughter’s phone. Luckily, she did not have PIN number or pass code. I recognized her mother’s face on her profile picture. I then called and the first thing I said to her was, “Hello, madam. we have your daughter.” The next thing she said was “who be this?.” Maybe she thought it wasn’t for real. Then I sent a text message telling her same thing. I sent it with the picture where she was sitting on a chair. She asked me, “What do you want?” I told her, “madam, how much do you have?” I spoke to her. I wrote everything in Pidgin. She said, “I don’t have any money. I am a single mother.”

I said, “Madam, just bring anything.” She said she didn’t have, I said; “bring three million to release your daughter.” I know for a fact that she didn’t have three million. Even if she did not have that amount, I was ready to collect any amount because I desperately needed money no matter the amount. After going back and forth with her, she said she was able to get N350, 000.00 and I gave her a sporty bet account to pay the money in order to avoid being traced. That was three days after I buried her daughter. She sent the money there, but, I was unable to withdraw at first because Sporty bet had this rule that once you deposit, you have to play at least a game before you can withdraw. I tried to withdraw but they locked the fund. Then, they asked me to present my NIN for verification. I sent it to them, and they released the money. They didn’t release it until three days later.

“ I then asked the mother again, “madam, how much can you pay again? She said the money in her account wasn’t up to N10, 000.00. I said, just hurry, hurry, put it together and send. “She sent it to her daughter’s account making the whole money N360, 000.00 paid as ransom. After that, I stopped all communication with the mother. But, before they sent the money, they were telling me that they wanted to actually see a video or voice confirmation of the girl but the girl was no more. It was only that picture I took that I was able to send. So, I just kept on pushing them. I used the money to take care of my personal and family financial problems.”

How did the police arrest you?

“It was not police, I was picked up by soldiers. They told me it was through my Sporty bet because I uploaded my NIN so it was traced. If I had not uploaded my NIN, it would just be an empty account. But the moment I uploaded my NIN, all my personal details, my location, my address, my name, everything, was already on the sporty bet. The girl’s phone was also with me, they could have traced the location of the phone, that was how they got my location.”

How do you feel now that you have taken somebody’s life over peanuts?

“Even before I was arrested, Christiana was somebody that I had known for over three years, and we were close friends. I regret that I killed her because my mum and her mum were friends.”

Have you ever had any mental issues that landed you in the hospital?

“I wouldn’t say that it landed me in the hospital, but I am always alone. I don’t like associating with anybody.”

What was the last word she said before you took her life?

“She was focusing on the TikTok video. She did not say anything. In fact, when that incident happened, my cell phone dropped from her hand.”

Now, what do you want to be done to you?

“I don’t deserve any mercy for what I have done. At the same time, I ask God to forgive me. What I did was totally wrong and I regret it. I feel remorseful for what I have done. If there’s any way I could be given a second chance, I want to be given one but I deserve death, honestly. I have been planning to kill myself. While I was in the guard room, I tried to look for any sharp object to cut myself so that I would bleed to death.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is currently leading in the Edo State governorship election race.

Naija News recalls that the Edo State gubernatorial election was held across the South-south State on Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday announced the results from 16 LGAs.

According to the results announced so far, Okpebholo secured 244,549 votes, while Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, garnered 195,954 votes.

Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, LP, got a total of 13,348 votes.

Meanwhile, the electoral umpire has announced a 3-hour br to await results from the final two local governments.

Collation is set to resume at 5 p.m.

A viral video circulating on Sunday captured a moment of unity and prayer among several All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at the situation room in Benin, Edo State

This is as they await the announcement of the ongoing Edo State governorship election results.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, led the prayer session, with Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other notable APC members in attendance. The group took a moment to worship as results continued to trickle in.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began releasing the official results of the 2024 Edo governorship election on Sunday.

Among the main contenders were Monday Okpebholo of the APC, Asue Ighodalo representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

As of the time of filling this report, Naija News observed that the APC’s candidate, Monday Okpebholo, was leading the race with 244,549 votes from 16 local government areas, according to INEC’s tally.

His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, secured 195,954 votes, while the Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata garnered 13,348 votes.

While the results from the 16 local government areas have been announced, INEC called for a three-hour break to await the final results from two remaining local governments.

Collation is expected to resume at 5 p.m. at INEC’s headquarters in Benin City.

The atmosphere in the APC’s situation room remained hopeful, with governors and party members united in both prayer and anticipation as they awaited the final outcome of the closely contested election.

I am a retired officer of the law. I retired as a Sergeant after 35 years! When I was on the job, I provided for my family the best way I could. We lived in the barracks until I had to retire. I had to give up the flat I was given. That’s what happens when you retire. I retired due to an injury I suffered while off duty.

I agree that I had too many children, I had 8 children with my wife. You know, I also lived rough. I drink a lot because…life is harsh!

I had just one wife, Obiageli. She was Georgina’s mother. My wife died in the accident I told you I got injured from. Anyway, I couldn’t function properly as an officer even though my commanding officer really tried for me. I was still on the job for 7 more years before I had to go into early retirement. My gratuity was paid 4 and a half years after I retired.

When we first moved out of the barracks, we came straight here, Ajegunle. The cost of getting a house wasn’t much then. Then when I got my gratuity, I bought an Okada to use to make more money to feed my children.

Georgina has always been wayward

Not all my children live with me; the three older boys have left home; two are mechanics and one is in Abuja working in a supermarket. The fourth child, a girl, Justina, is working for one madam. She doesn’t live with me, she lives with the madam. Georgina is next, the third to the last. From the very beginning, she had been a wild child!

When we were still at the barracks, my wife was always quarreling with Georgina because we often heard stories that she was sleeping around!

We heard that she had slept with all the boys in the barracks! My own child! She wasn’t even doing it for money!

Look, no parent wants that but Georgina is wild!

We tried to discipline her but she was just too wild. She would run away from the house for days. I agree the conditions at home weren’t great, but I did my best. I was given a two-room flat. My wife and two of our youngest children slept in one room. The others shared the other room. The house was choked.

The conditions were horrible; you know police barracks, now. But that was all I could provide for them. After all, there were other officers too, like me, with many children, in the same conditions and their children were not wayward like Georgina. So I can’t blame the environment.

Georgina was 15 years old when all this nonsense began. Even though I knew some of the officers and boys she was said to be sleeping with, I couldn’t confront them, I faced my own child and disciplined her!

Then after we had to leave the barracks, after my wife had died…you know, I couldn’t even afford to rent a room. I still had five of my children living with me. Maybe, say four because Georgina was never fully living with us. Justina, the one senior to Georgina, hadn’t got a job with the madam at that time.
We moved to Ajegunle

I moved to Ajegunle. It was cheaper and we rented this place. It’s on top of a dump, but this is where we call home. This is what I could afford. I couldn’t do any other job. Even as a security guard, nobody wanted a security guard with a bad leg.

When I got my gratuity, I bought Okada to use for business and feed my children. The remaining three boys were in school, Jakande Secondary School.

As for Georgina, I only saw her a few times, her involvement in prostitution will not let us see her regularly.

As you know, Okada business isn’t lucrative anymore. When government banned Okada in many places, many of the riders came to our area to do business. So, there are too many of us here. And look at me, I am an old man, how many rides would I make to earn even N3, 000 per day?

I used to make up to N5, 000 sometimes, N6, 000 per day but since everywhere here is Okada, Okada… business is bad now!

Ok, so feeding the children, and even buying school shoes and clothes was a problem for me. That’s when I told Georgina to be “useful”, I told her, if she is fully into prostitution, she should at least use it to bring food home to us.

The other day, the landlord increased our rent; yes, this zinc house has a landlord. The man increased the rent. I couldn’t afford the increase on top of feeding three children. I also knew the man had been eyeing Georgina on the days he comes here and sees her. So, I told her to go and meet the landlord and “settle” with him so that he won’t increase our rent.

She refused to help with proceeds from her prostitution!
She said, “no!”

I got angry. She began to abuse me openly and called me all sorts of names, saying I was asking her to engage in prostitution!

That’s when I said, “If you are using your toto for fun, at least, use it to help your family. I hear you sleep with everything that had something between their legs, your business no dey hep your family?”
Well, she went, she went to do what she knows how to do and the landlord has changed his tone, we are no longer owing rent…for now.

Maybe that’s what the neighbours heard and are saying I am forcing her into prostitution. Is it the prostitution she isn’t already in?

Is it today she has been sleeping around?

The girl is very stupid, other girls around here are doing it and building houses for their parents, she is just giving out her own for free!

That’s all I am saying, “If you will sleep around, use it to help us!”
